Softleigh ended the tournament with 135 runs from five innings, with a top score of 63, for the most runs in the tournament while Christian Seenauth of F.E Pollard took seven wickets.
F.E Pollard reached the final after they defeated St. Pius in the virtual knockout match by three runs, managing to defend 55-2 from their eight overs.
The top three teams were decided after matches on Saturday at the Everest Cricket Club.
Ten schools participated in the inaugural tournament, and according to the Managing Director of FL Sport, John Ramsingh, the tournament was fascinating and created a platform for talent development.
Similarly, ExxonMobil Guyana Community Relations Advisor, Ryan Hoppie, applauded the organizers for a well-run tournament and charged the participants to keep playing the sport and find a balance between academics and sport.
Stella Maris Primary and the Amazon Warriors will head into the match unbeaten.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Saturday met with farmers from Cane Grove, Mahaica to discuss how the government can assist with expanding agricultural production in the area.
The meeting was held at the Virginia Primary School and saw attendance from all categories of farmers as well as representatives from the Neighborhood Democratic Council (NDC) and the Water Users’ Association.
Many farmers who attended the meeting raised concerns over the way resources are distributed among farmers. The minister was told that only a selected few benefit from resources and inputs that should be distributed to all farmers in the area.
It was further disclosed that the persons who benefited from a recent distribution were registered and that those inputs were collected based on the number of persons who registered.
After listening to the farmers’ concerns, Minister Mustapha said that it is the government’s intention to ensure every farmer benefits from the resources available, adding that it is easier to know what is needed if farmers are registered.
Minister Mustapha said that there were many internal conflicts among the farmers are urged them to work together so that the agriculture sector in Cane Grove can develop. He told the farmers that the country has seen tremendous growth over the last six months and credited the investments made by the government to those successes.
“If we want this community to develop, we have to cooperate. Agriculture is one of the main activities in this area. Only today, H.E. President Irfaan Ali spoke about the growth in the country over the last six months. From January to June, the country grew by almost 59.5%. In the non-oil sector, we had almost 13% growth. Agriculture is contributing to that growth. The investment we’ve been making has contributed to that.
“We’ll continue to make those allocations because we want the country to be food secure. We have to change the way we are doing things so I will ensure our extension arm works along with you to empower you to produce more. I want all the farmers to register with the ministry so we know what resources are needed and how many farmers need inputs to improve their production.,” he explained.
Minister Mustapha also said that farmers will continue to benefit from inputs to support their production. He noted that services like artificial insemination as well as access to quality breeding stock will also be made available to farmers from Cane Grove.He also told farmers who requested drainage works to be done, that the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority will work along with the Water Users Association to have the blocked canals cleared and maintained.
“Rest assured, we will continue to work along with you. I just said that for the livestock farmers, we can assist with AI, breeding animals, and poultry. I can make a commitment here that each swine farmer in Cane Grove will receive a pair of swine to increase their flock. Likewise, we can work with the cash crop farmers to make better planting materials available. We are also working to see how we can get access to cheaper inputs like fertilizers and chemicals. As it relates to markets, we have the New GMC and we can work with you to get markets for your produce with better prices. I want to make a commitment; that we will work with the most vulnerable set in the community to start the Black Giant programme. For those canals that need cleaning, I’ll ask the NDIA to work along with the Water Users. Those persons in Cane Grove who have machines will be given small contracts to clean those canals then awards will be given to continue manual cleaning. The three pumps that you spoke about, I just spoke to the REO and told him to ensure the pumps are operable,” the minister added.
The minister also told farmers that the government has embarked on new areas of production as part of its efforts to lower the food import bill and ensure Guyana remains food secure. He encouraged them to explore producing new crops that attract high market value both locally and regionally.
“We are trying to expand on the traditional crops, but at the same time, we are embarking on new things. In two years from now, Guyana will produce all the corn and soya needed for the livestock sector. Every year, we usually import US$60 million worth of corn and soya. Now, we are planting corn and soya in the Tacama Savannah. We build silos there with the capacity to store 9,000 tons. We did the road and we are in the process of constructing a wharf. We started cultivating high-valued crops and are now supplying the hospitality industry. These are areas that you have to get involved in,” Minister Mustapha said.
Teams from the ministry are expected to return to the area in the coming week to continue farmers’ registration and verification exercises as well as to assess the clogged canals so that drainage works can commence.

Harry, the other survivor suffered a fractured leg.
Ramjawan, who has a one-month-old daughter, said he was returning home after working in Georgetown for the entire week and joined the car at the Berbice Car Park and so did the girl and her father (the Rudders).
“Whilst coming down the Mahaicony road it got a dark area and we see a black thing coming and when we do spot it we see is a car he just thing and try to swerve in the corner but it was too late.
“The lil girl get smash up and she father die,” Ramjawan recalled.
Meanwhile, Jones’ mother, Colleta Gomes, is urging drivers to be cognizant of the seriousness of the roadways. She told reporters that Jones who is a father of one, was a safe driver but she has seen socialmedia posts that suggest the other driver was drinking alcohol before he got behind the wheel.
“I think that when they’re driving they’re not to drink because when you drink and you drive you don’t even feel like you flying but you just moving so I want to tell all the drivers out there to be careful and don’t drink and drive but he [Jones] wasn’t drinking at the time,” the woman said.
She added that Jones “was a very nice person, loving person and he always give everybody a bright smile on his face.”
The accident joins numerous fatal accidents reported in the last two weeks. Police Headquarters has since launched an exercise using technology to curb road carnage and the increase in road deaths caused by reckless driving using frequent.
Police are investigating the death of Toorandat Girdharry, who lived at the No. 60 Village, Corentyne, after he was found lying in a hammock covered in blood.
According to a statement from Police Headquarters, Girdharry, 58, was discovered at about 14:45 hrs Sunday and the person who found him immediately contacted the No. 51 Village Police Station.
Police went to the crime scene, where they observed the body lying in a reclined position in a hammock that was tied under an abandoned building. The man’s head, arms, and back was covered in what appeared to be blood.
Upon examining the man, a small wound was seen on the right side of his head.
Police reported that the man’s relative told investigators that Girdharry was an alcoholic who usually consumed alcohol under the abandoned building with friends. It was also reported that the man occasionally slept in the hammock.
The body is at Anthony’s Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
A man was shot and killed on Sunday morning at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.
The man has so far been identified as “Shawnie.”
Police Headquarters reported that at about 07:30 hrs Sunday, loud explosions that sounded like gunshots were heard at Third Street, Mon Repos. Moments later, Shawnie was seen running out of the yard. Soon after, he fell on the street in front of a two-storey wooden and concrete building.
Another individual, who is believed be Shawnie’s attacker, was seen exiting the yard he (Shawnie) ran out of.
Soon after, the Police were summoned. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) also arrived at the scene and they pronounced Shawnie dead. Gunshot wounds were seen on his lower back.
The man’s body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home pending a post-Morten examination.
There were over 10,000 speeding violations in the last three months and the Police Force has moved to release the names of 100 persons with the fastest speeding rate as it moves to take strict action against reckless road users.
In an effort to curb the increase in road deaths caused by reckless driving, the Guyana Police Force has embarked on this new initiative, which will see more frequent and robust traffic enforcement exercises across Guyana. There will be zero tolerance for traffic offenders, and more persons will be placed before the courts once they break the Traffic Laws.

Meanwhile, President Ali noted that there are some signs of better fortunes in the gold sector.
“We have seen a marked improvement in the last 30 days, but that is an ongoing conversation that will be supported by various consultations, and investigations that we are doing in the entire sector so that we can have a firm understanding and take the necessary policy, make the necessary policy intervention that would see the continued growth and expansion of this industry,” Dr. Ali said.
The Finance Ministry’s report noted that improvements were indeed observed in the third quarter of the year and it is believed that those improvements coupled with “strengthened efforts by the regulatory authorities” are expected to help the sector rebound.
And it is projected that the sector will expand by 5.3 per cent overall this year. The report acknowledges that gold prices are higher than usual currently.
