Pedestrian, 20, dies after run over by car; driver flees scene
A 20-year-old man died on Saturday morning, hours after he was run over by a car while lying on the Zeeburg Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
Dead is Warren Junior Thomas, a resident of Area ‘G’ De Willem Public road, WCD.
The incident occurred around 22:10hrs.
Police Headquarters reported that the car, PZZ 4005 is owned by Sheriff Security Services. At the time, it was driven by 29-year-old Okassie Rodwel Stewart.
According to a police report, Thomas was lying on the southern parapet of the public road, when the driver drove over Thomas.
Police said the driver fled the scene of the incident.
“The driver stopped, exited the vehicle and spoke to another driver whose vehicle was stationary in front of the supermarket. The driver then went back into his motorcar and drove off in an eastern direction,” Police said.
Thomas was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to Leonora Cottage Hospital.
He succumbed around 02:10hrs Saturday while receiving medical attention.
Police said CCTV footage was reviewed and the driver was arrested after he returned to the scene on Saturday morning.
He is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.
