Grammy award-winning, international artist Shaggy brought the crowd to its feet as he touched Rampage, Saxon and the Notting Hill Carnival Trust Horniman’s stage. His performance, which includes a mixed medley of his greatest hits, is being described by many as one of the highlights of the annual festival.

A Full Circle Experience

In a candid interview after his performance, Shaggy said, ““It’s been a great day. Me and Kes hitting the road, Notting Hill Carnival massive! It’s nice to come back to the roots. We went to Rampage and Horniman, which had thousands of people out there; great energy. The legendary Saxon sound system was a highlight for me because I grew up on that sound system, so it was good to touch that, the crowd was amazing. Big up Musclehead. Great vibes! We were In The Mood, and it’s been a lovely day.”

In addition to taking the stage at Carnival, Shaggy appeared on TV and radio.

A Reggae-Pop Icon

The most popular and commercially successful reggae performer since the late great Bob Marley, Shaggy’s birth name has long receded into the backdrop but the reggae rhythms of his native Jamaica still ring clearly in his chart-topping tunes such as “Oh Carolina”, “Angel” and “It Wasn’t Me”. In July 2023, he was honored at the  Jamaica Independence Gala New York  for being an International Cultural Icon in Reggae Music and Philanthropy.

Old time Jamaican people would say, – ‘every hoe ‘av him stick a bush’. This means there is someone out there for everybody. When a Jamaican is in love with you, it’s possible that you will be given a special nickname. And the nickname you’re given is a good indicator of the level of affection and adoration your Jamaican lover has for you.

Putus –  Affection level – medium 

If you’re a “putus”, your love has stood the test of time and it is handled with a gentle sweetness.

Z’addy – Affection level – high

Not originally Jamaican but popularly used just the same. This nickname is usually assigned to a man who a Jamaican woman finds very attractive.

Mumma – Affection level – high

This is a lusty affection and deep attraction. You might hear “Mumma! Yuh look good!”

Mumz – Affection level – high

When you get to the point where you lover refers to you as mumz in your relationship, you know you have weathered the storm and he has the utmost respect for you. You probably share a child together or its in the books.

Sweets – Affection level – low 

A unisex nickname, very casual love.

Empress – Affection level – high 

Originally a term used by Rastafarians, but now used by Jamaican men when referring to a woman they hold in high regard. In most cases, the real “wifey”.

Sugar plum – Affection level – high

When a Jamaican starts telling people that you are “sugar plum”, you have your Jamaican lover’s heart in a bag.

Babes – Affection level – low to medium

While it is a common name mostly used in relationships, it can also be casually used with friends.

Mi Woman – Affection level – high

A Jamaican man in a serious relationship often refer to his partner as “mi woman”.

Mi Man – Affection level – high

Similar to “mi woman”, this term used by Jamaican women in serious relationships to refer to their male partners.

Wife- Affection level – high

This term of endearment stand as a testament to the depth and uniqueness of love. It is more than just a word; it is a windows into your Jamaican lover’s heart.

If you are dating  a Jamaican, try using a few of these nicknames and observe how your lover reacts.  I wish you ‘a bagga blushings’ -a lot of blushes.

Jamaican-born football player Khadija Shaw has cemented her place in history as the highest-scoring player ever in a single season. This accomplishment not only speaks volumes about Shaw’s capabilities but has confirmed her spot in the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) Team of the Year.

Shaw was named alongside her  Manchester City women’s football club members Alex Greenwood and Yui Hasegawa, Manchester United’s Mary Earps and Maya Le Tissier, Chelsea’s Guro Reiten and Sam Kerr, Rafaelle Souza (Orlando Pride), Frida Maanum (Arsenal), Rachel Daly( Aston Villa), and Ona Batlle (FC Barcelona Femení).

A Milestone for Manchester City Women’s Team

Shaw’s journey from her hometown of Spanish Town, Jamaica, to becoming the top scorer for Manchester City Women’s Team has been noteworthy. Her rise commenced when she made her senior national team debut for Jamaica at the age of fourteen. This early exposure laid the foundation for her football career.

A Journey of Dedication and Accomplishment

Khadija Shaw’s path to success included stints at Eastern Florida State College and the University of Tennessee, where she gained recognition, including Offensive Player of the Year honours. In 2019, she made the leap to professional football, signing with Bordeaux Women’s Football Team in France’s Division 1 Feminine.

A Remarkable Start at Manchester City

Upon joining Manchester City in 2021, Shaw’s impact was immediate. She achieved a hat-trick in an FA Cup match and ended the season as one of the top scorers in the FA Women’s League Cup. However, her most significant achievement came with her 31 goals across all competitions this season, securing her place as Manchester City Women’s all-time highest scorer in a single season.

Shaw was recently included in the PFA WSL Team of the Year—an honour that underscores her significant contributions to the league. Looking ahead, she has reaffirmed her commitment to Manchester City by extending her contract until 2026, expressing her belief in the team’s potential.
