Savory hits 63 in drawn Harpy Eagles practice game

Wicketkeeper/batsman Kemol Savory spent valuable time at the crease, scoring only the second half-century of the game as the Guyana Harpy Eagles practice match between Tevin Imlach XI and Matthew Nandu XI meandered to a tame draw on Saturday at the Everest Ground.

The rain-affected three-day game saw runs hard to come by with no team getting a total beyond 180; a total of 23 wickets fell.

Resuming the final day on 110-2 in response to Imlach XI’s first innings score of 180, Nandu XI managed 164 all out, losing the last eight wickets for just 40 runs.

Zeynul Ramsammy added just two to his overnight score of 30, while Savory was the ninth batsman dismissed for 63 off 146 balls (4x4s, 1x6s), the highest individual score of the match.

Shamar Apple (3), Romario Ramdeholl (2), Thaddeus Lovell (1), Aryan Persaud (1), Chanderpaul Ramraj (0) and Nial Smith (1) were all dismissed cheaply.

Off-spinner Richie Looknauth produced a miserly bowling performance, claiming 3-29 off 25 overs, 14 of which were maidens, while left-arm spinner Antony Adams bagged 3-36 off 18 and leg-spinner Nityanand Mathura 2-18 off 4.2 overs.

Batting a second time, Imlach XI reached 62-3 by stumps with openers Raymond Perez (29) and Urshadeva Balgobin (22) adding 53 for the first wicket. Balgobin was the other player with a fifty in the match, scoring 59 in the first innings.

Romario Ramdeholl (1-2), Aryan Persaud (1-3) and Micah Amsterdam (1-33) were the wicket-takers.

A second practice game will be held at Everest on March 17-19, with the third set for GCC from March 22-24.

The Guyana Harpy Eagles are the reigning West Indies Four-Day champions, having won the last three championships on the trot and eight of the last 10 titles.

  • Winning start for Herstelling and Kuru Kururu in East Bank Inter-Village Football

Winning start for Herstelling and Kuru Kururu in East Bank Inter-Village Football

Competitive football action returned to the East Bank corridor after a long hiatus when the inaugural East Bank Inter-Village Competition kicked off at the Eccles EE Ground on Saturday evening following a colourful march past of the villages.

It was a history making night on many fronts as it was also the first time that this ground hosted a competitive football match.

This new facility has been developed under the Government of Guyana’s Ground Enhancement initiative and jointly undertaken by the Ministry of Housing and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

Apart from the march past before on-field action, there was also the distribution of equipment by the National Sports Commission to each village by Minister within the Office of The Prime Minister Kwame McCoy, Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, Vice-Chairperson of the National Sports Commission Cristy Campbell, National Footballer Jerome Harrigan and Minister of Housing Collin Croal.

They also joined in the official kickoff of the tournament’s first match.

Minister Kwame McCoy and Collin Croal participated in the kickoff of the tournament at the Eccles EE Ground on Saturday night

The Soesdyke Linden Highway based Kuru Kururu suited up against one of the top villages in Agricola as group A play got underway. Teams are battling in a round-robin format with the top two from each of the four groups earning a place in the final eight when the knockout phase will begin.

The highway boys came to the show to make their presence felt on a historic day and wanted to etch their name in the history books. They drew first blood 22 minutes into the opening half when Leroy Evans breached the Agricola defense and goalkeeper, Christopher Adams.

The half ended with Kuru Kururu enjoying a slim lead and Agricola relishing the opportunity of leveling things up and even going ahead. In the 57th minute, Kuru Kururu doubled the advantage with a Kevin Scott strike.

Even though, Agricola halved the advantage when Shemar Sampson found the back of the net in the 61st minute, veteran forward, Marvin ‘Munro’ Joseph rolled back the years when he reestablished their two-goal cushion on the stroke of full time.

Agricola has now found themselves in a must win situation when they come up against Mocha, defeat will see them exiting the competition.

Herstelling goal scorers Johenni Mendoza (right) and Malcolm Hendricks

The feature game of the night pitted a young Herstelling side against Lower Soesdyke. It was a very intense encounter as the Lower Soesdyke boys used their height advantage to good effect but Herstelling never back down.

The first 35 minutes did not separate the two villages as though chances were created either side of the pitch. It was the final four-minutes of the clash that saw Herstelling scoring back-to-back goals that sealed full points for them in this Group B clash.

Johenni Mendoza broke the deadlock in the 66th minute and two minutes later, junior national and Elite League player, Malcolm Hendricks knocked the wind of the sail of Nijuan Hooke, caught out of position.

The win for Herstelling has placed then in a good position to earn a quarter-final berth, while Lower Soesdyke will have to win their next clash against Swan if they are to stand a chance of advancing.

On Sunday (March 15), Grove and Circuitville collide in the first game of another double-header, while Timehri and Kaneville clash in the feature contest.

Five in custody for armed robbery, one shot during arrest

Five men are now in police custody after allegedly robbing a Chinese national at gunpoint on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred at Chappel Street, between Durban and Hadfield Streets, Lodge, Georgetown.

Police did not name the victim but said at about 15:03h on Saturday, the victim was driving a minibus along Chappel Street when his path was blocked by a black Toyota Auris motor car. Two motorcycles reportedly rode up and held him at gunpoint. He was relieved of a bag. The police did not disclose the contents of the bag.

The suspects fled the scene. However, with the aid of the Smart City surveillance cameras, police ranks tracked the movements of the suspects and the vehicles used in the alleged robbery. The motorcycles were later seen in James Street, Albouystown, where the suspects reportedly joined the black Toyota Auris motor car and proceeded into Bel Air, Georgetown.

Police ranks later intercepted the motor car in Eping Avenue, Bel Air. During the operation, one suspect, a 22-year-old male of ‘E’ Field, Sophia, allegedly pulled a firearm from his waist and pointed it at a police rank, who discharged a round and injured him to his left thigh. • Queen’s College quartet undergoes specialised squash training

Queen’s College quartet undergoes specialised squash training

Less than a year after making history as the first public school in Guyana to launch its own squash club, Queen’s College  is now pioneering a professional coaching pathway.

At the centre of this latest development is a unique quartet: two Physical Education teachers and two budding student-athletes, all currently undergoing a rigorous Level I Coaching Course at the Georgetown Club.

Leading the sessions is the venerable, award-winning coach Carl Ince.

While the QC Squash Club has flourished since its May 2025 debut, the goal of this initiative is to integrate squash into the broader school curriculum, ensuring the sport isn’t just a club activity, but a fundamental part of the PE experience for every student.

The participation of PE Teacher Jude Holder and Assistant PE Teacher Kelton Jennings marks a significant milestone.

By equipping staff with these specialised skills, QC is laying the groundwork for teaching squash at the CXC level, providing students with both athletic and academic pathways in the sport.

The coaching cohort is bolstered by two QC students working alongside their mentors to sharpen their tactical understanding of the game. This focus on development is already yielding tangible results on the national stage.

The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) recently fast-tracked two of the club’s brightest prospects into the national Development Squad. Nicholas Mohamed and Nyela Glasgow, both competing in the Under-15 category, have been identified as key figures for the future.

As the club nears its first anniversary this May, the focus remains on expansion. Plans are already underway to celebrate the one-year milestone with a series of events, with further details expected in the coming weeks.

  • Antonelli wins Chinese GP as McLarens fail to start

Antonelli wins Chinese GP as McLarens fail to start

Teenager Kimi Antonelli took his first Formula 1 victory as he led team-mate George Russell home in a Mercedes one-two at the Chinese Grand Prix.

The 19-year-old Italian became the second youngest grand prix winner in history, a day after becoming the youngest pole-sitter, with a controlled drive after briefly losing the lead at the start to Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari.

Only Max Verstappen, who won for the first time aged 18 at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, has taken the chequered flag in F1 at a younger age than Antonelli.

Antonelli fought back tears and struggled for words during his post-race interview as the enormity of the moment sunk in.

Russell’s second place ensures he keeps the championship lead, by four points from Antonelli, after a race compromised by losing positions following an early safety car.

Behind them, Hamilton and Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc staged a gripping duel for the first two-thirds of the race

They swapped positions multiple times at various points in the race before Hamilton finally secured his first podium finish for Ferrari since joining them at the start of last season. (BBC SPORT)

  • Finance Min. encourages IDB to expand its instruments to be more responsive to Caribbean needs

Finance Min. encourages IDB to expand its instruments to be more responsive to Caribbean needs

See full statement from the Ministry of Finance:

As the 2026 Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the IDB and IDB-Invest continued today in Asunción, Paraguay. Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh while commending the progress made by the Bank and highlighting that in 2025  the institution moved decisively from reforms to implementation, also encouraged the Bank to expand and ‘tailor its lending instruments to country context’, and for the Bank to ‘recognise and use local systems’.

“The countries in the Caribbean region remain amongst the most vulnerable in the world to more frequent and extreme natural disasters, external shocks, and global economic volatility. Our access to resources and financing remains limited, while our fiscal space remains tight to support our development agendas, and for these reasons, we welcome a bigger and better Bank with relevant and appropriate support for our countries. Even as our countries continue to demonstrate resilience, we require flexible financing tools, stronger private sector engagement, and targeted interventions to overcome structural constraints that hamper growth and support resilience,” Dr. Singh explained.

The Minister who also submitted a statement as Chair of the Caribbean constituency further contended that the decisions endorsed by the region today, whether as independent sovereign nations or collectively as a Region, will no doubt determine whether ‘we can turn our collective challenges into opportunities for further accelerating economic growth,  increased regional trade, and make sufficient investment in climate-resilient infrastructure for the sustained development of Latin America and the Caribbean’.

Minister Singh then posited that the convergence between the region’s development priorities and the IDB Group’s mandate continues to present ample opportunity for partnership and that it was in this context that the IDBG remains a highly valued and the largest development partner for the Caribbean and that the region is committed to strengthening that partnership.

Turning his attention to Disaster Risk Instruments, the Minister pointed out that as a disaster-prone region, the Caribbean welcomes the Bank’s new Disaster Risk Management Action Plan for 2026-2030 which emphasizes prevention, preparedness, resilient recovery, and financial protection through innovative tools such as contingent credit facilities, catastrophe insurance, and climate-resilient financing instruments as he noted that these tools will be critical in helping Caribbean countries strengthen fiscal resilience and improve preparedness for future shocks In this regard, on behalf of the Region, Minister Singh acknowledged and expressed the Bank’s support to Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa in 2025.

Homing in on Guyana during his speech at the forum, the finance minister highlighted the increased approvals and net financial flows from the IDB Group.

“We underscore the importance of policy-based lending as a flexible and effective development instrument which Guyana has successfully applied across many areas over the years such as justice reform, competitiveness, financial sector strengthening and human services,” Dr Singh said but further emphasized that ‘the importance of tailoring lending instruments to national circumstances, including greater use of country systems to strengthen ownership, efficiency and sustainability’.

On the private sector side, Minister Singh said Guyana welcomes the expanding role of IDB Invest in the country following its capitalization and posited that this country looks forward to increased engagement to support rapidly emerging investment opportunities, including in areas such as transport and energy infrastructure, accelerating productive diversification and competitiveness, unlocking trade opportunities, and deepening regional integration. He, therefore, encouraged the financial institution to expand its use of instruments such as equity and local-currency financing to enhance the bankability and scale of projects for financing.

With Guyana’s focus on economic diversification, Dr Singh, on behalf of government,  also welcomed IDB Lab’s continued focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, and scalable private-sector solutions, which, he noted, are essential for economic diversification and long-term resilience.

He concluded by reaffirming Guyana’s strong support for the IDB Group and its reform agenda, expressing confidence that with the completion of these reforms and the capitalization of IDB Invest and replenishment of IDB Lab,  the IDB Group will be an even stronger and more responsive partner for the region.

Dr. Singh is accompanied in Paraguay by the Executive Director in the Caribbean Office of the IDB, Ms. Navita Ramroop, Director of Projects, and Senior Economic and Financial Analyst at the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Bernard Lord and Ms. Ronette Hetsberger, respectively.

  • Guyanese runner Hicks Mittelholzer targets sub-three-hour finish at Seoul Marathon

Guyanese runner Hicks Mittelholzer targets sub-three-hour finish at Seoul Marathon

Guyanese long-distance runner Hicks Mittelholzer is aiming to break the three-hour mark at the Seoul Marathon on Sunday as he continues his push to become one of the country’s top distance athletes.

Mittelholzer, originally from Kwakwani and now living in Georgetown, said the 26.2-mile race represents another step in his ambition to establish himself among elite marathon runners.

“My overall goal is to finish under three hours,” he said ahead of the race.

The Seoul Marathon is his second major marathon after competing in the Barbados Marathon in 2025, where he finished the race in three hours, 24 minutes.

Although that race was primarily for experience, he performed strongly, placing first in the 21-25 age category, sixth among male runners, and eighth overall.

Mittelholzer said his journey into distance running began modestly in 2018, when he started running casually along the Georgetown seawall.

As his interest grew, he began competing more seriously, eventually representing the University of Guyana (UG) where he emerged as one of the institution’s top athletes.

In 2024, he became UG’s champion long-distance athlete, and in 2025 he was crowned overall male champion athlete at the university.

Over time he progressed from shorter races to longer distances.

“As time progressed, the hunger grew and I wanted a bigger challenge,” he said, explaining that he gradually moved from 5km races to 10km events, before taking on the marathon distance.

He acknowledged that marathon running requires significant preparation, including specialised equipment, proper nutrition and recovery.

“It’s really challenging to run the distance,” he said.

Mittelholzer, who works as an aircraft technician with the Guyana Defence Force, said he hopes his journey can inspire other aspiring athletes in Guyana.

“There are a lot of people in Guyana who have talent and want to do this, but many things can hold them back,” he said. “I want to show that there is a way.”

He credited his progress to support from the local running community, particularly Stride 592, as well as training partners he refers to as the “4 a.m. club.”

Mittelholzer also thanked his sponsors, including Royal Castle and Bounty Farms, for helping make his participation in the Seoul Marathon possible.

“There has been a lot of work, determination and pushing to get here,” he said.
