Saint Lucia Kings returned from opening day defeat to get their tournament underway with a 54-run victory over the Barbados Royals in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The Kings won the toss and opted to bat first, and they filled their boots with a barnstorming innings that saw them post the highest total of the season thus far with a fantastic 201/6.

Healthy contributions from all members of the batting order negated a brilliant spell of bowling from Jason Holder.

They ensured the Royals would have to produce something exceptional to win.

The Royals failed to get going in their reply, losing five wickets in the PowerPlay to end the chase.

Still, a spirited 48 from Nyeem Young ensured the Royals added some late respectability to proceedings.

Earlier on, the Kings had posted 201/6, led by a blistering show by the opening pair of Johnson Charles and Faf Du Plessis, the Kings raced to 61, but two wickets in Jason Holder’s first over brought things back. Charles and Shadrack Descarte quickly fell to give the Royals something to work with.

However, that joy proved short-lived as first Sean Williams and Du Plessis, then Williams and Sikandar Raza made light work of the Royals’ bowling to put the Kings into a commanding position heading into the final five overs.

But that platform failed to be fully exploited as Qais Ahmad and Jason Holder pulled the momentum back by dismissing Williams and Raza respectively.

Holder was to finish the match with 4/38, adding Roston Chase to his list of scalps but the lack of consistent support elsewhere ensured the Kings could still post an imposing total for the Royals to chase.

202 to win was always a tall order for the Royals to chase, but the reply was over before it began.

Following a run out for Rahkeem Cornwall, Matthew Forde was the destructor in chief, removing the Royals’ top order to leave the innings in trouble at 21/4.

Kyle Mayers briefly threatened to counterattack before Alzarri Joseph had him caught on the third-man boundary for 16.

From there, the Kings took the game away with wickets falling at regular intervals to dismiss the Royals for 147 to chalk up their first win of the tournament. (CPLT20)

fatally shot during a brawl over a West Ruimvedlt, Georgetown property and was remanded to prison.

LaRose of Kuru Kururu, Linden Soesdyke Highway, appeared before Chief Magistrate (ag), Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

It is alleged that on August 10, while in the company of others, LaRose murdered Horsham. He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison. The case was adjourned to September 7, 2023.

The News Room understands that LaRose was among the group of six men, one of whom allegedly opened fire, fatally wounding Horsham.

One of Horsham’s relative, Corwyne Abraham, a 38-year-old taxi driver from Charlestown, was also injured during the incident which occurred at around 16:50 hrs at Lot 430 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

Police Commander, Simon McBean told the News Room that LaRose was charged since there was sufficient evidence linking him to the crime. McBean said as the investigation continues, Police are pursuing several other suspects in relation to the crime.

Among those wanted is Majesty Anthony Fernandes.

Information revealed that Fernandes has been in the United States (US) since June. And in providing clarification, the Guyana Police Force said he is wanted in relation to the murder since he is the owner of the silver Chevy Silverado Pickup, GLL 7950 that was allegedly used in the crime.

signed an agreement for the establishment of an oil refinery here, Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo says there are no immediate plans to build a second facility.

“We are still exploring one refinery but we have several interests,” Dr Jagdeo told reporters during a press conference at the Arthur Chung Conference Center on Thursday.

In January this year, it was announced that nine proposals were submitted to the government for the design, financing and construction of a local oil refinery at Crab Island, Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne).

The Vice President acknowledged those proposals and noted that the first round of evaluation is complete; the government is now awaiting more information.

During a recent State visit to the Dominican Republic, President Dr. Irfaan Ali and his counterpart, President Luis Abinader, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of an oil refinery in Guyana that could possibly refine at least 50,000 barrels of oil daily.

With this new venture, it was noted that the Dominican Republic will be the majority shareholder, with a 51 per cent stake.

Meanwhile, Dr Jagdeo on Thursday noted that “A number of other countries are sending in proposals… If it goes forward, it has to be on conditions that are good for the country and meet financial and technical requirements.”

He added, “We don’t have the capacity for two refineries now.”

He noted, however, that while this is being reviewed, the government is simultaneously looking at storage and strategic reserves.

“With Trinidad, there were some discussions but if we are doing a refinery, it will be here because it defeats the purpose to have the refining done in Trinidad.”

The Vice President emphasised that one of the reasons the government wanted a refinery was to ensure national energy security.

“We are exploring what it would take to toll some of our crude and what fee we have to pay for tolling it and bringing back refined products and storing them.

“That might, from initial numbers, it could not only guarantee national energy security but also significantly allow for cheaper cost of energy,” the Vice President reasoned.

The Attorney General said these centres are being constructed so that improved services can be provided to be most in need.

“It’s a pilot project that we are doing in Region Four on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), in Region Three and Region One and once the pilot is successfully executed, it will be replicated across all the administrative regions across the country,” Nandlall said on Wednesday when the new Vigilance Magistrates’ Court was commissioned.

These facilities, he said, will be aptly named ‘Hope and Justice’ centres.

Aside from the construction of these new facilities, the Attorney General said the government is supporting the construction of new courts across the country.

New laws are also being crafted to ensure that there is adequate legislative support for vulnerable persons. He reminded the gathering that a new Family Violence Bill is being developed to replace the Domestic Violence Act.

Nandlall also said the 1893 Evidence Act requires an overhaul and the government will pursue this too.

Acknowledging the lack of specialised health services available at more far-flung areas, Minister Anthony said it is his hope that eye care will be the next focal point.

Most public specialised services are accessible at the hospitals which are based in towns rather than individual villages.  Using the dental clinic and similar centres, persons don’t have to travel far from their homes to get health services.

“We are constantly trying to expand the range of services that we could offer, dentistry is one of those, but we also at some point would like to get more ophthalmology services as well

“We should have a couple on the east coast so that people could have access to these things,” Minister Anthony said.

The minister also reminded that the Enmore Hospital and pediatric and maternity hospital, soon to be constructed at Ogle, will add to the range of services offered on the East Coast.

Similar to the Diabetic clinic at Lusignan, the Health Minister said this facility will be a public awareness hub providing persons with information needed to prevent dental problems.

“We hope that we could do more prevention rather than extraction. Hopefully one of the things we will be able to offer here is patient education so with that maybe we can get people doing the right things,” Minister Anthony added.

The government has placed massive focus on healthcare and along with the new hospitals to be constructed, four other new hospitals are part of the government’s plan to improve healthcare across the country.
