Watchman remanded for murder of Anna Catherina fisherman
beaten and fatally stabbed at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara on Monday.
Remaldo Parris called “Romel” of Parika Sea Dam, East Bank Essequibo appeared before Magistrate Zameena Ali-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
He was not required to enter a plea when the indictable charge was read in Court and the case was adjourned to May 11, 2023.
Parris was among five suspects who were arrested by the police shortly after the murder on Monday.
However, he was the only one charged for the crime based on legal advice obtained by the police.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Police Headquarters said the five men approached Azeem, who is also called ‘Goat man’, at the Anna Catherina Sea Wall and accused him of chopping up their seine.
One of the suspects was armed with a cutlass, while another was armed with a knife, the Police said.
“An argument ensued and the suspect with the knife dealt Azeez one stab to his lower right-side chest. Azeez ran a short distance before collapsing to the ground,” the Police statement noted.
Azeez was later picked up and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy on Thursday revealed that Azeez died as a result of a perforated heart and lung due to a stab wound.
L’Etat annonce une subvention pour 100 000 transporteurs
Le gouvernement haïtien annonce avoir lancé le processus pour l’octroi de la subvention ciblée suite à la hausse des prix de l’essence. Reconnaissant que le processus a mis du temps a être concrétisé, le ministre du commerce et de l’industrie, M. Ricardin Saint Jean, a assuré que des formulaires ont été distribués aux petits entrepreneurs et aux transporteurs sur l’ensemble du territoire.
La subvention ciblée doit toucher plus de 100 000 transporteurs et 2 000 entrepreneurs.
Une carte pétrolière sera délivrée aux chauffeurs de transport en commun pour bénéficier d’une subvention sur le galon de carburant. 1.6 milliards de gourdes ont été mobilisés afin de permettre à chaque bénéficiaire d’avoir droit à une subvention de 15 000 gourdes.
Le programme doit s’échelonner sur 6 mois et toutes les communes doivent être touchées..
En ce qui a trait aux petites entreprises le ministre du commerce explique que la subvention sera supérieure à 25 000 gourdes. Les entreprises devront faire la preuve de leur présence sur le terrain depuis au moins un an et détenir des documents et la patente de l’administration publique.
Plus de 375 millions de gourdes sont allouées à ce programme qui s’étend sur 6 mois.

Un syndicaliste dénonce une mafia du secteur pétrolier
Le syndicaliste Jacques Anderson Desroches, jette un pavé dans la marre. Il qualifie de mafia une frange du secteur pétrolier à ses yeux responsable des pénuries récurrentes de carburant.
De l’avis de M. Desroches une frange importante des importateurs et des distributeurs de produits pétroliers ainsi que des commerçants réalisent d’énormes profits en raison de la vente des produits pétroliers sur le marché informel.Il rejette les arguments des importateurs relatifs aux pertes liées à la forte hausse du taux de change de la gourde par rapport au dollar. Il assure que la BRH met des millions de dollars à la disposition des importateurs. Selon M. Desroches certains acteurs réalisent des profits de l’ordre de 1000% sur la commercialisation du carburant.
Il se dit détesté par les membres de cette mafia mécontents de ces dénonciations.
Le syndicaliste recommande une action énergique de l’Etat haïtien pour défendre les citoyens. Parmi les solutions proposées figure la traçabilité des camions citernes.Les transporteurs représentent un maillon important dans la chaine du marché noir. La crise sécuritaire est bénéfique pour les acteurs de cette mafia, juge M. Desroches assurant que ces acteurs n’ont aucun intérêt à vendre le carburant dans les stations à essence.
Aux yeux de M. Desroches la descente aux enfers pour les automobilistes et transporteurs a débuté suite au départ des compagnies pétrolières étrangères. Il regrette les départs de Shell et de Texaco et plus tard de Total.
Actuellement le marché haïtien est contrôlé par 5 compagnies. Toutefois les compagnies Bandary et Dynassa détiennent plus de 78% du marché.

FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy to Be Displayed in Jamaica
Kingston and Montego Bay in Jamaica will be featured stops on a display tour of the FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy. It will be on display at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in Kingston, on April 17, 2023, and later on the same day, it will be taken on a road tour of Montego Bay, making a final stop at the Holiday Inn hotel. It will then so on to visit Canada and all the 32 participating member associations and host cities in Australia and New Zealand following its Jamaica appearance. This is the first time that a total of 32 nations will participate in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The trophy last visited Jamaica in 2019.
At each city on the tour, special guests and celebrities will participate, and women and girls will be invited to join in Skill Drills, a social media football skills contest headed by Lia Lewis, the Female Football Freestyle World Champion.
The Reggae Girlz, Jamaica’s national women’s football team, are preparing for the World Cup tournament and will meet Sheffield United in a friendly match at the King Power Stadium at Leicester City on April 10, 2023. Jamaica will meet France, Panama, and Brazil at the group-stage level in the Cup competition.
According to Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, there will be a “significant increase” in the amount of funding put toward the teams and players who participate in the Women’s World Cup in 2023. Prize money will total of $152 million, a 300-percent increase over the previous edition of the tournament. The Women’s World Cup will be co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia from July 20, 2023, to August 20, 2023.
To date, just four countries have won the trophy. The United States has won it four times and Germany has won it twice. Norway and Japan each won the trophy one time.
In 1998, Jamaica’s women’s football team qualified for the first and only time to participate in the World Cup. The team won the group stage with a 2-1 victory over Japan and finished third in the group and ranked 22nd among the tournament’s competitors.

WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL – “Great is Thy Faithfulness”
Back in 1923, when Thomas Obadiah Chisolm put pen to paper and started to write, he had no idea that over 90 years later, his poem, set to music by William M. Runyan, would continue to be sung by Christians all over the world. As one of Chisolm’s more than 1200 poems, “Great is Thy Faithfulness” stands as the standard for God’s goodness and faithfulness. Author Kenneth W. Osbeck observes, “While many hymns are born out of a particular dramatic experience, this hymn was simply the result of the author’s ‘morning by morning realization of God’s personal faithfulness.’”
According to Osbeck, Chisolm, in a 1941 letter, writes, “My income has not been large at any time due to impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me until now. Although I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and that He has given me many wonderful displays of His providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness.” What a great attitude! Amidst the challenging circumstances, he did not lose sight of what God, a covenant-keeping God, was doing in his life. We sometimes forget that our relationship with our God is a covenant and not a contract. When we fulfill our side of this ‘two-way promise,’ He can apply His infinite power and wisdom to our problems and trials. However, in our imperfection and no matter how often we fail Him, His mercies are new every morning, and His faithfulness remains unfailing (Lamentations 3:22-23).
How great is this faithfulness? Chisolm writes, “Summer and winter and springtime and harvest / Sun, moon and stars in their courses above / Join with all nature in manifold witness / To thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.” Everything speaks of this faithfulness. Why is this important? Because we can rely on it! As God has been in the Scriptures, He forever will be. Remember, He is a covenant-keeping God; with Him, there is “no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17, KJV), or as Eugene Peterson paraphrases the verse: “There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle” (The Message).
Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, God’s faithfulness is the only constant. If you take the time to count your blessings, you will find many wonderful displays of it right where you are. Are you simply lucky, or is it that God has been faithful?
