After failing to trouble the score, National Selectee Quentin Sampson rocked the Select XI top-order, grabbing 4-18 from five overs while Garfield Williams (2-10) and Antony Adams (2-25) chipped in the wickets column.

Opener Raymond Perez (25) and Suresh Dhani (23) were the only batsmen to surpass 20 for the Select XI.

The Inter-County tournament is being used as a gauge to select Guyana Harpy Eagles’ 14-man squad for the Regional Super50 in Trinidad and Tobago from October 17 – November 11.

Guyana has not won a Regional 50-Over title since 2005 and is seeking to complete the ‘Regional Treble’ this year.

Meanwhile, Mahdia defended their title in cricket after posting a daunting 107-5 in 10 overs and then restricted Region One to 68-7.

Raydon Austin took 3-7, while Ershaad Ali had 2-16.

Beepaul Bandu top-scored for Mahdia with 37 (1×4; 4x6s).

In the female category, Region Seven ladies took the title after they aced the chase of 55 in just five overs after limiting Region One to 54-6 from eight overs.

The Games concluded after five days of activities, with Track and Field added to the usual disciplines such as Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Swimming, and Archery.

The consultation with teachers was promised by President Ali in his bid to determine how the education sector and the lives of teachers can be improved.

A plethora of other issues were outlined by the teachers including the need for better accommodation for teachers, especially those in the hinterland, more qualified teachers and staff, access to internet and transportation for hinterland schools, salary adjustments and overcrowding in schools.

“We are going to complete the infrastructure audit of all the schools and all the education facilities, including the recreation facilities, across the country so we will have a gap analysis as to what has to be done and prioritize where we are going to definitely address those issues,” President Ali said.

“In every schools where there is overcrowding we are going to work on that as priority to give extension to those schools in the new budget process,” the President stated.

Additionally, the teachers said there is a need for reading specialists in schools and facilities for special needs children.

In response to the lack of human resources, President Ali informed those gathered that he was informed by Minister of Education that in November this year, 2,300 teachers will be graduating.

These teachers, he said will be dispatched to schools across the country.

Some teachers also raised concerns about poor infrastructure and ventilation in light of the recent hot temperature, which has been affecting the learning pace of children.

“Fans, white board everything will be provided,” President Ali responded.

In terms of internet access, President Ali ordered during the meeting that officials from the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) were summoned to meet with the head teachers and deputies to fix the problem immediately.

After listening to the thirty-five issues raised by the head teachers and deputies, President Ali said in the coming weeks he will be holding discussions with the Cabinet.

And thereafter, the Head of State said they will come up with proposals to address the issues and meet the demands of the sector to make ensure everyone is comfortable.

“Now that I have a full understanding directly from you…I am in a better position to come up with a holistic approach as to how we will deal with the welfare of students and teachers together,” President Ali said.

Minister of Education Priya Manickchand, Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton and Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh were also present at the meeting.

The response to Haiti’s request for help was delayed due to a struggle to find a country willing to lead a security assistance mission. Kenya stepped forward in July with a pledge of 1,000 police. The Bahamas then committed 150 people, while Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda are also willing to help.

“Since independence, the Magistrates’ Court at Anna Regina was accommodated at Anna Regina Police Station. For the first time it will get a new abode,” the Attorney General said.

The Legal Affairs Minister pointed to the various Magistrates’ Courts being constructed across the country and reminded that brand new court buildings have already been constructed at Suddie and Charity.

Significantly, a huge edifice is being constructed at Suddie to house the Deeds and Commercial Registries Authority and living quarters and offices have already been constructed at Onderneeming to house prosecutors from the Director of Public Prosecutions Chambers who are prosecuting cases on the Essequibo Coast. These are all part of the transformational changes taking place, not only in the administration of justice in Region Two, but part of the general transformation in almost every area of endeavour in the region.

The Chancellor, in her remarks, thanked Central Government for continuing to support the judiciary and promised added complements to the Magistracy to ensure speedy disposal of cases in the region. The Chancellor also promised that a Land Court Judge will soon be appointed for the Essequibo Coast.
