FOUR-DAY: Harpy Eagles fight back after Hurricanes secure first-innings lead
Guyana Harpy Eagles have dramatically clawed their way back into contention against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, showcasing resilience and determination on day two of their sixth-round clash in the 2025 West Indies Four-Day Championship at Warner Park.
At stumps on day two, the Harpy Eagles are just five runs away from erasing the Hurricanes’ first-innings advantage, with nine wickets still in hand.
Facing a daunting 142-run deficit, openers Matthew Nandu (53*) and Raymond Perez (49) laid a solid foundation with a 78-run partnership.
On the verge of his first half-century of the season, Perez fell attempting a second consecutive six off Rahkeem Cornwall, a dismissal that belied his otherwise positive approach.
The in-form Kevlon Anderson, who remained unbeaten on 77 in the first innings, continued his impressive form, compiling a compact 31 (4x4s) from 51 balls.
Demonstrating patience and resilience, Nandu faced 127 balls for his 53, striking four boundaries.
Earlier in the day, the Hurricanes resumed their innings on 143-4, and Test batsman Keacy Carty (92) and Jahmar Hamilton (80) looked set to bat the Eagles out of the contest, building a substantial lead.
However, the Eagles’ pace attack, which has been a key weapon throughout the season, delivered crucial breakthroughs.
Ronaldo Alimohamed’s impressive form continued, as he bagged 5-91 from 19.3 overs. Nial Smith (3-62) and Keemo Paul (2-61) provided valuable support.
A victory in this match is crucial for the Harpy Eagles to maintain their position at the top of the standings, as the race for the championship is set to go down to the wire in the final round.
