Approximately 250 exhibitors are showcasing their products at the exhibition.

This year, a few focus of the exposition is information and communications technology (ICT), which is being expanded as part of the Government’s agenda of improving the e-commerce. The private sector is matching this development.

“It is catalysing innovation, efficiency and connectivity. ICT has become a driver of productivity, streamlining business and fostering entrepreneurship.

“It is opening avenues for e-commerce and digital services and has the potential to narrow geographical barriers,” Prime Minister Phillips said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Walrond said the spectacular event is a revitalisation of the nation’s business sector.

“We are here to restore and rejuvenate GuyExpo.

“Recognising it as an occasion for the entire family with the primary objective of showcasing the richness of our local products and services,” the minister said.

Several Government Ministers, private sector representatives and officials were also in attendance at the return office of the event that was first introduced in Guyana in 1995.

The event was not held since 2016 and its return is expected to boost business promotion. Small businesses, in particular, are expected to benefit from the new clientele and networking opportunities.

According to the police, the driver of the motor Jeep, after jumping the traffic light, lost control of his vehicle and struck Woman Constable Abel into motor car PAB 9932 which then collided with motor car PNN 8124.

The latter vehicle then spun and collided with Woman Inspector Castello and one of the drivers, Chris Allen, who were all flung into the air.

Woman Constable Abel landed about 20 feet away on the road surface with her left foot severed below the knee. Woman Inspector Castello and Allen landed on the southern grass parapet. They all received injuries on their bodies, while the motor Jeep turned turtle on the southern grass parapet.

The EMT was summoned and Woman Constable Abel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the Jeep all received injuries and were escorted to Georgetown Public Hospital along with the Woman Inspector, where they are seeking medical attention at the Accident and Emergency Unit. The body of Woman Constable Abel was escorted to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting  a Post-Mortem Examination

The scene was visited last night by Regional Commander 4‘C’ Assistant Commissioner Khali Pareshram and a team of Police ranks. Investigations continue.

“There are only two lots to be completed and we are pushing to have them completed by the end of the month… The two lots are to connect Lots One to Two in the vicinity of Red Road. That will be completed in time for the end of this month. A lot of work is ongoing to connect that area. There are doing the bridge to connect that road,” Croal said.

He added, “The other area is Mocha and that is to connect Lots Three to Four. In the coming week that will be completed. They are doing the final works in terms of being able to connect that area.”

Overall, Croal guaranteed that the entire Eccles to Diamond Four-Lane Highway will be commissioned in time for the Christmas season, to further alleviate traffic congestion on the East Bank of Demerara.

“In all, we will be ready for completion by the end of this month and so with certainty I can say for an early December we will be opening the Four- Lane Highway. Just a little more patience…I am sure…by December and Christmas you will be traversing the four-lane,” Croal noted.

The contract for the $13 billion project was awarded to 12 contractors in December 2021.

The project was slated to be completed within 18 months, which would have been by April 2023.

However, by then, a number of issues arose. The contractor for one of the lots was terminated and some settlers from Mocha had to be relocated, hence the delay.

The four-lane Highway forms part of the alternative East Bank Demerara road link which is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on the East Bank corridor.

“It’s alot of investment the government is making not just for housing and other social needs but also to provide other access as well as to address some of the congestion that we have, the build up in traffic and this is all part of the integrated road networking that we are speaking about,” Croal said.
