Les autorités ne croisent pas les bras en attendant l’arrivée d’une force internationale, a expliqué hier la ministre de la justice et de la sécurité publique, Mme Emilie Prophète Milcé.
Des directives sont passées aux forces de l’ordre pour rétablir la paix par tous les moyens, a dit la ministre également alarmée par une recrudescence des cas de kidnapping.
Mme Milcé croit que le peuple ne se laissera pas faire. Elle réitère son appel à la vigilance qui doit se concrétiser par des dénonciations. La dénonciation est un devoir civique, lance Maître Milcé pour qui la collaboration police population doit s’intensifier.
Elle soutient que le gouvernement ne saurait être bénéficiaire des actes de terreur sur la population. La police n’est pas dans un attentisme, elle oeuvre pour rétablir la paix.
La police a obtenu des victoires dans la lutte face aux gangs qui disposent d’armes de gros calibre, ajoute t-elle.
La ministre fait remarquer que les policiers n’ont pas été formés pour faire face à une guérilla urbaine. La police est entrain de se transformer afin de faire face à ces nouveaux défis, conclut-elle.

La vie a repris dans le vaste bidonville de Cité Soleil grâce à la trêve entre les gangs. De nombreux résidents des quartiers de Brooklyn ont pu rendre visite à leurs amis dans les autres quartiers tels Boston et Belekou.
L’ex Maire de Cité Soleil, M. Ésaïe Bauchard, est optimiste et plaide pour que la trêve soit transformée en paix durable.
À son avis il y a une prise de conscience des bandits qui ont pris l’initiative de faire la paix. Ils ont compris qu’ils sont également victimes de cette guerre.
M. Bauchard confirme que des membres des élites politique et économique financent les gangs. Des armes et munitions sont vendues d’autres sont données pour perpétuer le chaos. Il soutient que plus de 10 millions de gourdes de munitions sont utilisées par jour en période de guerre.
Pour consolider la paix à Cité Soleil l’état doit arrêter les financeurs des gangs, lance M. Bauchard confiant de la volonté réelle des jeunes armés de faire la paix.
À son avis ces jeunes sont des victimes sociaux qui doivent bénéficier d’un programme de désarmement et réinsertion.
Pour que cette paix ne soit pas éphémère les autorités doivent rendre accessibles les services sociaux de base. Une assistance humanitaire est indispensable pour les habitants meurtris de ce bidonville.

Le président du conseil d’administration de Digicel Haïti, M. Marteen Boute, assure que la compagnie maintiendra le cap dans les investissements sur le réseau et dans les activités sociales en dépit de l’entrée de trois fonds d’investissement américain dans le capital de la compagnie.
Digicel n’entend réaliser aucun changement notable dans sa stratégie, argue t-il.
Les Fonds ont changé leur prêts de 1.7 milliards de dollars en action, révèle M. Boute précisant que les dettes du Group Digicel ont été ramené à 3 milliards de dollars.
Cette opération est bénéfique pour la compagnie qui pourra ainsi continuer à investir dans les réseaux de téléphonie.
Digicel Haiti n’a pas réalisé des profits au cours de la dernière année fiscale.
L’instabilité, liée à la crise socio politique, est la principale cause de l’absence de rentabilité.
Les nouveaux actionnaires de Digicel Group, présent dans 25 pays de la caraïbe, parient sur une croissance dans la région et le retour de la stabilité en Haïti.
M. Boute explique que les prochains investissements sur le réseau permettront d’améliorer la couverture Internet notamment dans la région métropolitaine de Port-au-Prince.
Digicel poursuivra ses opérations dans les trois secteurs de la téléphonie mobile, de l’internet fixe et du service financier.

Le barreau de Port-au-Prince déplore que les tribunaux ne disposent pas de locaux et que les juges n’aient pas de bureaux, ce qui, combiné aux nombreux problèmes sociaux du pays, a conduit à un dysfonctionnement quasi total de la justice. Afin de discuter de ces problèmes et d’explorer des solutions, le barreau de l’ordre des avocats de Port-au-Prince organisera une foire du livre, de la gastronomie et de la culture le 14 juillet prochain.
L’objectif principal de cette réunion est de rassembler tous les avocats du barreau de Port-au-Prince afin de faire face à la nécessité de redresser la situation. Cet événement, qui réunira des avocats, des justiciables et d’autres membres de la population, vise à trouver des solutions aux maux qui affligent le système judiciaire, souligne Me Nathalie Wakam Cyprien. De plus, cette foire sera l’occasion pour les avocats, en grande majorité, de vendre leurs œuvres écrites, afin de mettre en valeur d’autres aspects de leurs compétences dans un contexte où la profession est pratiquement au chômage technique. « Vendre des livres devient leur principale activité pour pallier les dysfonctionnements des tribunaux », a souligné Me Nathalie Wakam Cyprien, conseillère de l’ordre des avocats de Port-au-Prince.
Para ailleurs, les assassinats de Me Monferrier Dorval et Me Magloire Aspil, ainsi que l’enlèvement de Me Jean Ernest Chéry, Me Manette Dejervil et Me Ikenson Edumé, sont quelques exemples parmi tant d’autres montrant que les professionnels du droit sont victimes de l’insécurité. Cette situation a des conséquences néfastes sur la qualité de leur travail, déplore Me Nathalie Wakam Cyprien. Elle constate un nivellement par le bas au sein de sa profession, où l’insécurité est le principal facteur perturbateur. Cependant, il existe également d’autres problèmes internes qui doivent être résolus afin de restaurer la réputation de l’ensemble du système judiciaire.
Cette activité, prévue pour le 14 juillet prochain, est un moyen pour le Barreau de Port-au-Prince de rassembler ses membres avocats afin de les sensibiliser à l’importance de réfléchir à des solutions visant à favoriser le bon fonctionnement de la justice haïtienne. Lorsqu’elle est inefficace, les justiciables sont laissés à eux-mêmes pour régler leurs différends, ouvrant ainsi la voie à la criminalité, souligne l’avocate haïtienne d’origine camerounaise.

Jamaican female sprinter Shericka Jackson currently holds world leading times in both the 100m and 200m following her incredible sprinting showcase at the 2023 Jamaica National Junior & Senior Track and Field Championships.
Jackson, however, didn’t always excel in track and field. In her childhood, she considered herself a slow runner, and during school sports days, she struggled to even come close to the top three positions. Her speed was often compared to that of a turtle.

A lifechanging decision
Everything changed in her final year of high school when young Jackson made a serious commitment to track and field. She decided to give it her all and work hard to improve. This was when she found inspiration from her remarkable coach, who believed in her abilities and pushed her to achieve her full potential.
Sprint double star
Fast forward to the present day, and Shericka Jackson has become an incredible sprinting sensation. She recently showcased her exceptional skills by completing a remarkable sprint double. In the 200 meters, she delivered an outstanding performance, clocking a season’s best time of 21.71 seconds (-0.5m/s), securing a well-deserved victory. This impressive achievement followed her exceptional personal best time of 10.65 seconds in the 100 meters.
Building a Profile
Jackson began her athletic career as a speedy 400-meter sprinter, and her talent quickly caught the attention of the athletics world. At the Rio Olympics in 2016, she secured a bronze medal in the 400 meters, showcasing her potential on the global stage. Not content with just one medal, Jackson added to her accolades by winning silver, gold, and bronze in the 4×400-meter relay. Her prowess as a relay runner further established her as a force to be reckoned with.
Transitioning to Shorter Sprints
In 2021, under the guidance of her coach, Stephen Francis, Jackson decided to focus on shorter sprints. The resort town of Ocho Rios, in the parish of St. Ann, is set to become the first destination in Jamaica to provide free, public Wi-Fi. This initiative is part of a larger project undertaken by the Universal Service Fund (USF), an agency with a mission to enhance access to information and communication tools across Jamaica.
Initiative still in early stage
CEO of USF, Daniel Dawes, revealed that the agency’s ambitious plan aims to offer complimentary Wi-Fi in all resort towns in Jamaica. While the implementation timeline is yet to be determined, Dawes emphasized the importance of careful planning and resource allocation for the project’s success, as it is expected to require significant financial investment.
The Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) will bear the cost of the Wi-Fi service, while the USF will oversee its implementation. Alongside Ocho Rios, the initiative aims to include other popular destinations such as Negril, Port Antonio, and Montego Bay. The specifics of the project, including its cost and detailed plans, are still being developed.
Plan developers want “smart destination”
Currently, discussions primarily revolve around Ocho Rios, with a pilot plan already underway for the town’s main street and promenade in St. Ann. The goal is to transform these bustling areas into “smart destinations” that offer seamless Wi-Fi access to both visitors and residents. This connectivity will enable individuals to share real-time information and experiences, enhancing the overall tourist experience in Ocho Rios.
The TEF, established in 2005, plays a crucial role in the development and sustainability of Jamaica’s tourism sector. Its primary objectives align with the goals set forth in the 2002 Master Plan for Sustainable Tourist Development, which include promoting growth, better environmental management, and enhancing the overall tourist experience.
As the USF and TEF work together to realize this groundbreaking project, the people of Ocho Rios can look forward to enjoying the benefits of free, public Wi-Fi, marking a significant milestone in the town’s technological advancement. With this step, Ocho Rios is poised to attract even more visitors and cement its status as a premier resort town in Jamaica.

(Loop News) Trinidad and Tobago has its first confirmed case of Monkeypox (Mpox) virus.
The Ministry of Health advised that the patient is a middle aged male with travel related history. He was tested earlier today and the sample was then sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency’s (CARPHA) laboratory via the Trinidad Public Health Lab.
The Ministry said the relevant County Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) has initiated the local public health response, which includes contact tracing.
According to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) update (as at July 4, 2023) 88,144 Mpox cases have been detected globally amongst 112 countries and there has been a total of 149 deaths.
The Ministry reminded the public that the Mpox virus continues to circulate worldwide.
The virus can range from mild disease to severe illness and is spread through close contact or through respiratory droplets.
Common signs and symptoms may include a skin rash or mucosal lesions which can last 2–4 weeks accompanied by fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. Anyone experiencing these symptoms is advised to visit their nearest health facility.
The Ministry reminded the public to maintain good hygiene practices such as hand washing or sanitising where appropriate.
The Mpox vaccine is available in Trinidad and Tobago, but at this time, it would be used for contacts of known positive cases only.
