The keynote speaker, US Ambassador to Guyana, Amb. Nicole Theriot, delivered a  powerful address, emphasising the importance of breaking barriers. She said,  “Empowering women is not just a goal; it’s a necessity for the progress of  any society. Tonight’s awardees exemplify the resilience and capability of  women in leadership roles, and their stories inspire us to continue  shattering glass ceilings.”

Ambassador Theriot also commended the Women’s Chamber for its achievements since  its birth in 2019 and encouraged the executives and general membership to continue to  be champions of change and an empowerment body for women owned businesses in  Guyana.

The highlight of the evening was the recognition of the awardees:

• Woman in Business Award: Ms. Upasna Mudlier of Denmor Garments  (Manufacturers) Inc.
• Business Excellence Award: Ms. Shamela John of RESYSCO by SJ.
• Entrepreneurial Excellence Award: Ms. Evie Kanhai-Gurchuran of Gurchuran  Investments Inc.

The Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s awards selection process, guided by  a committee of board members, ensures a fair and transparent recognition of outstanding  individuals and businesses.

In addition to the awards, the event saw the official installation of the new WCCIG Board  of Executives for the year 2023-2024, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to  excellence and diversity.

The re-elected President Rowena Elliot expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am  honoured to continue leading this incredible organisation. Together, with  our newly elected board members, we will strive to create a business  environment where women can thrive and succeed.”

The newly elected board members include Vice President Aysha Khan, Senior Director for  Public Relations Martina Johnson, Senior Director of Business Diversity Shevion Sears,  Secretary Josephine Tapp, Treasurer Shamela John, and Director of Outreach, Events,  and Fundraising Lisa Mohamed.

The 4th Annual Founders’ Dinner was not only a celebration of achievements but also a  testament to the WCCIG’s dedication to empowering women in leadership roles and  fostering a supportive business community. The event was held at the Marriott Hotel.

Leion Garraway of Norton Street, Georgetown, was hauled before City Magistrate Leron Daly charged with discharging a loaded firearm with intent to maim, disable, or cause grievous bodily harm; he was also charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges; The Police prosecutor strongly objected to baul citing Garraway’s involvement in similar crimes in the past.

The prosecutor recounted that the victim attended a party on November 25 at her friend’s Norton Street residence where Garraway also resides.

It is alleged that during the event, Garraway brandished a .32 pistol, directing it at the teenager and firing multiple shots, resulting in an injury to her left thumb.

After receiving medical attention at the Kitty Health Centre, the injured teen was released. Subsequently, the incident was reported to the Police, leading to Garraway’s arrest.

A search of his residence by the Police revealed the firearm and a live .32 ammunition in the backyard.

The magistrate upheld the prosecution’s objection and remanded Garraway to prison until January 19, 2024.

Police Headquarters had reported that the victim told investigators that Garraway was playing with the firearm at around 23:00 hrs when she heard a loud explosion and then felt a burning sensation in her left thumb, which started to bleed.

According to the Police, the child said Garraway then went to his backyard, where he hid the firearm among some concrete blocks.

42-year-old Chetram Ramjattan of Kilcoy Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice, on Friday revealed that he died from blunt trauma to the head and a fractured skull.

The body was identified by his sister, Kamaldai Ramjattan, and later handed over to the family for burial.

Ramajattan’s body was found in a drain in the neigbouring community of Fyrish Village in the vicinity of the Arjune’s Chicken Farm on November 30.

The suspects have been identified as Simon Wills, 28, and Henry Venezuela, 25, both labourers attached to the chicken farm. A female Venezuelan national is also said to be in Police custody.

The man’s body was found at the back of the property where the suspects lived.

Ramjattan left his sister’s house on November 25 and was not heard from or seen until his body was discovered. Reports indicate that he and the Venezuelan nationals had a misunderstanding during which he was beaten and chopped to death.

His butchered remains was found in a drain at the back of the property; his face and head were completely disfigured and there were numerous chop wounds about the body.
