Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony on Tuesday revealed that two persons died in Guyana this year after they were infected with dengue.
And in an update shared with the local press corps, the Health Minister also said 2,852 persons were infected with the disease for the year so far. Of that number, 265 persons needed hospitalisation.
Dr. Anthony’s update came as questions were raised about dengue in Guyana. Last week, he said preliminary findings suggest that Berbice siblings Vishnu Mohabeer and Arianna Mohabeer, succumbed to complications related to dengue fever.
According to him, the Health Ministry has noted a surge in dengue cases and has taken key actions to help mitigate the situation. Increased fogging is among the actions taken.
Based on the more than 11,200 tests done, a majority of the cases are concentrated in Regions One, Two, Four, Six, Nine and 10. Dr. Anthony did not say what regions the persons who died hailed from.
“There has been a decline in cases this week,” the Health Minister said however.
Last year, Guyana also experienced a surge in dengue cases. In August, the News Room reported that there were 11 dengue-related deaths for the year up to that point. Of that 11, there were at least six children who died.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease and its symptoms include high fevers, head and body aches and nausea.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has said these increased infections are, in part, linked to global warming. Increased temperatures are said to be conducive for the breeding of the Aedes aegypti mosquito which spreads the disease and thrives in stagnant water.
Hayley Matthews smacked 141 to follow up her unbeaten 140 in the series opener to take an inspired West Indies to a crushing win in the third ODI. The victory sealed a clean sweep over Pakistan.
She powered West Indies to 278 as Pakistan’s bowlers struggled for wickets on a somewhat turgid track in Karachi. Pakistan managed little more than a feeble response, with Muneeba Ali’s 38 the highest score as they were skittled out for a limp 190. Matthews ensured her contribution was all round with figures of 2-26 in eight overs as an 88-run win was secured.
This was a dead rubber anyway, but there was little jeopardy in the game from the moment Matthews won the toss and elected to set a target. The captain led from the front as she put the pressure on Pakistan’s bowlers, with the opening attack of Fatima Sana and Nida Dar placed under immediate pressure.
First-change spinner Nashra Sandhu, the pick of the attack with 3-54, provided an early breakthrough, but it was little more than a speedbump for an unstoppable West Indies side.
Matthews and former West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor combined for a 101-run stand for the third wicket, by which time Matthews brought up her fifth ODI hundred and second this series. As Taylor rotated the strike, Matthews pressed home the visitors’ advantage by hitting 19 fours herself.
In contrast, Pakistan managed 21 in their entire innings. Sandhu’s twin strikes in the 46th over to remove Taylor and Chinelle Henry came much too late, with an unbeaten 12-ball 20 from Aaliyah Alleyne helping their side march to 278.
Pakistan’s response saw a bunch of double figures but very little substance. Openers Sadaf Shamas and Sidra Ameen had their stumps knocked back by Shamilia Conell and Henry, and while Muneeba and Bismah Maroof added 45 for the third wicket, the run-scoring was simply too leisurely to trouble the visitors.
It took 69 balls for those 45 to be scored before Karishma Ramharack prised Maroof out. Matthews’ twin strikes to get rid of captain Nida Dar and topscorer Muneeba Ali killed the game off for good.
Aalia Riaz and Fatima Sana put on another partnership, but the game was going through the motions by now. West Indies struck at regular intervals, and it all wrapped up in the 48th over when a double strike from Alleyne finished Pakistan off. The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has certified two new local manufacturers under its Made in Guyana Certification Programmes during April 2024.
Under the Permit to use the Made in Guyana Certification Mark programme which aims to promote quality in the local manufacturing market, Marcia’s Products of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara was on Tuesday, April 02, 2024 certified to use the Made in Guyana Standards Mark on its locally manufactured products. The newly certified products which were approved to carry the mark are Marcia’s Products cassava bread and cassava cassareep.
The certificate was handed over to Marcia’s Products’ Chief Operating Officer and Manager, Ms. Marcia Gonsalves-Kwang by GNBS Executive Director (Ag.) Mr. Al Fraser, who extended congratulations to the manufacturer and highlighted the importance of maintaining the requirements of the certification programme. Mr. Fraser encouraged the company to continue to pursue continuous improvement. In response, Ms. Gonsalves-Kwang noted “I am extremely grateful and proud to be part of this programme. My team and I have worked tirelessly with the support of the GNBS Team to get here today; this moment is truly rewarding.”
Meanwhile, on Monday, April 22 a second local manufacturer was given the green light to use the Made in Guyana Certification Mark on its locally manufactured products. Maliyah’s Kitchen of Pike Street, Georgetown joined the Made in Guyana list of enterprises that are benefitting from market recognition and elevation of the quality of their local products.
Maliyah’s Kitchen was granted the esteemed privilege to display the Mark on their locally manufactured Mithai, Milk Powder Fudge and Sal Sev.
During the brief hand-over ceremony, the Made in Guyana Certificate was presented to Maliyah’s Kitchen’s Proprietress, Ms. Alyssa Singh by GNBS Head of Certification Services, Mr. Keon Rankin.
Ms. Singh, with a proud smile relayed, “This is a great achievement for us at Maliyah’s Kitchen. We are so grateful to the GNBS Team for its support and for being so easy to work with. With this certification, we urge other local manufacturers to get Made in Guyana Certified to get into local and regional markets.”
These two companies now join thirty-eight (38) other companies that are a part of the GNBS Made in Guyana Certification Programme. The Made in Guyana Standards Mark is a registered mark that aims to provide recognition to locally manufactured products on the local and international markets and is a signature of quality for authentic Guyanese Products.
Consumers are encouraged to make products branded “Made in Guyana – GNBS Approved” their products of choice when shopping.

A grand total of $110.8 million was raised locally to support humanitarian support efforts in Palestine.
These funds were raised through donations at an event held at the Ramadan Village earlier this month and through subsequent donations from persons. The cheque was handed over to President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Tuesday at the Office of the President in Georgetown.
Director of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG), Sheikh Moen ul-Hack, who handed over the cheque to the President, highlighted that the funds were garnered from persons of all walks of life, not just muslims.
The “overwhelming support” from people necessitated an extension of the donation period, he added.
President Ali, like many others at the simple event, spoke out against the situation in Gaza. Though humanitarian support is welcomed, he said the people of Palestine deserve support.
“What they deserve is to live in peace, sovereignty, territorial integrity and they deserve to live in a land in which women and children are not killed and bombed on a daily basis,” President Ali said.
He also condemned Israel’s actions.
Altogether, Guyana hopes to contribute to efforts at getting humanitarian aid into Gaza. For six months now, Gaza has been battling an Israeli siege.
Israel launched its brutal military offensive on October 7 following a deadly attack by Hamas fighters. Some 1,139 people were killed and about 240 people were taken captive by the Palestinian fighters. Nearly 85 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have been displaced and more than 14,000 children have been killed in the offensive which critics have dubbed a war of vengeance.
