Contractor shoots motorcycle bandit

A 32-year-old contractor, armed with a Glock 19 pistol, thwarted a robbery attempt in Georgetown Sunday night. Police Headquarters reported that two suspects on a motorcycle (CM 1812) approached the contractor and demanded his phone while he was on Irving and Forshaw Streets in Queenstown, Georgetown.

One of the suspects, Chris Benn, 29, of South Ruimveldt Garden was shot while attempting to escape. Police said Benn was armed with a knife.

Police said the contractor who is a licensed firearm holder was standing next to his vehicle, watching some workers fix a gate in front of a property he owns.

At about 19:45 hrs, the two suspects rode up to the contractor and Benn, who was the pillion rider, approached the victim while demanding that he hand over his cell phone.

“The victim, who at the time had his cell phone in his right hand, managed to avoid getting stabbed by the attacker. The suspect snatched the victim’s cell phone and turned to go back to the motorcycle,” the police reported.

The contractor also claimed that he became fearful for his life when he saw the accomplice “going to his right side waist, which was bulky” and he [contractor] drew his firearm and discharged three rounds towards the suspects.

The accomplice dropped the motorcycle and fled the scene. Police said Benn also attempted to escape but he fell to the ground.

The contractor and his workers then held onto Benn and the phone was recovered.

Benn is currently receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital for a gunshot wound he sustained to the middle of his back. The bullet exited the right side of his abdomen.
