Jamaica’s rising middle-distance runner Navasky Anderson, ended the country’s campaign at the 19th Annual Pan American Games with a bronze medal in the men’s 800m. This marked a significant close to the event, showcasing Jamaica’s breadth of talent.
Anderson’s Bronze-Winning Run
On the final stretch of the Pan American Games, Navasky Anderson delivered a performance to remember, securing bronze in the 800m with a time of 1:46.40. Despite facing a setback with disqualification at the World Athletics Championships earlier in the year, Anderson bounced back, proving his mettle on the tracks of Santiago, Chile. Anderson was in good company on the podium, with Venezuela’s José Maita seizing gold in a swift 1:45.69, and Mexico’s Jesus Lopez taking silver with a close 1:46.04. This moment was a culmination of Anderson’s hard work and an indicator of his potential on the senior athletics circuit.
Resilience and Record-Breaking
Prior to his bronze in Santiago, Anderson had an impressive track record this year, which included breaking the Jamaican national record in the 800m. His time of 1:44.70 at the DC Track Championships not only shattered his own previous record but also secured his spot at the World Championships.
Jamaica’s Overall Performance
With Anderson’s contribution, Jamaica concluded the Pan American Games with a total of six medals: one gold and five bronze. This haul, though commendable, fell short of the nation’s 19-medal feat at the 2019 Games. Alongside Anderson’s bronze, Jamaica’s collection included a gold from 400m hurdler Jaheel Hyde, and bronze medals from cyclist Dahlia Palmer, discus throwers Samantha Hall and Fedrick Dacres, and wrestler Aaron Johnson. On Sunday, November 12, 2023, the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) in partnership with the Tourism Product Development Company (TDPCo) will present the “Salute to the Parish of Portland” as part of the cultural heritage series, which began in 2016. The aim of the event is to highlight the national significance of each parish in Jamaica and the contributions each has made to the nation’s heritage and culture.
A Cultural Extravaganza
The event, which will take place at Titchfield High School in Port Antonio from 1 pm to 4 pm, will feature performances and entertainment by the Charles and Moore Town Maroons, the Titchfield High School Choir, and Manchioneal Cultural Group, and Bigga-5 Entertainment. There will also be arts and crafts booths, tasty foods, and exhibits that explore the history and identity of Portland Parish. The IOJ’s public relations manager, Jolyn Gayle, added that the event will also showcase natives of the parish who have made notable contributions to its agricultural, tourism, and creative sectors. The “Salute to the Parish of Portland” will be recorded and accessed at the IOJ’s website.

Gayle shared that some 16 booths have registered exhibits for the celebration, along with a number of cultural organizations. These include the African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica, the National Museum of Jamaica, the Natural History Museum of Jamaica, and cultural groups from Portland. Gayle also thanked the sponsoring partners. The director of TPDCo, Lionel Myrie, said that partnering with the IOJ to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Portland was a “welcome opportunity” and would show how tourism has had a positive impact on Jamaica. He described Portland as not only an important cultural asset but a valuable addition to Jamaica’s tourism industry. He noted that the parish was the first to introduce the “all-inclusive” concept at Frenchman’s Cove, and it was the first to establish a hotel that featured “modern amenities.”
About Portland, Jamaica
The parish of Portland is located on the northeast coast of Jamaica and is one of the island’s rural areas. It features a portion of the Blue Mountains and is home to the Maroon communities of Moore Town and Charles Town. Its natural attractions include Frenchman’s Cove, Boston Beach, and Blue Lagoon, which is believed to be the crater of an extinct volcano. Seventeen rivers form a watery network throughout the parish, and rafting the rivers is popular with tourists. Over 782 films have been hot in Portland since the 1950s, including “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and “They Harder They Come.” Scenes from other films, including “Cocktail” and “Lord of the Flies” were also shot in the parish. Superstar singer Rihanna filmed her “Man Down” video in locations throughout Portland in 2013.

As the premiere agency for culture in the country, it has transformed the nation via its projects and programs. Deepavali commemorates the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana and his triumphant return to the kingdom after years of exile. The jubilant subjects of Ayodhya, keen to make Lord Rama’s homecoming as swift and safe as possible, illuminated the way with masses of twinkling diyas.
Universally recognized as the festival of light; the triumph of knowledge over ignorance and the substitution of all that is negative with that which is positive, we call on all Guyanese, in particular our Hindu brothers and sisters, to reflect upon the significance of this great festival and to inculcate its message into our daily lives.

As we again observe the Festival of Lights – Diwali – the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) takes this opportunity to extend best wishes to all Guyanese, particularly our Hindu brothers and sisters. Diwali is a time for celebration, but it is also a time for reflection – a time when we must remember that there are always others less fortunate than ourselves. This holiday reminds us that we should commit ourselves to helping those in need. For many, this is also a time to gather with family and to pray.
The Diwali celebration is one that today transcends one community and is supported nationally. The symbol of the lighted diyas is not only lovely to behold in the evening but it impacts the message of the value of spiritual enlightenment in our collective efforts to bring about conditions for our peace of mind and a satisfying life. With such sentiments in mind, GAWU is encouraged by the usually wide interest shown in the expectedly dazzling celebrations that are traditionally associated with Diwali.
Diwali honours the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge and wisdom over ignorance and thoughtlessness. Diwali also reminds us that we must each do our part to achieve that victory by committing ourselves to service others to ensure that together we continue moving closer to better and peaceful future we all seek. On this holy day, devotees around the country and worldwide will light diyas that symbolise the victory of light over darkness. May this divine light shower you with peace, prosperity, happiness, success and fulfilment. May it also encourage recommitment and rededication by all to make Guyana and the world a better place for all.
