Jamaican athlete, Jaydon Hibbert, has broken the World Under-20 Championship record and the Jamaican national junior and senior record. The 18-year-old freshman Razorback at Arkansas State University accomplished the feat by jumping 17.54m in a single bound that was his first attempt, during the men’s triple jump.
The win came on the last day of the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships held in Albuquerque, NM on March 11, 2023. The jump broke the previous championship record of 17.50m set in 1986 by Charleston Southern University’s Charlie Simpkins. The jump represented a new personal best for Hibbert, who has been named 2023 SEC Freshman Field Athlete of the Year. The honor makes him the third University of Arkansas student to receive the honor since it was first presented in 2004.

The track and field standout is no stranger to greatness. He has an impressive and distinguished list of gold and silver wins, going undefeated in his event during the 2022 season. After graduating from Kingston College High School, he went on to win the 2021 World Under-20 Championships in Nairobi. In 2022, Hibbert won the senior triple jump title at the Jamaican National Championships in Kingston, going up against athletes several years his senior
Hibbert won in the long jump and triple jump at the 2022 CARIFTA Games. In a single jump, he broke the championship record at the 2022 IAAF World Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia. That jump put him in second place on the all-time under-18 list. He’ll still be young enough to compete at the 2024 World U-2 Championships where he has the potential to be the first to win back-to-back triple jump titles.
Hibbert’s natural talent and determination to excel is a tribute to his determination and his country. With his wins and meteoric rise in the rankings, Hibbert is well on his way to making more history on the field in the future.

The Hollywood Arts Park Experience series continues March 11, 2023 – a series of free festival-style concerts at the magnificent ArtsPark in downtown Hollywood, Florida – produced by the Rhythm Foundation for the City of Hollywood. The Soul Rebels started with an idea – to expand upon the pop music they loved on the radio and the New Orleans brass tradition they grew up on. In round one, Demerara thumped Essequibo by 55 runs, and the Select XI prevailed by the narrow margin of a single run against Berbice.
The third and final round will be played on Friday with Berbice facing Essequibo at GCC, and the GCB Select XI up against Demerara at Enmore. Both matches will start at 09:30h.
Born prematurely because the pregnancy was high-risk, the babies are still receiving care at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital. This was Hope’s second pregnancy but she said it was very difficult and she had to be transferred from a hospital in Region Ten to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
During an interview with the News Room on Wednesday, the young mother said she is hopeful that her babies will be discharged from the hospital soon.
“I didn’t know I was pregnant until four months and after I found out, it was hard because I was thinking of my daughter. She hasn’t reached two [years old] as yet.
“I was scared because with her and all the responsibilities but then I thought about it and I went ahead with it,” Christine said.
Further, the mother said the time spent at the hospital was not horrible because she was treated well. Pregnancy pains, however, caused her great discomfort.
“The doctor, nobody wasn’t bad; they treated me good but the pregnancy was really bad but I came through,” she proudly said.
According to Hope, she started getting abdominal pains in January and she was admitted to the Kwakwani Hospital. Subsequently, she was transferred to the Linden Hospital Complex and finally, to the Georgetown hospital.
The young woman said upon the babies’ release from the hospital, she will return to her Kwakwani home. She is currently staying with family in Georgetown so she can make hospital trips on a daily basis.
The father of her sons and her family offer her support at this time but the mother said when she returns home, a woman she calls ‘mom’ will be assisting her.
Despite the joys of motherhood, Hope said he is worried about her brother who has a disability.
Her younger brother relies heavily on her for support. Because she is currently unemployed, providing for her children and her brother has become difficult.
“It does be very hard on me but I don’t have anybody he could go by so I take up the responsibility in doing what I have to do to look after him,” Hope said.
Further, Hope explained that her brother cannot move on his own which is why she is worried about how she will balance caring for her young daughter, her triplets and her brother when she returns home.

CPGL President, Liu Xiaoxiang recounted that the management and staff of his firm were touched by the tragic fire and are delighted to be of assistance.
He highlighted that the inspiration for the donation was rooted in the traditional Chinese conviction to come to the assistance of those in need, noting that the company is committed to the promotion of education in Guyana.
In thanking the administration of the school for its cooperation in accepting the donation, Mr. Liu expressed hope that the money would help to relieve the difficult circumstances facing the students and staff.
“We hope that CPGL’s donation today will help in some small way to replace some of your losses and rehabilitate your school. We hope that you will succeed in your studies and be a part of Guyana’s bright future,” he concluded.
Chen Xilai, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of China in Guyana, identified the donation as a good example of Chinese companies making contributions to the local community.
The Deputy Chief of Mission also shared that his country welcomes talented Guyanese students to study at world-class universities in China with the CPGL President indicating the company’s intention to subsidise scholarships for students studying oil and gas.
CPGL’s contribution also came in for praise and appreciation from the Secretary of the Board of Christ Church Secondary School, Odessa Debarros; PTA President, Loknauth and the Headmistress.
“Being bowled out was a bit of a damper. (But) I think we did well to recover from 30-odd for three to get to 324 at the end of the day,” captain Johnson, who is playing his last season for Guyana, told CWI Media at the close.
After the early loss of opening pair Tevin Imlach (4) and Matthew Nandu (10) and debutant Kevlon Anderson (6), Johnson and Kemol Savory repaired the innings with a partnership of 97 before both fell within 10 runs of each other to make it 140-5.
Johnson made 62 off 99 (12x4s) and Savory 44 off 109 (4x4s).
Sinclair and Bramble then put together 79 for the sixth wicket, before Bramble was dismissed for a run-a-ball 56 (8x4s, 1×6).
Harpy Eagles’ recovery continued with a seventh wicket stand of 88 between Sinclair and Keemo Paul, who struck seven fours and a six in 39-ball 46.
The partnership ended when Sinclair fell for 69 off 96 (11x4s).
