Over $3 billion set aside to support rice farmers – President announces
The Irfaan Ali-led administration has set aside more than $3 billion to support rice farmers, a move that joins other efforts to support various sections of the population.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali consulted with farmers on Thursday at the Arthur Ching Conference Centre at Liliendaal, Georgetown. After the engagement, the President said cash support would be given to the farmers.
Rice farmers cultivating less than 50 acres of rice will receive $15,000 per acre, while those cultivating more than 50 acres will receive $10,000 per acre.
Registration and verification exercises will begin soon, Dr. Ali further noted.
This decision was made in light of the global conflict, including the war in Iran, that has driven up prices of goods, including fertilisers, transport, and fuel.
Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, who joined President Ali at the consultation, said the spike in costs can’t be controlled. However, he affirmed that the government is responding so that various groups can be better supported.
“We are aware that on top of a low price for rice, you’re now going to be faced with an additional cost,” Jagdeo said.
