Joseph Fiffee running away from police ranks

“On seeing the Police vehicle, he began to ride faster and turn into a street that runs North to South. The ranks gave chase, and he pulled out what appeared to be a handgun, and two loud explosions were heard.

“The ranks took cover, and one rank discharged a round in Fiffee’s direction, who by this time had dropped his bicycle and jumped a fence, where he collapsed,” the Police report noted.

Fiffee was picked up and upon examination of his body, what appeared to be a wound was seen on his lower back. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 09:44 hrs.

Police said they recovered two .25 spent shells, along with a .25 Pistol (without serial number) and a magazine containing three rounds, in a drain next to the fence where Fiffee had jumped.

The firearm, spent shells and ammunition were lodged.

Police said that between October 21, 2023 and November 3, 2023, Fiffee and another male were involved in seven robberies between Annandale and Non-Pareil, East Coast Demerara.

“During the spate of robberies, Fiffee would have wounded most of the victims, one of whom is presently hospitalised.

Fiffee was previously charged on 23rd April with Robbery Under Arms, and he was released from prison on the 30th August 2023.”

Norris slipped back to third on the first lap behind George Russell’s Mercedes but re-passed him on lap five.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez recovered from dropping behind Russell and team-mate Lewis Hamilton to finish third.

The Mexican, under pressure after a series of difficult races, dropped to fifth on the first lap from third on the grid, losing out to Russell at the first corner and then being passed by Hamilton around the outside at Turn Four.

Perez re-passed Hamilton at Turn Four for fourth and then set off after Russell.

They exchanged places twice on lap eight, Perez passing Russell into Turn One and then Russell retaking the position, like Hamilton on the first lap around the outside of Turn Four.

But two laps later, Perez made a move stick into Turn One and was able to secure third place.

Russell hung on to fourth place, his pace fading as the race ran its distance, but Hamilton, also struggling, slipped behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who took fifth with three laps to go.

Hamilton then had to take on Alpha Tauri’s Yuki Tsunoda, who passed the seven-time champion for sixth place with two laps to go and set off after Leclerc, crossing the line right on the Ferrari’s tail.

Behind Hamilton, five seconds adrift of Tsunoda, Ricciardo in the second Alpha Tauri chased Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz across the line, the Spaniard securing the final point. (BBC)

They did well to bowl out Australia for 286 and showed some fight with the bat, but were still dismissed for 253.

Jonny Bairstow was caught down the leg side off the first ball of the chase and Joe Root followed for 13, leaving Ben Stokes to play a lone hand as he hinted at another special knock.

Their attention now turns to attempting to avoid the embarrassment of failing to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy by finishing outside the top eight in India.

Haris Rauf’s figures of 1-82 were the most expensive by a Pakistan bowler in World Cup history, only for Shaheen Afridi to break the record minutes later with 0-90.

The result keeps the group stage open, though New Zealand remain favourites for a semi-final spot because of their superior net-run rate to Afghanistan and Pakistan, with all three teams on eight points.

Pakistan’s next game comes against England on 11 November, who could still be in contention for a semi-final spot if they beat Australia in Saturday’s later fixture. (BBC)
