Leonora captain charged after gun, ammo found on boat

Jermaine Williams, 31, a boat captain of Leonora Village, West Coast Demerara was Tuesday charged for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition without a license.
Williams appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Tariq Mohamed who read the charge to him.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges and was granted bail in the amounts of $200,000 and $100,000, respectively.
The case was adjourned to June 3, 2024.
On May 05, 2024, at about 17:00 hrs, ranks in Police Regional Division #7 conducted an operation at Quartzstone Landing, Cuyuni River.
During this operation, they observed a metal boat tied to a tree beside the river bank.
The ranks then conducted a search of the boat in Williams’ presence. During the search, a red bucket was found beneath the boat’s bow. Inside the bucket, the ranks found one silver and black Tanfoglio 9mm Pistol without serial number and a magazine containing 11 live rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The boat Captain was asked if he was the holder of a valid firearm license, and he responded, no.
He was then told of the offenses committed, cautioned, arrested, and escorted to the Bartica Police Station.
