Parika woman was beaten to death with piece of wood – Police
Amanda Persaud, the Parika, East Bank Essequibo woman killed by her ex-lover, was beaten with a piece of wood he picked up from the road.
A recording of the incident was shared with Police, revealing the horrific details.
Police headquarters said that Guradean Lallaram, a 39-year-old mason of Parika Façade, was on an electric scooter when he approached Persaud, 25, on Sunday morning.
The two got into a heated argument and the man came off of the scooter, picked up a piece of wood from the roadside and dealt the victim one lash to her head, causing her to fall to the ground.
He then allegedly stood over her and dealt her several lashes to her face with the wood, causing her to bleed profusely.
The entire ordeal was recorded by a resident in the area. The suspect dropped the wood and made good his escape on the scooter, but he stopped a short distance away and hid in a clump of bushes.
The Police were immediately summoned by residents in the area. The man’s hideout was made known and he was arrested and taken to the Parika Police Station. The piece of wood was also collected by Police.
Devi Persaud, the victim’s sister told the News Room that the pair were in a relationship and that they recently broke up after Amanda decided to leave the abusive situation.
The woman said Lallaram made countless threats and beat her sister several times. The couple lived with Amanda’s family and the family witnessed these events and advised her to break off the relationship and get a restraining order against him.
She eventually heeded their advice but did not get the restraining order because his family assured her that they would speak with him, Devi said. But on Sunday the man waited outside their home for her to leave and go to the market to approach her.

Guyana Football Federation (GFF) President Wayne Forde has extended his thanks to the players, officials and fans for their cooperation and understanding during the past few weeks as the federation worked diligently to reschedule the GFF-KFC Elite League Cup final.
The highly anticipated final between Western Tigers and the Guyana Defence Force football clubs is set to take place on January 1, 2024, at the Eve Leary Sports Ground in Kingston, Georgetown.
“Thank you to the sponsors, players, coaches and fans for their cooperation and understanding following the December postponement prompted by the tragic crash involving members of the finalist Guyana Defence Force,” President Forde shared.
The December 8 match was postponed due to the nation mourning the loss of five members of the Guyana Defence Force, who tragically died in a plane crash on December 7.
“We are looking forward to a memorable conclusion to this exhilarating tournament which has showcased some of the finest talents in Guyana,” the GFF top official added.
Western Tigers and Guyana Defence Force are contending for the top prize of G$1.5 million and the runner-up reward of G$1 million. In the opening match-up, Guyana Police Force and Buxton United will vie for the third-place prize of G$500,000 and the fourth-place reward of G$250,000.
GFF Competitions Director Troy Peters confirmed the completion of all arrangements for the final and third-place matches.
“Every necessary arrangement has been finalised for the upcoming final matches. Both teams and officials are ready and the fans are buzzing with anticipation to witness the crowning of the cup winner. We anticipate an outstanding conclusion to a tournament that has produced thrilling matches and incredible football.”
The journey to the finals has been remarkable for the Guyana Defence Force, securing an undefeated streak with five wins, accumulating a total of 15 points in Group A.
Meanwhile, Western Tigers claimed the Group B pinnacle, amassing 12 points through four victories and a single loss.
Other teams in Group A were Santos, Fruta Conquerors and Milerock, while Group B also featured Den Amstel, Victoria Kings and Ann’s Grove.
The kick-off for the third-place match is scheduled for 18:00h, followed by the highly-anticipated final showdown from 20:00h. (GFF)

The Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL) expresses profound concern regarding the recent reports of sexual assault from a female staff member against a male employee of the company.
GNNL considers such reports with utmost seriousness and remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a safe and respectful working environment for all employees.
The alleged incidents, which are reported to have taken place on December 22, 2023, and on December 27, 2023, were brought to the attention of the company’s management on Friday, December 29, 2023, afternoon – after a police report was made at the Alberttown Police Station. The lodging of a formal complaint led to the arrest of the male employee.
On becoming aware, GNNL promptly initiated an internal inquiry. Furthermore, the company has fully cooperated with the Guyana Police Force in their investigation. Additionally, the male employee was immediately sent on administrative leave pending the outcome of the police investigation.
GNNL places the highest priority on the safety and well-being of our employees, and we are dedicated to conducting a comprehensive and equitable investigation into this issue.

Jamaicans living abroad continued to make their mark on the world in 2023. A Kingston native was presented with an award for his dedication by the United States Navy, and a Jamaican made history when he became the highest-ranking Jamaican in New York’s Police Department. Miramar in Florida honored Jamaica’s Olympic champion and sprint legend with a bronze statue, and US President Joe Biden appointed a Jamaican to his Council of Economic Advisers. Jamaica sculptor Basil Watson won a major award in the United Kingdom for his work, “The Windrush Monument.”
Native of Kingston Honored by the United States Navy
Jamaican Warren Allen, a fireman apprentice in the United States Navy serving on the ship, USS Iwo Jima, received an award recognizing him for his “superior dedication.” The leadership on the ship presents an award each month to sailors who demonstrate dedication to the ship’s values, which address learning, improvement, wellness, ownership, and safety. Warren, who is from Kingston, was honored for exemplifying the ship’s core value of ownership. He said the award was very meaningful to him as it meant that his work and achievements were valued. Warren is a graduate of Wolmer’s Boys’ School and currently serves as a machinist’s mate on the amphibious assault ship, which is part of the Amphibious Readiness Group/Expeditionary Strike Group. These groups provide ship-to-shore movement via helicopter to the Marine Corps as well as by landing craft.
Jamaica-Born New York Police Officer Made History with Appointment as Borough Commander
Jamaican-born Ruel Stephenson became the highest-ranking Jamaican in the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the first Jamaican in the department’s history to serve in the role when he was selected to be borough commander. Stephenson was born in Clarendon and attended Race Course Primary School before moving to the United States at the age of 10. He now has the rank of Assistant Chief and is responsible for the Manhattan North Borough of the police department. Stephenson noted that his appointment will allow him to influence how the department engages with the Jamaican community in New York. Stephenson joined the New York City police department in 1995 as a patrolman in the 70th Precinct. He has risen through the ranks throughout his career, serving as sergeant, lieutenant, captain, deputy inspector, inspector, and now as deputy chief.
City of Miramar Honored Usain Bolt with His First Statue in the United States
The City of Miramar in Florida honored Jamaican sprint legend and Olympic champion, Usain Bolt, with a bronze statue created by Jamaican sculptor Basil Barrington Watson at the Ansin Sports Complex. This is the first statue of Bolt to be erected in the United States. Bolt, who is from Trelawny in Jamaica, is the world record-holder in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4×100 meter relay. He is the most decorated sprint athlete in history. Miramar is home to one of the world’s largest populations of Jamaicans outside of Jamaica, and according to the city’s vice-mayor, Alexandra P. Davis, the statue will be a constant reminder to aspiring athletes that anything is possible and that there are no limits, as Bolt himself often states.
Jamaican Appointed to U.S. President’s Council of Economic Advisers
Jamaican C. Kirabo Jackson was appointed by United States President Joe Biden to serve on his Council of Economic Advisers. His Jamaican father, Clement Jackson, was the first director of the Planning Institute of Jamaica, and his mother, originally from Trinidad and Tobago, is a lecturer at the University of Technology. In the announcement of Jackson’s appointment, the White House noted his exceptional academic career and his selection as the Abraham Harris Professor of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. He has worked as co-editor for the American Economic Journal, Economic Policy, and the Journal of Human Resources. He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2022 in recognition of his contributions to many fields.
Jamaican Sculptor Presented with Prestigious Public Arts Award in the United Kingdom
Jamaica sculptor Basil Watson is the winner of the Marsh Award, which is presented by the United Kingdom Public Statues and Sculptures Association. His artwork, “The Windrush Monument,” was selected by popular vote to receive the 2023 award. The monument, which is installed in London’s Waterloo Station, honors the people who came from the Caribbean on the HMS Windrush after World War II, heeding the call of the UK to help rebuild the country. The monument presents a visual narrative featuring a man, woman, and child with their suitcases to symbolize the significance of the Windrush journey in the development of the UK and its culture. Watson described his work as a “tangible and evocative” memorial to a pivotal moment in human history.
