Two in custody after Police seize firearms in West Ruimveldt, Corriverton operations
Police are investigating two separate incidents in which firearms were found during operations in Georgetown and Berbice.
In the first incident, police in Regional Division 4 ‘A’ found a firearm during an operation at Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, between 01:15 hrs and 02:00 hrs on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
Police said ranks acting on information received went to the area, where they saw a small crowd gathered on the southern side of the roadway. During the exercise, one man in the crowd was seen acting suspiciously.
Ranks approached the man, who allegedly walked to the northern side of the road and threw a handgun to the ground. The weapon was retrieved and identified as a Glock 19 9mm pistol with a magazine but no ammunition.
The suspect, a 30-year-old businessman of Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, was arrested and taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station along with the suspected firearm, which was lodged pending examination.
In the second incident, police in Regional Division 6 found a firearm and ammunition during an operation at No. 78 Village, Corriverton, Berbice, at about 08:30 hrs on Friday, March 6, 2026.
During the operation, a CANU intelligence officer searched a male passenger and his luggage after his arrival in Guyana from Suriname using the backtrack service.
Police said a cream-coloured side bag was opened, and a 9mm pistol was found along with two magazines and twenty-nine rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The suspect, a 25-year-old fisherman of Logwood, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was arrested and taken to the Springlands Police Station. The firearm and ammunition were processed and lodged as investigations continue.
Both suspects remain in police custody while investigations are ongoing.
