The Guyana Athletes Commission on Saturday hosted its first-ever Social Media Management Workshop targeting local athletes.
The session was held at the Guyana Olympic Association’s headquarters at Liliendaal and conducted by social media expert, Javon Wilson. Over 50 persons (athletes and officials) from 15 disciplines attended the event.
Also present were President of the Guyana Olympic Association Godfrey Munroe and Vice-president Cristy Campbell.

The aim was to equip athletes with essential knowledge on presenting themselves professionally across various social media platforms, thereby fostering opportunities for their personal and athletic growth.

Among those present was standout athlete Tianna SpringerChair of the Commission Chelsea Edghill, OLY, said: “There is a growing interest in athletes’ lives- how they prepare, how they train- and it also bodes well for them when it comes to the NIL (Name, Image and Likeness rights) deals and these big companies wanting to sponsor athletes.”

The workshop is the first of several initiatives planned by the Athletes Commission this year, in alignment with its mission to represent and support athletes within the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA).
Edghill added: “Athletes play a pivotal role in society in terms of inspiring other people and being a positive influence on society, and having this workshop bodes well for all athletes. For us, we need to be seen as more than just people who hit a ball or swim- we have a part to play and our voices should be heard.”
According to Edghill, other workshops are in the pipelines with specific focus on Mental Health and Nutrition.
About the Guyana Athletes Commission
Established in 2022, the Guyana Athletes Commission serves as the primary advocate for athletes within the GOA.
The Commission is committed to championing the rights and welfare of Guyanese athletes while fostering their holistic development on and off the field.
A 28-year-old man who is accused of convincing two children, under the age of 14, to send him photographs of themselves, which he later uploaded online, is expected to face a series of cybercrime charges in the new week.
The suspect has been identified as Joshua Rambarran.
Police Headquarters in a statement said following reports of child luring and child pornography, an investigation was launched into the incidents which occurred on March 27, 2024 and April 6, 2024.
“Investigators found that two children under 14 years old were groomed and convinced to send explicit pictures and videos to a Snapchat account, and the said pictures and videos were then posted to a telegram group,” the Police report said.
As a result, the suspect was arrested and questioned.
A file was then prepared and dispatched to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Chambers for legal advice.
Police headquarters said that the file returned with recommendation that Rambarran be charged with several offences.
They are:
*Five counts of distributing child pornography through a computer cystem in contravention of Section 14(1)(b) contrary to Section 14 (4) (a) of the Cybercrime Act No. 16 of 2018.
*Publishing electronic data that is obscene with intent to humiliate another person in contravention of Section 19(2)(a) contrary to Section 19 (5)(a) of the Cybercrime Act No. 16 of 2018.
*Child luring, in contravention of Section 15(1)(a) of the Cybercrime Act 2018, contrary to section 15(4)(a) of the Cybercrime Act 2018, and
*Using a computer system to coerce, harass, intimidate, and humiliate a person, in contravention of section 19(1)(a) of the Cybercrime Act 2018, contrary to Section 19(5)(a) of the Cybercrime Act 2018.
Rambarran is scheduled to appear in court in the new week.
Berbice woman who was brutally raped and killed, died from asphyxiation, a wound to her neck, and a fracture to her cervical spine.
Police headquarters reported the findings of the autopsy, which was conducted on Saturday.
Nandlall’s body has since been handed over to her relatives for burial.
The incident occurred sometime between 12:30hrs on April 11 and 07:40hrs on April 12 at No. 0 (54) Village backdam, Corentyne, Berbice.
News Room reported that the woman left home around noon on Thursday in search of mangoes to make achar to sell.
She, however, was never seen again, and her son, along with other relatives formed a search party to look for her. Her naked body with injuries to her face and neck were discovered in the backdam where she would normally go to get the mangoes.
Two suspects, an 18-year-old and a 25-year-old were arrested in relation to the murder.
The News Room was informed that they have since confessed to raping and murdering the woman.
The suspects told Police that they would normally venture to the backlands area where they would set traps to catch wild animals and also engage in (smoking) marijuana.
There, they met the woman who had also gone to the location in search of mangoes to make achar to resell.
The suspects said they talked with the woman and during the conversation asked her to engage in sexual intercourse. After she refused, they forced themselves unto her and committed the act of rape. She threatened to inform the Police and that’s when they decided to kill her out of fear that they would be identified and arrested.
One of the men used a knife to commit the act.
Gunraj Veersammy, 27, a relative who was a part of the search team who found the body, said that they were searching with her son for hours. He said when they found her naked body, her clothes were nearby, leading them to believe that she was raped before she was killed.
