Two brothers arrested after beating Mahaica fisherman with cutlasses
16 sugar workers among 20 persons charged for unlawful acts during protest
Twenty persons, including 16 sugar workers, were arrested in Berbice and charged on Tuesday with several offences, ranging from obstruction of traffic to unlawful assembly, malicious damage to property, and terrorism.
Those charged are:

- Fizal Kowlessar, a 28-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 34 East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice
- Roopnarine Sukha, a 46-year-old Cane Harvester of East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice
- Lance Bostswain, a 35-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 8 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
- Mohan Premchand, a 37-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 33 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
- Joseph Mc Pherson, a 49-year-old Cane Harvester of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice
- Narinedatt Khemraj, a 52-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 156 East Canje, Berbice.
- Satesh Jagnarine, a 52-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 122 East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice
- Marlon Durant, a 51-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 27 Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice
- Dennis Kippy, a 37-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 56 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice
- Shawn Bess, a 29-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 108 Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice
- Nigel Gangadin, a 27-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 26 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
- Damon Jagnarine, a 56-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 110 East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice
- Khemraj Balkarran, a 27-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 890 East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice
- Waquar Baksh, a 31-year-old Labourer of Lot 12 Reliance Settlement, East Canje, Berbice
- Bhojnarine Ramkisson, a 38-year-old Labourer of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
- Satesh Sanichara, a 44-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 10 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
- Lance Boason, a 36-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 8 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
- Ratan Singh, a 24-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 18 Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice
- George Southwell, a 31-year-old Cane Harvester of Lot 1 Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice
They were all arrested on Monday.
Those charged for malicious damage to property were placed on $ 20,000 bail each and for act of terrorism, they were all placed on $30,000 bail each.
Those charged were represented by Attorneys-at-Law Khemraj Ramjattan, Roysdale Forde, Darren Wade and Charlyn Artiga.
They appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate R. Singh.
They all pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the summary charge and were not required to plea for the Indictable charges.
The matter was adjourned to October 16, 2023 for report.
West Central Mall set for Sept 30 opening

After about two years of construction and fine-tuning, the family-owned venture will be opened on September 30. Ahead of that opening, General Manager Sandra Bipta told the News Room that the mall will be a “one-stop-shop” that caters to the entire family.
“The businesses are very diverse in the mall.
“You like pets? We cater to you. We have every service you think of, whether insurance or travelling.
“We believe that we will be catering to the needs of the people in this region,” Bipta said during an interview on Tuesday.

According to her, the mall is about 90 per cent complete and will be completed by September month end. General cleaning and “touching up here and there” is all that is left to be done, Bipta said.
As with any mall, there are several other attractions and services. A new food court and dozens of stories make the place a one-stop-shop for people on the ‘West Side’.
And one of the Director’s Bhabita Sookraj emphasised that this development fits right into the ongoing development of Region Three.

The region, which will soon be the home of Guyana’s first gas-to-energy plant, is experiencing rapid transformation. At Leonora, a new housing scheme is being developed by the region. Just next to the mall is a new, privately-owned hospital.
And Sookraj said the mall will provide the entertainment and services people need, while creating jobs for people of the region.
“… We are creating jobs, parttime and fulltime, indirect and direct employment. We estimate to have approximately 300 to 400 jobs within the mall in collaboration with all 50+ tenants,” she told the News Room.
Sookraj also emphasised that the tenants included established businesses and persons from the region who are now getting into entrepreneurial ventures.
Ahead of the grand opening on September 30, several other businesses and attractions will have their individual openings.
