Permaul elevates to Level IV coach; aims to develop next generation of spinners
Veerasammy Permaul, the unassuming left-arm spinner and First-Class behemoth, has officially completed his Level IV coaching certification, setting the stage for a new phase in his decorated career even as he continues to spin webs for the Guyana Harpy Eagles.
The 36-year-old, who finished as Guyana’s leading wicket-taker -32 wickets – in the 2025 West Indies Four-Day Championship earlier this year, recently received the certificate from CoachEd—the platform directed by World Cup-winning South African coach Gary Kirsten.
Permaul, who already boasts a colossal 668 wickets from 151 first-class matches, remains focused on reaching the 700-wicket mark. However, his maiden Level IV badge signifies an immediate pivot toward mentoring.
Speaking to News Room Sport, Permaul explained that the advanced qualification—following his Level III completion in September 2025—fundamentally altered his view of player development.
He is now focused on harnessing this knowledge to benefit young Caribbean talent.
“Achieving my Level 4 coaching certificate is an incredible milestone,” Permaul stated.

“This process has expanded my knowledge and taught me to look at the game in greater depth. I’ve learned to analyse not just the technical side but also how players think, feel, and what they need in order to grow.”
Permaul is determined to use this expanded psychological and analytical toolkit to cultivate resilient cricketers.
“What I look forward to the most is the opportunity to pass this knowledge on to the next generation,” he added. “My goal is to use what I’ve learned throughout the years to help develop future cricketers who are passionate about the game.
I want to play a part in shaping players who not only succeed on the field but also grow as confident, resilient individuals off the field and also create a learning environment where young players feel supported, inspired, and empowered to push their boundaries.”
Permaul’s transition comes as he remains the most prolific spinner in regional history. Of his 668 first-class wickets, 587 were taken regionally—the highest tally for any spinner in the Caribbean.
Furthermore, of his 156 List A wickets, 126 were claimed for Guyana, another undisputed record in the region.
