Reggae Icon Buju Banton is set to release his 14th studio album “Born For Greatness” on 8 September 2023. The album will be available through Gargamel Music, Roc Nation Records and Def Jam Recordings.
Chronicling The Gargamel’s Musical Journey
Buju Banton shared his excitement about the album, saying, “Another milestone, Another stage. I embrace it all. I’ve accepted the change. Here is something special. From my experience and musical journey. An ode to those who acknowledge the struggles and challenges that surmount. And others who will, your eyes are not deceiving you nor are your ears, you were born for greatness. I embrace you with love melodies and music.”
17 Tracks of Vibes
“Born For Greatness” features 17 new tracks from Buju Banton. The album takes listeners on a journey through various vibes, starting with the cinematic opener “Ageless Time” and concluding with the triumphant finale, “Let My People Go.” Along the way, Buju collaborates with talented artists such as Victoria Monét on the sultry “Body Touching Body” and Stephen Marley on the emotionally charged “Feel A Way.”
As a teaser, Buju recently dropped the infectious dancehall anthem “Coconut Wata (Sip).” Vibe magazine described it as “powered by a breezy backdrop” and praised Buju for urging listeners to let go of life’s troubles and enjoy the moment. Rap Radar called it “fresh” and acknowledged Buju’s ability to inspire resilience during difficult times.
“Coconut Wata (Sip)” followed the global hit “High Life” featuring Snoop Dogg. The track received recognition from HYPEBEAST, TMZ, REVOLT, and more. HotNewHipHop declared it a perfect combination of Buju and Snoop Dogg’s styles, while Rolling Stone simply described it as “bumping.”
From ‘Steppa’ to ‘Born For Greatness
Buju Banton’s previous album, “Upside Down 2020,” released in 2020, received critical acclaim, earning a Grammy nomination for “Best Reggae Album.” The Guardian and Rolling Stone both praised the album, giving it “4-out-of-5 star” reviews.
In January 2023, Buju performed alongside Beres Hammond at Grizzly’s Plantation Cove in Jamaica, marking the first time these Reggae stars headlined a concert together on the island. This followed his memorable return to the stage with the historic Long Walk to Freedom Concert at Kingston’s National Stadium.

That’s the burning question on everyone’s minds as the announcement of the ticket prices for his ‘Under The Influence’ concert at the National Stadium in Kingston on 27 August has stirred astonishment among scores of Jamaicans.
Ticket Prices
A graphic listing the concert ticket prices was shared online on Friday and it caused quite a stir. Fans can either purchase tickets at the early bird or pre-sold prices, which may indicate that no tickets will be sold at the event. The lofty pre-sold ticket price of Jamaican $1.5 million (US $10,000) grants access to the sky view suite, the most fans could expect to pay see Chris Brown perform live in Jamaica. The show also offers cabana suites at $750,000 (US $5,000). Yet, it is the jaw-dropping Jamaican $1.5 million price tag that has captured the attention of Jamaicans on Instagram, Twitter and Tik Tok. Ticket sales for the concert will commence on 18 July with early bird tickets ranging from Jamaican $6, 750 (US $45) for Bleachers to the staggering $1.5 million (US $10, 000) for the Sky View suite.
Party Loans
One Jamaican micro-financing company, E-Loan Microfinancing announced loans of $1.5 million with a four-year repayment term for fans who want to attend the concert. The company gained attention in 2022 when it announced loans for the Burna Boy concert. It’s suite of party loan packages for 2023 also include loans to attend Reggae Sumfest and Dream Weekend.
Concert Line Up
Dancehall artists Dexta Daps, Teejay, and Ding Dong and Jamaican-American singer Sean Kingston will grace the stage at the concert. This will be Chris Brown’s first time performing since 2010 when he performed at Reggae Sumfest. The concert is part of the BZR WKND (Bizarre Weekend) to be held in Kingston from 25 August – 27 August.

A so far unidentified man died on Monday after he was allegedly struck by a limb that broke off of a tree while he was working at 42 Miles Backdam, North West District (NWD), Region One.
The man is of Amerindian descent.
The incident occurred around 08:30hrs.
Police Headquarters said the dead man was employed with a dredge operation owned by Diane David, a 34-year-old businesswoman, who was in the process of establishing a mining operation at 42 Miles Backdam, NWD.
Inquiries, the Police said, revealed that the dead man and another man, who has been identified as Dwayne Fredericks were clearing an area to set up a camp when a limb broke off from a tree and struck the dead man to his chest.
Fredericks told the Police that the dead man was immediately placed into a car and taken to the Port Kaituma District Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Police were informed and the dead man’s body was examined. There were abrasions to his chest area.
The dead man’s body is at the Port Kaituma Hospital mortuary awaiting identification and a post-mortem examination.

A total of 20 children– 19 girls and one five-year-old boy- lost their lives after the tragedy. Several others were injured with one 13-year-old girl still receiving care abroad. It was reported that the fire was started by a young student, but safety concerns about the dormitory have been raised.
Importantly, these funds being offered supplement other initiatives taken to provide relief to the families.
The Attorney General’s Chambers on Monday issued a press release on the situation.

From the beginning, the Government made it abundantly clear that it will offer every type of assistance possible and necessary to support the victims and families of the tragic Mahdia Dormitory Fire.
Thus far, medical treatment has been offered both locally and overseas, all transportation to and from Region 8 to Georgetown and accommodation in Georgetown were provided, all funeral and related expenses have been paid, and all personal items destroyed in the fire have been purchased and delivered. Psychosocial assistance, including counselling, has also been provided.
The Government pledges to continue to offer support and assistance in various ways to enable the families to continue to cope with, and recover from, this horrendous tragedy. In this regard, many family members requested cash which they could use to make purchases that would enhance their ability to continue to provide for their families.
In response to these requests, Government offered each family financial assistance, and the families were requested to sign an agreement having received independent legal advice. The process of providing this financial assistance is ongoing. In the Agreement itself, Government pledged to continue to offer such support as may be necessary to the victims and their families. Given that public monies are being expended, and recognising that these expenditures will have to be transparently accounted for, the agreements were reduced into writing. Thus far, all the affected families engaged have signed agreements.
Needless to say, a full report of all monies expended in respect of this tragedy will be made public in due course, as the process is a continuing one.
The Commission of Inquiry (COI) as promised by His Excellency the President will be established, and that Commission of Inquiry will, if it considers necessary, review all the facts and circumstances relating to the event, in accordance with its Terms of Reference.
The Government’s pledge to continue to offer assistance to the victims and their families in no way affects the mandate of this intended COI, as is, unfortunately, being peddled in some quarters. The Government hopes that the wishes and welfare of the victims of this tragedy are neither exploited nor politicised, and expects that this issue will be accorded the solemnity and dignity which it rightly deserves.
Kim Near, a 42-year-old medical student of ‘C’ Field Sophia, Georgetown was seriously injured by his neigbhour on Sunday during a confrontation at about 22:06hrs.
Police said the attacker has a constant habit of tying his horse in front of the Near’s residence. On Sunday, he was seen tying his horse in front of Near’s home.
He (Near) told his neighbour that he should desist from such, and this made him annoyed which led to a confrontation between the two men.
Near suffered injuries to his left-side chest and head by the suspect who later made good his escape in an unknown direction.
Police said Near was later taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where doctors admitted him as a patient in critical condition.
Checks were made for the suspect at his residence, but he was not located.
Police are continuing to make checks for him as investigations continue.
