Slingerz Football Club has announced Jamaican Alex Thomas as the club’s new head coach ahead of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League.

Thomas, 41, steps in for Charles ‘Lilly’ Pollard, who resigned as head coach of the Vergenoegen-based club.

Thomas brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as head coach for Jamaica Premier League teams Arnett Gardens FC and Molynes United.

In his playing days, Thomas captained Jamaica’s Under-17 team during the 1999 World Cup in New Zealand and was a part of Jamaica’s Under-20 squad that competed in the 2001 U20 Youth World Cup held in Argentina.

He also earned one cap for Jamaica’s senior team under Serbian Coach Bora Milutinovic during the Lunar Cup in China.

Slingerz FC expressed enthusiasm about Thomas’ appointment, citing alignment with the club’s vision. They are confident in his ability to lead them to their second Elite League title.

Thomas will make his debut as head coach on Sunday in the league’s opening match against Monedderlust.

the murder of taxi driver Eon Holder who was shot and killed on Saturday morning in vicinity of the Bourda Market.

Police Headquarters in a statement said one of the suspects, who was armed with a handgun discharged the fatal bullet.

Both suspects fled the scene following the shooting which occurred at around 05:30 hrs.

At the time, Holder, a 43-year-old resident of Lot 2498 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown was plying his trade in his car, PRR 271.

Holder is attached to a taxi service.

According to the Police report, Holder was hired by a 50-year-old businessman of Queenstown, Georgetown to go to Bourda market to purchase vegetables.

“On arrival at Alexander Street, the businessman exited the car and was walking towards Bourda market, leaving the victim (Holder) looking for a parking space,” Police said.

A few minutes later, the businessman heard a loud explosion and upon checking, he noticed Holder lying some 15 feet away from his car.

The suspects were seen fleeing the scene on foot.

According to the Police, Holder and the suspect were involved in an argument after he parked his car in the middle of the road, blocking other vehicles from passing.

This caused one of the suspects to shoot him in the face.

Holder was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

His body is at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

ferry service among Guyana, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) was greenlighted and the vessel should make its inaugural journey in the next three months.

This was announced by President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Saturday as he addressed the opening ceremony of the XII Annual Consultation with Caribbean Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The consultation is being hosted in Guyana this year and the opening ceremony was held at the Marriott Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown.

Dr. Ali said the ferry should be in operation in “another two/ three months.” though he hopes it will be operational much sooner.

This ferry service, the President explained, is indicative of regional leaders’ new efforts to collaborate among themselves even if the entire Caribbean Community (CARICOM) bloc is not ready to move ahead on particular ventures.

He described this collaboration model as a “coalition of the willing.”

“We’re not waiting for everyone.

“Those who are willing to start an innovative project, we will go ahead and the others will join when they are ready,” Dr. Ali said.

A delegation from Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados last week met to discuss the progress on getting each country prepared to operationalise the planned ferry service.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Public Works, during the meeting held in Trinidad on February 15, country representatives noted that several systems need to be in place and they agreed that within two months’ time these systems should be in place.

Outside of the ferry service, President spoke at length about Guyana’s macro development plans, including the focus on infrastructure works and sustained, environmental development. And the Head of State emphasised that Guyana’s prosperity now will benefit the entire region.

President Ali is currently the Chairman of CARICOM. Starting Sunday, Guyana will host the 46th Regular Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government. It is expected that more discussions on regional development will take centrestage.
