Elisha’s servant could not believe his eyes as he stepped out that morning. The city of Dothan, where he and his master were staying, was surrounded by soldiers from the army of Ben-Hadad, king of Syria, and he knew they had come for Elisha (see 2 Kings 6:8-17). Filled with fear and trepidation, he ran to the man of God and exclaimed, “Oh, master! What shall we do?” (2 Kings 6:15, The Message). In other words, “How are we going to get out of this? We are surrounded; there is much more of them than they are of us. They are armed and we are not! Even if we were, we stand no chance against them. We are doomed!”
Elisha listened intently. Unmoved by the report, he answered, “Don’t worry about it–there are more on our side than on their side” (v. 16). One could excuse the servant if he thought, “What? Don’t you get it? There’s an army out there!” However, he did not get a chance to say a word as according to the narrative, “Then Elisha prayed, ‘O GOD, open his eyes and let him see.’” Before the young man could even think “MY eyes?” the verse continues, “the eyes of the young man were opened and he saw. A wonder! The whole mountainside full of horses and chariots of fire surrounding Elisha!” (v. 17).
What does all of that have to do with us? One important principle we take away is that there are eyes that look and there are eyes that see (perceive, discern). The JFB Commentary on this portion of the text notes, “The opening of the eyes, which Elisha prayed for, were those of the Spirit, not of the body – the eye of faith sees the reality of the divine presence and protection where all is vacancy or darkness to the ordinary eye.” When we look, it is easy to be intimidated by what is happening around us; we experience times when the pressure gets to us and it feels like there are more of those against us than there are for us. Like the servant, it is difficult to see past what we are looking at. At a time when he thought they were all alone, two against an army, he was unaware of what the psalmist David would later declare: “The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear Him, and delivereth them” (Psalm 34:7, KJV). He was on the winning side and he did not know it.
Years after this incident, when other enemies threatened the prophet Nehemiah and the Israelites, Nehemiah told the people, “Our God will fight for us!” (Nehemiah 4:20). Or, as the apostle Paul puts it, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). What shall we do? We do not have to be intimidated when we feel or are surrounded and overwhelmed. It is worth remembering that as Christians we are not fighting for victory but from a position of victory. Read that sentence again and get it into your spirit. Because of Christ’s victory, we are also victorious, and as long as we are in the will of God, He will indeed “fight for us” and that puts us on the winning side. Every time. He has never lost a battle and He won’t lose yours or mine.

Habitat for Humanity of Broward has been approved to receive $540,000 in State funding by Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis on 1 July when the State budget went into effect. This is the first time that Habitat Broward has received this type of extremely competitive funding. Habitat Broward is one of three Habitat for Humanity affiliates that received funding from the State this year.
Affordable Homeownership in Broward County
The State appropriation will be used to help launch ‘BBI Village” in Fort Lauderdale, an affordable housing community. The funds benefit hard-working families in need of a decent, affordable place to live in Broward County.
“We thank Representative Chip LaMarca and Senator Rosalind Osgood for advocating on Habitat Broward’s behalf for this unprecedented funding and we thank the State for recognizing the impact of affordable homeownership on the community,” said Nancy Robin, Habitat Broward’s CEO and Executive Director. “Now we will be able to expand affordable housing in Broward County with the BBI Village coming to Fort Lauderdale.”

“Habitat Broward has always been near and dear to my heart. Habitat teaches an important lesson in life and that is to invest in yourself and your family. Each one of the families that we invest our time with, also invest hundreds of hours themselves into the building of their home. This appropriation for BBI Village was a labor of love, and I am honored and proud to say we got the appropriation fully funded. South Florida is the nation’s most cost-burdened housing market in the nation with high home prices and low wages making homeownership out of reach for 94 percent of Broward residents. Habitat Broward’s program combines home construction with affordable mortgage financing and robust education to put working families on the path to long-term financial security through homeownership.
BBI Village has also received generous financial support from BBI (Burdette Beckmann Inc.), City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County Florida.

The Government has outlined an ambitious programme of development aimed at transforming Guyana and delivering improved quality of life to all Guyanese, which will require new financing including through additional external and domestic debt.
Against this backdrop, the Government of Guyana moves to adjust the debt ceilings as its development agenda accelerates. In line with the Government’s commitment to maintaining its sterling track record of transparent and prudent debt management, the increase in the debt ceilings aims to avert the dependency on utilising the Consolidated Fund overdraft as a means of financing, which was done under the APNU/AFC administration. Earlier today, the Honourable Dr. Ashni Singh, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, tabled two orders in Parliament proposing adjustments to the two ceilings. It was proposed that the domestic public debt ceiling be increased to $750 billion, up from $500 billion from its last revision. Meanwhile, a new external borrowing ceiling of $900 billion was proposed, after its last increase to $650 billion.
Given Guyana’s economic outlook, these revisions to the external and domestic public debt ceilings do not threaten Guyana’s long-term debt sustainability. Noteworthy, for more than one and a half decades Guyana has maintained a robust debt sustainability position. This favourable outcome was due to the PPP/C’s administration’s strong debt management abilities. This administration focuses on debt management policies and practices that hinge on a strategy that prioritises mobilising development financing at the lowest cost, within prudent risk parameters.
Guyana’s history serves as a testimony of this administration’s ability of achieving and maintaining sustainable debt levels. When this Government took office in 1992, Guyana was one of the world’s most heavily indebted countries, however, after several rounds of successful debt relief initiatives coupled with the Government’s continuous efforts to strengthen the domestic economy, Guyana’s debt became sustainable in 2006. Over the last three decades, Guyana’s debt has declined from 617 percent of GDP (more than six times the economy) at end-1991, to a remarkable 24.6 percent (about a quarter of the economy) at end-2022. Additionally, when this Government took office in 1992, about 90 cents of every dollar of revenue earned was used to make debt service payments, today this has been significantly reduced to 7 cents of every dollar.
Fuelled by a ramping up of oil production and the resurgence of the non-oil economy, Guyana registered real GDP growth of 62.3 percent in 2022, making it the fastest-growing economy in the world. This appreciable growth performance and the country’s robust economic outlook underpin Guyana’s sustainable absorption of the new debt.
In sum, the Government is committed to harnessing Guyana’s debt-carrying capacity to accelerate
its development agenda. Notwithstanding this administration endeavours to continue its sterling track record of prudent debt management, to safeguard Guyana’s long-term fiscal integrity and debt sustainability.
