WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL – Do Prayers Really Work?

If you are like some people, you have probably asked this question several times. For some of us, it seems as if God is asleep on the job, so to speak, because the realities of our circumstances seem to shout at us ever so loudly. We are tested on every side; in our relationships, health, jobs, and finances, to name a few, and somewhere in the back of our minds is a nagging doubt as to whether God is paying attention or not. Can He do anything, and if so, why doesn’t He?

We could ask the same question as we look at the chaos that continues to take place in various parts of the world. Following the national and international news is potentially depressing. No longer are we talking about rumors of war, we have more wars going on than most of us realize. Earthquakes, tsunamis, famines, droughts, religious persecution, and so much more are the order of the day. Where is God? Didn’t He promise, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14, KJV)? If the world was a corporation of which God was the CEO, the board of that corporation would probably consider replacing Him for failing to deliver what He promised.

The Bible is the only resource we have that speaks of God’s ability and integrity. It is His Word and we are told that He cannot lie. In Numbers 23:19 we read, “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?” Those are serious questions we need to ponder. Whatever God said, He will do, and whatever He has spoken, He shall make good. That’s about as solid an assurance of God’s ability and integrity as one could get. The interesting thing is that Jesus prayed; therefore, there must have been no doubt in His mind that prayers, including yours and mine, prayed in the will of God, do make a difference.

We can rest assured that God is not indifferent to the things that are important to us (1 Peter 5:7). Christian author Max Lucado was right when he said, “Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the one who hears it and not in the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference.” Persistent prayer works and though the answers we seek may not be immediately realized, it does not mean that God is not working on our behalf. Don’t give in to discouragement. He is faithful to those who love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations (Deut. 7:9). PUSH through. Keep on Praying Until Something Happens.

A Chat with Jamaican Actor Dale Elliott, Brings Hilarious Comedy Show to South Florida

On Saturday, 16 September 2023, the Coral Springs Center for the Arts in Broward will play host to an evening of laughter courtesy of Jamaican actor now fast-rising comedy sensation Dale Elliott, with his “Dale Elliott Problem Child Bad Pickney Tour.” This comedic spectacle promises to be a much-anticipated event. His humorous sketches, featured on platforms like Tik Tok and Instagram, vividly depict his upbringing in Jamaica, striking a chord with social media users living well beyond the Caribbean. He took a moment to chat with us about his new venture into comedy and give a glimpse of what the show will be like.

Firstly, congratulations on what seems to be the early-success of the Problem Child: Bad Pickney Comedy Tour. Are there any plans to take it to Jamaica?

For now I am more focused on building a brand and expanding internationally, but of course, I will have a show in Jamaica in the future. I just want it to be a good show and a highly anticipated one. For now it’s just in the early stages.

Where in South Florida can we get tickets to the show?

Tickets are available on my website. This show is located in South Florida at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts.

And do you plan to make any other stops in North America?

Yes, I have a bunch of stops including Hartford, Atlanta, New Jersey , Washington DC, Philadelphia, Orlando, Tampa, Baltimore, and Upstate New York.

Your jokes and sketches are centered around your experience growing up as a child in Jamaica. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being a very rude pickney, how rude were you as a child?

From a score of 1-10, I would say I was about 15.

Well it seems you’re a certified “rude pickney”. You recently announced Julie Mango as the host of the South Florida show, tell us more about this collaboration.

I’ve always wanted to work with Julie Mango and this was the perfect opportunity to share the stage with her.

Julie and Dale in one place, I’m laughing already. You seem to invest heavily in your creative work, what keeps you motivated?

I stay motivated because I have a goal to make my family proud, and to achieve things unimaginable to the average person.

Buss Ears podcast, comedy tour, movies, merch, what more can we expect from Dale Elliott’s brands?

For now I am focused on YouTube and stand-up comedy, but very soon I will be on the big screen again.

Caribbean Genres Celebrated at First-Ever Caribbean Music Awards

The inaugural staging of the Caribbean Music Awards honored all forms and genres of Caribbean music, including dancehall, reggae, soca, and zouk. The event was hosted by Grammy Award winner Wyclef Jean and held at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday 31 August 2023. In addition to the presentation of awards, the celebration featured performances by Wayne Wonder, Alison Hinds, Jada Kingdom, Dexta Daps, Kranium, Nailah Blackman, Ding Dong, Rupee, Baby Cham, Toni-Ann Singh, Romain Virgo, Angela Hunte and Stone Love, as well as appearances by Doug E. Fresh, Skeng, MYA, Spice, Morgan Heritage, Konshens, Karlie Redd and Michael Rainey Jr. The awards program was streamed through Tempo Networks/YouTube and Instagram via @CaribbeanEliteMagazine.

Award Winners

Recording artist Nicki Minaj, who is originally from Trinidad and Tobago, won the award for Collaboration of the Year in the dancehall/reggae category for the track “Likkle Miss,” which features Skeng on Minaj’s “Queen Radio: Volume 1.” The album entered Billboard’s 200 list at Number 10 in August 2022. Jamaica’s Beres Hammond received an Elite Icon Award and Male Artist of the Year in the reggae category. A Lifetime Achievement Award and the award for Soca Male Artist of the Year was presented to Machel Montano. Kabaka Pyramid, Ding Dong, and Patrice Roberts were other double award winners. Legendary reggae recording artist Buju Banton received a Humanitarian Award for his philanthropy and work with his foundation, the Buju Banton Foundation.

Jamaican Olympic Champion Hansle Parchment Wins 110-Meter Hurdles Race in Croatia

Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment was the winner of the 110-meter hurdles race at the Boris Hanžeković Memorial in Zagreb, Croatia, on 10 September 2023. Parchment, 31, ran the distance in 13.13 seconds, defeating his nearest competitor Daniel Roberts of the United States by two seconds. Roberts came in second with 13.15 seconds, while the third place hurdler was Wilhem Belocian of France who clocked 13.30 seconds.

Winning Performances

Hansle Parchment represented Jamaica at the 2012 and 2020 Olympic Games. In 2012, he won the Olympic trials in Jamaica with a personal best at the time of 13.18 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and qualified for the Summer Games in London. He won a bronze medal in the final on August 8, 2012, with a time of 13.12 seconds, a Jamaican record at the time. Parchment was third in the Jamaican Olympic Trials in June 2021, qualifying for the 2020 Games with a time of 13.18 seconds. In the 110-meter hurdles final at the Tokyo Olympics, he won the first-place gold medal by clocking 13.04 seconds over the distance. In 2023, Parchment won the 110-meter hurdles silver medal at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. He also took home silver several years before at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, China. Parchment won a silver medal at the 2023 Jamaican National Championship with a season’s best time of 13.07 seconds. In 2018, he took home a silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and a gold medal at the NACAC Championships in Toronto. He took first place at the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen in 2011 with a then-personal best of 13.24 seconds. His personal best time of 12.94 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles was achieved in Areva in 2014.

About Hansle Parchment

Parchment was born in June 1990 and is a native of St. Thomas. He attended Morant Bay High School and graduated from the University of the West Indies in Kingston. His athletic career began at Morant Bay when he joined the school’s track and field team in the second form. After high school, he had planned to leave Jamaica to pursue his academic and track careers overseas, but he changed his mind when he received a full scholarship to the University of the West Indies. He graduated with a degree in psychology from the university’s Mona campus in 2017. In 2015, he participated as a runway model during Caribbean Fashion Week. With his victory at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, he became the oldest gold medal winner in the 110-meter hurdles event in history. In 2021 he was named Jamaica’s Sportsman of the Year.
