Initially, Rooplall Abrahim was charged alongside Boucher and Latchman. In 2020, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter and received a 17-year sentence in exchange for cooperating with the State. He appeared as their star witness in the trial against his co-accused.

During the sentencing hearing, Jagmohan’s mother, Pamela broke down in tears as she delivered her victim impact statement.

“I’m very hurt because my son was innocent. He was very hard-working, he is the one who helped us in the rice field,” the grieving woman said.

Pamela said that her son had four children and after his demise, his wife was going to put them up for adoption, but she took them in instead.

With whatever little savings she had, Pamela said she built a “little house” and she is now responsible for their upbringing.

“I’m selling at the market to take care of them…It is very hard,” the woman said as she explained to the court that she suffered a nervous breakdown after losing her son.

In his sentencing remarks, Justice Kissoon considered that the victim was unarmed and alone, without an escort or prison officer present when he was attacked by the two accused, along with Abrahim.

The judge described the murder as a “cold, calculated and deliberate” act, which placed it at the high end of the scale of gravity and seriousness.

Consequently, Boucher and Latchman were sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after serving 30 years.

Boucher, Latchman and Abrahim were already on remand at the time for separate murders. Neshan Jagmohan and his younger brother Ramnarine Jagmohan were also on remand for murder.

On June 21, 2017, at the New Amsterdam Prison, the three murdered Neshan and wounded his brother, Ramnarine with intent to murder him as well.

The men are yet to be tried for the lesser offence.

On the day in question, the Jagmohan brothers had in their possession an improvised weapon which they intended to sell to an inmate whose name was given as Delroy Frazer to murder Boucher.

However, Boucher got wind of the plot and was under the impression that the Jagmohan brothers were a part of the plot. Therefore, he along with the two other inmates attacked the Jagmohan brothers.

Neshan sustained 25 stab wounds on his body and succumbed at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, while Ramnarine was stabbed in his right side.

The Jagmohan brothers were on remand for the 2013 murder of Corentyne businessman Devindra Deodat, 34. However, in 2019, Ramnarine was acquitted of the crime.

Abrahim is currently serving two life sentences in addition to the 17-year jail term for brutal murders.

Boucher is no stranger to the law, in 2009 he was charged with robbery and was sentenced to two years in jail. In 2015, he was charged with robbery again and was sentenced to four years in jail.

And, they agreed that no effort should be spared to resist the country’s persistent endeavours to undermine Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In fact, the statement noted that President Ali and the Opposition Leader are confident that the issue would be resolved by the International Court of Justice.

Even so, Jagdeo said there are some overseas-based Guyanese, each with a substantial social media following, who have been distorting the national position on the matter.

“I want to condemn their attempt to politicise this matter and to distort anything to do with our border,” he emphasised.

Venezuela claims two-thirds of Guyana’s territory, that is, the entire Essequibo region and the exclusive economic zone offshore.

After bilateral talks failed, the matter was referred to the World Court where Guyana is seeking a final, binding judgement that the Essequibo region belongs to Guyana and not Venezuela.

Jagdeo said that this is a matter that requires national consensus.

“This is bigger than all of us.

“…Where it concerns our country, our sovereignty, our people as a whole, that is something outside of politics,” Jagdeo said.

the murder of 22-year-old Amit Singh are currently working to confirm the alibis provided by three of the four suspects, who were implicated in the crime by the alleged mastermind.

Singh was lured, brutally beaten and robbed on Tuesday; his battered body was discovered in a Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown house owned by the family of Yogeendra Sukhdeo, the main suspect.

Singh was taken there by Sukhdeo to purchase a large quantity of gold. Hours after Singh’s battered body was found, Police arrested Sukhdeo.

A search was subsequently conducted at his 20^th Avenue Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara house, where over $7.7M was found in his bedroom.

Sukhdeo has since confessed to the crime and reportedly implicated three of his employees but they have since denied their involvement.

They provided investigators with details as to where they were at the time of the murder and the detectives are still trying to verify the information. All four men remain in custody.

Sukhdeo later retracted his statement and told detectives that he acted alone when he bludgeoned Singh to the head with a piece of wood, attempted to strangle him, wrapped his body in a sheet and locked him inside the house before leaving.

Singh’s family owns and operates D. Singh Trading at Campbellville; the young man got involved in the gold business some time ago with the full support of his family.

The News Room has since confirmed that the two men are not “best friends” as is being claimed by sections of the media. Relatives say they were associates who were involved in previous business transactions.

eight of 14 oil blocks, the government has finally awarded eight of the blocks to six different companies.

This was announced by Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday during a party press conference at the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Headquarters at Freedom House.

The list of the companies and blocks are:

• S3 has been awarded to Sispro Inc., a company headed by four Guyanese businesswomen
• S4 to a consortium comprising Total Energies EP Guyana BV; Qatar Energy International E&P LLC; Petronas E&P Overseas Ventures SDN BHD (Malaysia)
• S5 to International Group Investment Inc, a Nigerian group
• S7 to Liberty Petroleum Corporation of the US and Ghana-based Cybele Energy Limited
• S8 to a the ExxonMobil, Hess and CNOOC consortium currently operating in the Stabroek Block offshore
• S10 was also awarded to the International Group Investment Inc.
• D1 went to Delcorp Inc Guyana and Watad Energy and Arabian Drillers of Saudi Arabia, two Saudi Arabian companies that are incorporated
• And D2 also went to Sispro Inc.

‘S’ refers to blocks in shallow water while ‘D’ refers to blocks in deep water; there were 11 shallow water and three deep water blocks up for grabs.

Meanwhile, Jagdeo noted that the government will now enter into negotiations with the companies in keeping with the Petroleum Activities law.

“We’ve been told that everyone has confirmed that they have the resources to pay the signing bonus. US$10 million for each shallow block and US$20 million for each in the deep water.

“For any of this to move forward, at a minimum these companies have to meet this requirement,” Jagdeo said.

He also addressed concerns raised.

“We may have a situation where we may not be able to finalise with everyone,” he cautioned, reflecting on concerns already raised by ExxonMobil about fiscal terms.

Jagdeo said the government will not change those fiscal terms and as such, he said, “If the demands are extreme, then we will simply not proceed with that.”
