CARIFTA GAMES 2025: Springer delivers gold again as Guyana cops three medals on day one
Guyana’s Tianna Springer once again demonstrated her prowess on the regional junior stage, securing a brilliant gold medal in the Girls’ Under-20 400m final at the CARIFTA Games in Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday.
Springer clocked an impressive 53.07 seconds to retain her title, remarkably her third consecutive individual gold at the Games.
Barbados’ Kadia Rock (53.52s) took the silver medal, while Jamaica’s Abrina Wright (53.78s) claimed the bronze.
There was further success for Guyana in the Boys’ Under-20 400m final, where defending champion Malachi Austin narrowly missed out on retaining his title.
Austin ran a strong race to finish second in 46.54 seconds, just three-hundredths of a second behind Zion Miller of The Bahamas (46.51s).
Trinidad and Tobago’s DA Shaun Lezama finished third (47.43s). Fellow Guyanese Kaidon Persaud finished fifth in the same race (48.26s).

<p>Attoya Harvey also contributed to Guyana’s medal tally, claiming bronze in the Girls’ Under-20 1500m. Harvey finished in 4:41.61s, behind the dominant Jamaican pair of Cindy Rose (gold, 4:37.95s) and Sushana Johnson (silver, 4:40.83s).</p>
<p>However, it wasn’t all medals for Guyana on the opening day. Athaleyha Hinckson, last year’s Under-17 100m gold medallist, finished just outside the medals in fourth place in her Under-20 100m debut (11.54 seconds).</p>
<p>The race was won by Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas (11.45s).</p>
<p>In the Boys’ Under-17 100m final, Ezekiel Millington finished fifth (10.76s), with Jamaica’s Michael Graham taking gold (10.53s).</p>

Several other Guyanese athletes put in noteworthy performances in the distance events, even if they didn’t reach the podium.
In the Boys’ Under-17 1500m final, Ebo McNeil ran a commendable race, finishing fifth in 4:18.49.
While he was five seconds shy of a medal, his performance against a strong field, which saw Trinidad and Tobago’s Christopher Sammy take gold in a home crowd-pleasing 4:09.65, followed by Bermuda’s Cameron Adkins (4:12.80) and Jamaica’s Luke Plummer (4:13.54), suggests a promising future for the young athlete.
Esther McKinnon competed in the Girls’ Under-17 1500m final, finishing eighth.
The race was won by Trinidad and Tobago’s Oshea Cummings (4:44.62), with Haiti’s Aisha Wajid (4:45.20) and Jamaica’s Denique Palmer (4:47.50) completing the top three.
The Boys’ Under-20 1500m final featured two Guyanese athletes – Timothy Smith finished in 10th place with a time of 4:17.11, while Cort Anthony followed closely behind in 11th, clocking 4:17.87.
Grenada’s D’Angelo Brown won the race in an impressive 3:58.96s.
Earlier in the day, Guyana’s first-ever decathlete at the CARIFTA Games, Gabriel Ethan Cort, made a positive start, clocking 11.40s in the 100m component of the event.
After the first three events of the demanding ten-discipline competition, Cort finds himself in eighth position.
