Two years jail for man, 67, involved in Bartica fatal accident

Byron Pearson, a 67-year-old resident of Mongrippa Hill, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni), will spend two years in jail after he was found guilty of causing deaths by dangerous driving.

Pearson was involved in the 2023 Bartica accident that resulted in the deaths of David Huggins and Felicia Lewis.

The elderly man appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, before Magistrate Crystal Lambert, on Friday and was found guilty of two counts of ‘Causing Death by Dangerous Driving’.

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment for each charge, which will run concurrently.

The man first appeared before Magistrate Lambert last year, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded not guilty then and was placed on $600,000 bail.

Huggins and Lewis died in the accident which occurred at Fourth Avenue and Fifth Street, Bartica.

At the time, they were on a motorcycle when they collided with a car- PRR 5669- driven by Pearson. According to the Police, Pearson was proceeding South along the road and failed to stop at the ‘stop sign’ on Fifth Street, Bartica. It is alleged that Huggins was speeding and collided with the right-side front portion of the car.
