GPL considers purchasing electricity from Giftland Mall; new generators here by Nov 22

Upon assuming office in 2020, the PPP/C government had an arrangement with Giftland Mall for them to produce electricity to the national grid.

But that stopped after Giftland experienced some issues.

“I think now they say they can and we are engaging them,” Indar said.

Additionally, Indar noted that GPL has purchased a number of generators and transformers to a tune of US$27M from Apan Energy. When commissioned, he said this will add 28.9 megawatts to their capacity.

“We are at a point where we awarded 28.9 megawatts and that is from a company called Apan Energy. They have indicated to us that the engines that we bought are already service and prepared, they are already shipped to the port…The expected arrival date in Guyana is around the 22 November. They have also said to me that there are some transformers,” Indar explained.

According to Indar, once the new equipment is set up and commissioned, load shedding is expected to drastically reduce by mid-December.

“We are targeting the 15 of December. So between now and the 15 of December is when this spate of low shedding will have to be managed,” he said.

At present, GPL has the capacity to generate 167 megawatts. The demand over the past week has been 172 megawatts.

“GPL has right now a number of generating sets, that total, in terms of reliable operating sets about 167 megawatts. Right now, the country over the last week, we have seen the peak demand. About 172 megawatts so because of that short fall, we see some blackouts.

“The generators just have the generating capacity to feed of the demand and we know where this demand is coming from,” Indar said.

While GPL has subsidized over US$100M, Indar noted that there was no increase in prices for electricity for customers.

“We have not raised the price on anyone…They had to sacrifice to some extent some of the things that they wanted to do, just to make sure they didn’t raise the price on customers,” Indar said.

GFF President unveils FIFA-approved design for National Training Centre

President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Wayne Forde on Thursday unveiled the final design for the federation’s National Training Centre in Providence, East Bank Demerara.

The architectural firm SRKN presented the blueprint for the multi-million-dollar facility to the media on November 2.

The reveal ceremony was also attended by GFF First-Vice President Brigadier General (Ret) Bruce Lovel, representatives of the federation’s Regional Associations and Triston Gomes of SRKN architectural company amongst others.

President Forde noted that the long-cherished vision of establishing a cutting-edge football facility in Guyana is coming to fruition thanks to the unwavering commitment of all our valued partners, including FIFA and Concacaf.

“The construction of the Guyana Football Federation first official Home of Football represents the fulfilment of a commitment we made to the Members of the GFF back in 2015. After an extensive and comprehensive design and engineering undertaking, we now have a well thought out facility, accepted and approved by FIFA. We will now enter a new phase of intensive construction activities to complete this project over the next three years. This is a watershed moment for the entire football fraternity.”

He said that already national and youth teams are using the NTC for training sessions and competitions, adding that the overarching goal is to eventually host international matches that will allow fans to witness the talent of our national teams.

“The GFF and our football family are already benefiting from this groundbreaking infrastructure project. Our boys and girls are enjoying weekly Academy Training Centre (ATC) programmes along with grassroots football and national team training and preparation.”

The fully operational international standard stadium, encompassing top-notch football pitch, modern office spaces, accommodation, state-of-the-art media facilities and fan stands, will be completed in three years.

In early October, President Forde and Second Vice-President Rawlston Adams conducted an on-site assessment of the FIFA-approved floodlight installation project at the NTC.

The lighting contract was awarded to Musco Sport Lighting, a United States-based company, which has enlisted the services of Cummings Electrical, a local partner, for specific aspects of the project. The floodlights are expected to be fully operational by early December.

The GFF remains steadfast in its commitment to raising the bar of football in Guyana through extensive training programmes and the construction of cutting-edge facilities for hosting both local and international matches. (GFF Press Release)
