    La Caricom reprend la main dans le dossier d’Haïti

    Les dirigeants de la Caricom annoncent la tenue d’une réunion spéciale en vue de trouver un accord sur la crise haïtienne.
    Trois anciens Premier Ministres de la région ont la charge de faciliter le dialogue entre les protagonistes de la crise.

    Plus d’une trentaine d’acteurs ont été conviés à ce rassemblement des 11 et 12 juin 2023 à Kingston (Jamaïque). Parmi les personalités invités figurent des officiels et des représentants d’accord. Entre autres le Premier Ministre M. Ariel Henry, la présidente du HCT, Mme Myrlande Manigat, André Michel représentant de l’accord du 21 décembre, Ted Syndic, représentants de Montana, Emmanuel Menard du Compromis Historique.

    Des dirigeants de partis politiques, d’organismes de défense des droits humains, de la société civile, du secteur des affaires et du secteur religieux sont également invités.
    Parmi les dirigeants politiques Evaliere Beauplan (Solid), Maryse Narcisse (Fanmi Lavalas ), Jerry Tardieu (En Avant), Sorel Jacinthe (Inite), Edgard Leblanc (OPL), Lyné Balthazar (PHTK), Renois (Unir), Claude Joseph (EDE), Anacacis Jean Hector (Lapeh), Jean André Victor (Moppod) et Moïse Jean Charles (Pitit Dessalines).

    Des représentants du secteur universitaire, du secteur paysan seront également présents.

    Les trois thèmes prioritaires sont la gouvernance, la sécurité et les élections.

    La Jamaïque fait office de manière implicite de parrain de ce dialogue inter Haïtien. Le chef du gouvernement jamaicain avait eu récemment une séance de travail avec des officiels canadiens.

    Le NOAA prévoit une saison cyclonique relativement normale cette année

    La direction générale de la Protection civile (DGPC) et le Système National de Gestion des Risques de Désastre (SNGRD) annoncent dans un communiqué, l’ouverture de la saison cyclonique 2023 à partir du 1er juin, qui se terminera le 30 novembre de cette année.

    Pour cette année, le Centre de Prédiction Climatologique du Service Météorologique National de l’agence américaine de surveillance océanique et atmosphérique (NOAA) prévoit une saison cyclonique relativement normale. Comparée aux années précédentes, cette saison devrait être moins active en raison de plusieurs facteurs, notamment le retour du phénomène climatique El Niño dans la zone Atlantique. Avec ce phénomène, le développement des tempêtes pourrait suivre une trajectoire descendante en raison de sa capacité à affaiblir les activités cycloniques. Cependant, la manifestation d’El Niño va provoquer des vagues de chaleur qui augmenteront la température de l’air ambiant.

    Néanmoins, le nombre de systèmes à surveiller entre le 1er juin et le 30 novembre 2023 diminue relativement, passant de 12 à 17 tempêtes nommées, dont 5 à 9 pourraient se transformer en ouragans, dont 1 à 4 pourraient être majeurs. Cela laisse penser que malgré les prévisions rassurantes de la NOAA, les phénomènes hydrométéorologiques cycloniques seront toujours en formation et pourront se manifester à tout moment dans la zone nord de l’Atlantique, notamment dans la caraïbe.

    Alors que le pays fait face à une situation socio-politique difficile, le Système National de Gestion des Risques se prépare à affronter cette saison cyclonique. Cette période de l’année suscite à la fois une certaine inquiétude dans les communautés les plus vulnérables et une mobilisation du SNGRD pour renforcer la préparation, promouvoir la solidarité et la résilience face aux événements naturels imminents.

    À travers diverses activités déjà réalisées et d’autres en cours, la protection civile et ses partenaires nationaux et internationaux travaillent en collaboration avec les communautés locales afin de multiplier les actions d’information et de sensibilisation aux multiples risques pouvant affecter les communautés les plus exposées.

    La saison cyclonique concerne les autorités et les organismes de secours, mais également chaque membre de la communauté. Il est donc important pour la protection civile que chacun soit conscient des risques potentiels et des mesures à prendre pour se protéger, ainsi que pour protéger sa famille en cas d’urgence. C’est pourquoi la protection civile s’est attelée à réaliser des exercices de simulation, de formation et de renforcement des structures locales à travers tout le pays

    À l’ouverture de la saison cyclonique 2023, la Protection Civile encourage tous les acteurs du système et les partenaires qui œuvrent dans la gestion des risques à continuer de renforcer leurs capacités en matière de préparation, d’information et d’intervention dans ce contexte de manifestation de multiples aléas.

    La DGPC demande à toute la population de rester informée des dernières prévisions météorologiques et de suivre les consignes des autorités locales afin de réagir de manière appropriée en cas de manifestation éventuelle d’un cyclone ou de tout autre risque naturel pouvant constituer un enjeu majeur pour leur sécurité.

    L.U.S.T. Dazzled with Impressive Melody and Harmony

    It has been often said that reggae music centers around melodies and vibes, and with that in mind the reggae singing group, L.U.S.T., captures both of these elements especially when considering the group’s collective and individual vocal and harmonizing abilities.  As far as the acronym L.U.S.T. is concerned, the letters stand for Love, Understanding, Sensitivity and Trust.  Formed in 1997, the group consists of group members Lukie D, Thriller U, Singing Melody, and Tony Curtis aka L.U.S.T.

    ‘Love Doctor’ Romain Virgo Delighted Audience With His Musical Therapy

    A lovers rock reggae specialist, Romain Virgo has certainly come into his own over the past decade.  And even before hitting the biggest stages around the world, Romain was a rising star—literally.   Virgo was victorious in 2007 when he was only 17 years old at the popular Digicel Rising Stars competition in Jamaica, and was the youngest contestant to ever win that top prize.

    London-Born Jamaican Designer Martine Rose Is New Creative Director At Clarks

    Martine Rose, a designer based in London, has been named by the British shoemaker, Clarks, as the first guest creative director in the company’s history. Taking on her newly established role on May 23, 2023, Rose designed three pairs of shoes. Each design will make its debut during London Men’s Fashion Week in June.

    According to Rose, the Clarks brand is “intrinsic” to the cultures of both England and Jamaica because of the Commonwealth. She believes Clarks and some other English brands are popular in Jamaica because “Britishness is a sign of quality.” Taking it out of context turns it into a myth, she added.

    Clarks Approached Rose In 2022

    The footwear firm approached designed Rose in 2022, and she made a visit to its headquarters in Somerset in England to learn more about the brand’s 200-year history. After spending time in the company archives, Rose put her unique stamp on classic Clarks, including the loafer, Oxford shoe, and sandal, with her characteristic emphasis on comfort.

    Rose Expands Clarks Iconic “Stylized Comfort”

    According to a report from Women’s Wear Daily, Rose has gone beyond Clarks basic focus on “stylized comfort” by adding extra-padded insoles and feather downs to her collaborative design in a process Clarks had not previously investigated. The colors she chose are particular to her vision and include black, oxblood, and snakeskin options. Rose acknowledged that the design had to remain somewhat familiar in order to “get the riff” and that efforts were made to keep things more classic.

    Clarks Excited About Rose

    The chief marketing and digital officer for Clarks, Tara McRae, stated that the company was very excited to have Rose on board. She was at the top of Clarks’ list of guest creative directors because of her unique approach to design and development, McRae said, adding that Rose’s British-Jamaican background made her the perfect choice as both Britain and Jamaica are core elements of the brand.

    Rose Designs Slated For Sale In 2024

    While Rose’s first designs for Clarks will debut on the runway in June 2023, the footwear will not be available for purchase until March 2024. Rose has left some hints that there could be a second collaboration in the summer of 2023, however, so fashion watchers are keeping an eye on what comes next for Rose.

    Mahdia tragedy: 11 girls laid to rest in Micobie

    horrific fire at the female dormitory of the Mahdia Secondary School in Region Eight (Potaro- Siparuni), 11 girls were laid to rest in Micobie.

    They are: Natalie Bellarmine, Andrea Roberts, Lorita Williams, Nickleen Robinson, Sherlyn Bellarmine, Lisa Robert, Cleoma Simon, Tracil Thomas, Delecia Edwards, Arianna Edwards and Sherana Daniels.

    And these girls were the last set of children who perished in the recent fire to be buried.

    On Thursday, their families gathered alongside other residents of Micobie and other Region Eight communities for a large funeral for the 11 girls.

    Most people squeezed into a village benab where white and brown coffins housing the girls were situated; others lingered around the benab, providing whatever support they could.

    At the funeral, a few relatives fought back tears and reflected on fond memories with the girls.

    “While Delesia was mostly reserved, Ariana was considered the life of any room she entered.

    “…These girls had dreams and aspirations. They were determined to study and become somebody significant. Delesia had aspirations to become a nurse and Ariana, a teacher,” Lucia Charles, a relative, said.

    Alton Prince, another relative of some of the girls laid to rest, also shared fond memories of them even as he struggled to hold back tears. He expressed hope that the girls were all finally at peace.

    President Dr. Irfaan Ali also joined the families in their time of mourning, promising that his government would support them for as long as was needed.

    “We hear your cries, your pain, and your sorrows,” Dr. Ali said.

    Later adding, “We are going to ensure that these girls and our little boy that their life is marked with a legacy of positive change in these communities.”

    He also asked members of the community to provide similar support to the families affected by the great tragedy. In fact, he pleaded with them to “uplift the families” in their time of grief. (Vishani Ragobeer)

    They hailed the establishment of a Dominican Republic Embassy in Georgetown and the accreditation of the resident Ambassador, HE Ernesto Torres Pereyra as a tangible step in relations which will augur well for enhanced cooperation and facilitate opportunities for further engagement in the advancement of the bilateral agenda between Guyana and the Dominican Republic.

    President Ali welcomed the keen interest of the private sector from the Dominican Republic in Guyana. Both Presidents recognised the important contribution which the private sectors of the two countries could make in advancing this agenda and encouraged increased collaboration and partnership between businesses of Guyana and the Dominican Republic including increased investments by companies from both countries.

    In this regard, they looked forward to the early commencement of commercial flights by Skycana which would provide the opportunity for increased tourism and greater ease of travel in and out of Guyana.

    The Presidents also discussed issues of mutual interest and concern on the regional, hemispheric and multilateral agendas and undertook to strengthen their resolve to collectively work on advocating in the interest of Small Island Developing States to address challenges including food security, energy security and the impact of climate change.

    They expressed concerns over the great risks posed to their economies by sargassum and agreed to work together to find measures to mitigate the impact.

    They reiterated the rule of law, protection of sovereignty and territorial integrity, respect for democracy, the promotion of human rights and sustainable development of their countries as paramount pillars for the maintenance of peace and security in the region.

    They noted each other’s post-Covid economic recovery efforts and underscored the value of continued engagement and advocacy at the international level for an enabling environment to facilitate the sustainable development of their countries.

    In reviewing the political situation in the Republic of Haiti, the Presidents agreed that Haiti is an important member of the Caribbean family of nations. They, therefore, welcomed the establishment of the CARICOM Eminent Persons Group on Haiti to be supported by a technical team. They pledged the full support of their Governments towards the achievement of political stability in Haiti.

    The two Presidents lauded the efforts of their Ministries of Foreign Affairs in the conclusion of three bilateral Agreements and witnessed their signing.

    • Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic.
    • Air Services Agreement between the Government of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Government of the Dominican Republic.
    • Memorandum of Understanding on Energy Cooperation between the Government of Guyana and the Government of the Dominican Republic.

    Further, the two Presidents agreed to establish a high-level working group to advance and monitor the various areas identified for cooperation.

    President Ali committed to paying a reciprocal visit to the Dominican Republic by the end of June 2023.

    Karasabai fire: Four students confess to planning, setting fire

    St. Angela Girls’ Hostel in Karasabai Village, Region Nine, Police Headquarters confirmed.

    The fire started sometime between 02:30 hrs and 03:00 hrs on Thursday.

    According to the official Police report, the boys planned to set the building on fire after they were chased from the premises by the caretaker. The News Room understands that the boys were reportedly told to stop coming to the hostel to “trouble” the girls.

    The Police Force said some 19 students between the ages of 11 and 16 occupied the building and managed to escape unharmed.

    The suspects are in custody assisting with further investigations.

    According to one of the Sisters who manages the hostel, threats were reportedly made on Wednesday to set the building on fire. Additionally, villagers claimed that when the fire first started, they saw some boys riding away from the hostel.

    The Sister, who was speaking during a meeting with government officials led by Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, on Thursday, applauded residents for their efforts in extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading to the hostel’s store room and library.

    Several days ago, the female dormitory of the Mahdia Secondary School was gutted by fire. A total of 20 children, 19 girls, and one boy, died after that fire.

    The hostel was constructed by the Catholic Church to ease the burden of students staying with guardians in the village.

    Odel is known to the Police Force. He was previously charged with the May 1, 2015 murder of Sophia shopkeeper, Shawn Anys. However, in 2020, he was acquitted of the murder.

    He was also charged with trafficking in narcotics.

    Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum on Thursday afternoon confirmed that Williams and his accomplice, Roberts were shot and killed by ranks of the Joint Services during a “confrontation” at 33 Miles Bartica, Potaro.

    Williams called ‘Smallie’, in a daring daylight ordeal and assisted by men with high-powered weapons, escaped from the Mazaruni Prison on May 19. This is the country’s maximum security penitentiary.

    A day later, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) announced a $10 million reward for any information that can lead to Williams’ arrest. Just a week ago, six persons were remanded to prison after they were charged with aiding Williams to escape from the penitentiary.
