‘Even my country didn’t invest that much on me’: Russell’s explosive revelation

IPL: David goes 6, 6, 6 in final over to trump Jaiswal’s stunning hundred
The wickets began to tumble around Jaiswal, with no other batsman scoring higher than Buttler’s 18, yet he powered his way to a century off just 53 balls to help the Royals to a strong total of 212/7.
The run chase started poorly as captain Rohit Sharma could not mark breaking the Indians’ all-time IPL appearance record with a suitably memorable innings, dismissed for just three in the second over of his 190th match for Mumbai.
But Suryakumar Yadav gave the Indians a chance of pulling off the win with his 55 off 29 balls, and though he fell in the 16th, David finished the job with an epic final over, nailing three consecutive maximums to clinch a first win in three for Mumbai.

Jaiswal century in vain
Jaiswal’s brilliant 124 is the highest score in this season’s IPL and is the joint-most ever recorded by a Rajasthan batsman (also Buttler v Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2021).
The 21-year-old smashed eight sixes and 16 fours on his way to the highest IPL score by an uncapped Indian batter, yet he still ended up on the losing side.
Mumbai win despite Rohit’s birthday struggles
Danger man Rohit turned 36 the day of the game, also moving above Kieron Pollard on the Indians’ IPL appearance list, with only Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni playing more games for a single team.
He had his team-mates to thank for being able to mark his special day with a win, though, as Mumbai overcame their captain’s low score with Cameron Green, Suryakumar and David all getting scores of 40+, the latter making 45 off just 14 deliveries to secure the victory. (SportsMax)

The Guyana Police Force identified the dead man as Wafad Wahab, called Ricky, a 45-year-old Handyman (cart-pusher at Stabroek market) of Harlem, West Coast Demerara.
The incident occurred at about 18:50 hrs in the vicinity of Strikey’s Bar and was reportedly committed by three males.
A statement from Police Headquarters noted that Wahab went to visit his aunt, Kumarie, but when she saw that he was under the influence of alcohol, she reportedly told him that she did not like seeing him in that condition.

Seven Tips for developing community-based programmes – The Fushun Road Community Model

The Fushun Community Center was officially launched in November 2019, and it has been running for more than three years. Officials said that the services at the centre were designed “based on the actual demands of our communities, to ensure resident’s satisfaction and well-being”.
Here are seven tips for developing social programs based on the Fushun Road Community Center Model:
- Focus on Inter-generational Learning: Design programs that facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills between diverse age groups to foster mutual learning and respect.
- Provide Opportunities for Creativity and Innovation: Create spaces that encourage creativity and innovation while providing systematic learning opportunities.
- Emphasize Community Governance and Management: Introduce programs that facilitate residents’ participation in community decision-making, shared responsibility, accountability and overall management of resources.
- Provide Accessible Community Services: Integrate community services across all districts (zones) to provide accessible resources, especially for those living within a 15-minute walk.
- Encourage Volunteerism and Expertise Sharing: Encourage residents to share their expertise and participate in community services as volunteers. This is also a great opportunity for young professionals to develop their capabilities and understanding of the world around them.
- Promote Active and Healthy Lifestyles: Provide programs that promote active and healthy lifestyles for seniors, children and people of all ages.
- Invest in Lifelong Learning: Fund programs and initiatives that promote lifelong learning to create spaces where people of all ages can come together to learn, grow and thrive, thus creating healthy and vibrant communities. This will support the notion that ‘it’s never too late’ or ‘ it’s never too soon’ to learn something new.

While the Fushun Road Community Centre was designed to meet the needs of residents in terms of culture and entertainment, it also provides a platform for various social institutions, such as universities and volunteer teams, to carry out activities that will reap mutual benefits both to the members of the Fushun community and the institutions.
Officials have confirmed that integrated community services, which are vital for community spaces, have been implemented across all districts. The significance of these spaces for learning cannot be overstated.
During my visit, I noticed that many senior citizens were taking advantage of the resources in the library while others were enjoying quality time with their grandchildren in the playrooms. Some were also engaged in tai chi, dance and fabric art.

Community representatives stated that “more and more residents like to come here to study, relax or participate in activities. Many of them also use their expertise and participate in community services as volunteers.”
The benefits that can be derived from such community learning spaces are many. Firstly, they provide a safe and controlled environment for children to learn valuable life skills, allowing them to develop their unique talents and abilities. Secondly, for senior citizens, these centres are a place to stay active and socialise, maintaining a sense of purpose and connection to the wider community.

Ultimately, the success of Fushun Road Community Center can be attributed to the local government’s focus on investing in the health and education of its citizens. By funding programs and initiatives that promote lifelong learning, the local government has created a space where people of all ages can come together to learn, grow, and thrive. This is a model that other countries would do well to emulate, as it promotes healthy and vibrant communities that can improve the lives of all citizens.

Schoonord to Crane four-lane highway to be ready by year-end – President Ali
As Guyana hurdles towards massive expansion and development, President Dr Irfaan Ali has assured that Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) will also benefit tremendously from the advancements.
To this end, he said that the $11.8 billion Schoonord to Crane four-lane highway will be completed before the end of the year.
President Ali made the disclosure on Saturday during his remarks at the opening of Sheriff Hospital, the first private hospital in the region. The four-lane road project, which had an expected completion date of June 2024, will feature an emergency lane, medians, roundabouts, reinforced concrete culverts, and pre-stressed bridges to alleviate traffic congestion along the West Bank and West Coast of Demerara.

A new roundabout will also connect the West Coast Demerara Highway to the new Schoonord to Crane Highway. Further, the project is expected to open avenues for improvement in economic activities.
The Head of State said, “We will deliver, long before the end of this year, the new four-lane highway from Schoonord to Crane in record-breaking time. While all of that is going on, more than $25 billion is being expended on the housing sector. Housing, health and education are integrated in such a way that there must be a seamless development if we are to have sustainable development in these three areas.”
He added that, from the government and the private sector, more than US$1 billion has been invested in Region Three. Highlighting the gamut of investments being made in the region, the head of state noted that some $200 billion in ongoing works are being conducted in the region, as the government continues to mould the region, and by extension, the country, to become a hub for investment.
“This government is delivering better education, better housing, better infrastructure, better health, a better country, not for People’s Progressive Party Civic supporters, not for any particular group, but for all the people of Guyana,” he reassured those gathered. (DPI)
