    Stonebwoy Says Jamaican Patois Similar to Twi Language

    Ghanaian Afropop, dancehall, and reggae musician. Stonebwoy, has noted the similarities between Twi, the language that is most widely spoken in Ghana, and Jamaica’s patois. In conversation at the New York studios of Hot97 FM in the United States, Stonebwoy, whose flexibility in Jamaican patois in part fueled his rise in popularity in the global music scene, also emphasized the Ghanaian origins in Jamaican culture.

    Twi is spoken in the southern and central parts of Ghana by 17 million to 18 million people in the country. The Akan people, who represent the largest ethnic group among the 17 major groups in Ghana, are the chief speakers of Twi. Approximately 80 percent of Ghana’s population speaks Twi as their first or second language. Twi originated in the 13th century when the Akan people moved into the forest and coasts in the southern part of Ghana. In the 19th century, the British colonized Ghana and introduced English, which many Akans learned. The British had problems pronouncing Twi words, however, and some of their mispronunciations became accepted as the correct form of some Twi words. The Twi language spread to South America and the Caribbean as a result of the slave trade. Escaped enslaved people and their descendants continued to use the language. It is still spoken today in Jamaica and Suriname. Some of the best-known Twi works in these countries are the Anansi stories. There was no written Twi language until 1978 when the Akan Orthography Committee established orthography for the Akans and collected some 20,000 words.

    Stonebwoy

    Stonebwoy was born Livingstone Etse Satekla in 1988 in Ashairman, Ghana. He is the CEO of the Burniton Music Group and the winner of the “Best International Act: Africa” award at the 2015 BET Awards and Artist of the Year at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards. He also received two Billboard plaques and is known as the king of reggae and dancehall in Africa

    He is in the process of making his fifth studio album and is teasing his fans with mentions of what will be included. He said it will feature some “heavy names” and indicated that is likely to drop the album in the US. He did reveal that reggae recording artist Shaggy makes an appearance on the album, also naming Angelique Kidjo and Dexta Daps as collaborators. The album features Maporisa as well, one of the most popular artists and deejays from South Africa.

    Stonebwoy wants the end product to be “organic” and not forced, and he told fans to “rest assured” that there is “some beautiful stuff” on the album. The project will feature Amapiano and reggae sounds. Amapiano is the most popular music style from South Africa at the moment, and his recordings are merging those sounds with Afrobeats. He then adds some dancehall notes and his own style.

    A man nabbed with imported marijuana has been fined $5.4 million and jailed for five years.

    The marijuana that was seized

    Andy Jainandan appeared before his worship Magistrate Mr. Dylon Bess in Georgetown Magistrate Court and pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for trafficking, the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) reported.

     

    CANU intercepted Jainandan on Saturday last. He was carrying 12 lbs (5.36 kgs) of the  imported cannabis worth G$1.8 million.

    Construction worker remanded to prison for killing Canje man

    Trevor Rajmangal, a construction worker of West Canfield, East Canje Berbice, on Monday appeared via Zoom before Magistrate Sherdel Isaac- Marcus to answer to the charge of murder.

    The charge read that between March 18-19, 2023 he murdered Mohamed Imran Ali.

    He was not required to plea to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until April 21, 2023. Rajmangal was represented by Attorney-at-law Chandra Sohan.

    Imran Ali called “Mice” was found dead on the parapet in front an old house at Bissessar Street, West Canefield, East Canje Berbice on Sunday 19th March 2023.

    His sister, Fazila Ali, had told Police that she had last seen her brother on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at approximately 20:00 hrs. The following day, at around 06:00 hrs, she was informed by a neighbour that her brother was sleeping at the corner of the road.

    When she checked, he was not moving and appeared to be dead.

    The Police were contacted and when they arrived he was seen lying with his face downwards. He was clad in a long blue pants and a black jersey on his shoulder. Blood was seen oozing from his right eyes.

    A post-mortem examination gave his cause of death as shock with cerebral haemorrhage due to a fractured skull.

    Rajmangal was subsequently arrested.

    Suspect arrested for murder of Port Kaituma porknocker

    Police have arrested the 17-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of  21-year-old porknocker Shimron Benjamin, who was found with his face bashed in on Tuesday morning.

    Police Headquarters confirmed that the suspect was arrested around 08:10hrs by ranks of the Port Kaituma Police station.

    He is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.

    The lifeless body of Benjamin, of Quarry Top, Port Kaituma, North West District (NWD) was found in the grass with blood on his head about 30 feet from his home.

    The murder occurred at Four Miles Village, Port Kaituma.

    Police had reported that Benjamin was last seen imbibing high wine with the suspect and they both appeared intoxicated.

    Benjamin’s body was discovered by a farmer, who immediately informed the village Toshao.

    He was taken to the Port Kaituma District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

    His body is at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

    Police found a piece of rock with a reddish substance, suspected to be blood, at the scene.

    Police are on the hunt for a teenager who allegedly murdered his 21-year-old drinking buddy at Port Kaituma early Tuesday morning.

    Dead is Shimron Benjamin of Quarry Top, Port Kaituma, North West District (NWD).

    Police Headquarters confirmed that they are investigating the alleged murder which occurred at Four Miles Village, Port Kaituma.

    The 17-year-old suspect has not yet been located, they said.

    According to a Police report, enquiries revealed that Benjamin was last seen imbibing high wine with the suspect.

    They both appeared intoxicated.

    Minutes after, Benjamin’s lifeless body was found in the grass with blood on his head about 30 feet from his home.

    His face was bashed in, Police said.

    Upon making the discovery, the Police noted that the farmer immediately informed the village Toshao who took Benjamin to Port Kaituma District Hospital on his ATV.

    Benjamin was pronounced dead on arrival to the hsopital.

    His body is at the Port Kaituma District Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

    Similar sentiments were expressed by Minister within the Public Works ministry, Deodat Indar, who added that government’s aggressive policy-driven approach to development and heavy investments are seeing hordes of people coming into Guyana.

    Minister Indar noted, “Guyanese should be proud that what we have now is an environment that can bring more aircraft from different destinations. For an investment decision to fly the Guyana route, it took some amount of doing, some amount of calculation, and some amount of confidence in Guyana, and I am hoping that other airways follow suit as British Airways did to fly this route.”

    This further enhances the country’s connectivity to the Caribbean and the rest of the world.

    Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond said that the introduction of the flights presents a myriad of opportunities for Guyana, including those for additional partnerships.

    She said, “Connecting the world to Guyana remains a priority of this government. We see Guyana as an active part  of a global travel network, and we are continually engaging major airlines with a view to encouraging them to serve this destination. Our pursuit of airline connectivity is part of a wider strategic economic objective to make Guyana easily and affordably accessible to all business in all sectors, including the leisure and pleasure travel sector.”

    The direct flights are prefaced by the visa-free travel to the United Kingdom, announced late last year. This move to further strengthen government-to-government and people-to-people relations allows for Guyanese to visit the UK for up to 180 days or six months without the requirement of a visitor’s visa.

    Indian High Commissioner, K.J Srinivasa, United Kingdom Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth, & Development Office, David Rutley, Chairman of the CJIA board, Sanjeev Datadin, and CEO, Ramesh Ghir were also in attendance.

    Dominican Republic Airline SkyCana on exploratory visit to Guyana

    Executives of Dominican Republic carrier SkyCana are in talks with aviation and government officials in Guyana as the airline explores the possibility of serving this route.

    Should the airline fly to Guyana it will most likely be from Texas and Canada through the Dominican Republic, for refuelling purposes.

    Chief Executive Officer of SkyCana Frank Diaz on Monday led a team of officials to Guyana and met with Chief Executive Officer of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Ramesh Ghir, the Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill and Chairman of the CJIA Board Sanjeev Datadin.

    “We are here to collaborate with Guyana and bring more operation… We can supply any needs that you have here in the country,” Diaz said.

    Guyanese authorities welcomed the interest which will be explored in the weeks and months ahead to determine feasibility.

    “We all know that in Guyana at present. We are in need of roots out of Guyana. We are in need of more diverse roots,” Datadin said.

    SkyCana is a carrier based at Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo (SDQ). It has a fleet of ten aircraft, including two Airbus A330s, three Airbus A321s, four Airbus A320s, and one cargo turboprop. In November, Sky Cana added two Airbus A320-200s to its fleet.

    The Dominican carrier operates charter flights.

    The airline announced flights to and from New York, Puerto Rico, and Miami last December.

    Following Saturday’s opening rivalry, which saw all 12 teams competing, the quarter-finals were contested on Sunday when Soesdyke defeated Hauraruni 2-0, through goals from the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Neron Barrow Jonathan Bailey.

    Waiakabra were then pushed to the hilt to turn back the challenge of Yarrowkabra, 3-2 on kicks from the penalty mark as both regulation and extra time failed to produce any goals.

    Bamia trounced Kuru Kuru College 3-1, thanks to goals from Marcus Johnson, Jvonte Lewis and Kevin Charles. Kuru Kuru Colleges’ consolation strike came from Steven Smith.

    Swan Madewini eased into the semi-finals on account of a brace from Edson Williams, as Circuit Ville failed to score.

    Both semi-finals were decided by respective 1-0 score lines; Waiakabra’s Joshua Grant netting the winner against Bamia, with Soesdyke’s Tyrone Khan sealing his side’s place in the final, with the winner against Swan Madewini.

    Khan, along with Edson Williams of Swan Madewini and Yarrowkabra’s Terrence Glasgow, ended as the competition’s joint-leading goal scorers, with a brace each. Waiakabra’s Marlon Fernandez was adjudged the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper.

    Minister McCoy, in brief remarks following the presentation of prizes to the top individual performers and teams, thanked them all for making the tournament a resounding success. Gratitude was also extended to the hundreds of fans who turned up over the two days to cheer their teams on.

    Minister McCoy promised the communities that President Irfaan Ali and the Government of Guyana are fully committed to their development in the area of sports and would be working hand in hand with the Ministry of Sport to ensure that their needs are taken care of.
