gruesome accident on the Greenwich Park Public Road, East Bank Essequibo has succumbed, taking the death toll to five persons.

Minibus passenger Tella Parhoo, 71, died at around 15:30 hrs Friday at the Georgetown Public Hospital while undergoing medical treatment for her injuries sustained in the accident.

Parhoo’s body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Mortuary, awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.

The four others who died in Monday’s accident were: 50-year-old Vernon Prowell, the minibus driver of Bent Street, Wortmanville, and minibus passengers Margaret Kennedy, 72, of Tuschen; Olga Reddy, 57, of Parika; and Elvis Charles, 40, of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo.

The accident occurred at about 9.30 hrs on March 06, 2023, and involved a motor lorry (GZZ 2285) driven by Ewart Stewart and a minibus (BWW 8364) driven by Vernon Prowell.

Ewart Sewart, 38, was arrested on March 6 for his involvement that day in the accident and charged on Thursday with four counts of  Causing Death by Dangerous Driving.

She will need CAN$ 44,000 to pay her tuition and cover living costs. The young woman hopes her story of working as a full-time student and businesswoman will inspire other people to go after their dreams.

Lewis said her businesses were opened in February 2021 as a means of providing persons with picnic setups and photo backdrops. The full-time student has always been interested in decorating.

“The initial reason for my business was because I really wanted to work while I was going to school, however, when I applied for jobs, persons would tell me that I am overqualified.

“So, I figured why not start a business seeing that I am a full-time student,” Lewis said.

But Lewis says juggling both school and work has been challenging. She explains that sometimes her work clashes with her exams but she has lecturers who have been understanding.

She said that in achieving her dreams of owning two businesses and pursuing studies that she is passionate about, has proved that if “you are determined, you can achieve”.

Now in her last year of studies at the University of Guyana, Lewis applied to further her studies abroad.

“I saved up all that I had because I figured that applying would be so expensive and I applied but I was getting a little trouble with the university in releasing my transcript and it was literally on the last day at the last hour I got to submit my transcript and then two days later I received an email “congratulations, you got in,” she said.

To pay for her application, Lewis had to work very hard to save enough money and she still has to secure funds to cover her stay and the remainder of her tuition. She is actively reaching out to persons to support her cause. In her requests for support, she explains that her intent is to study and return to Guyana to boost the user experience on websites locally.

Lewis said she will work with companies to make their websites interactive because she said, “I feel like one of the things that we are missing in most of our websites and most of our product listing is the fact that we don’t think about how users are going to interact to it.”

Managing Director of the company, Ramesh Sunich, echoed similar sentiments, adding that it is important corporate Guyana plays its part in aiding the growth of local sport by assisting those with the platform and initiatives to do so, in this case the Guyana Fitness Games organisers.

He wished the athletes and the organisers well for the event on Sunday, adding that he anticipates a much bigger showpiece in years to come.

On Sunday, male and female athletes will compete in three categories, namely Teens, Elites and Masters.

Also present at the ceremony was Minister of Education Priya Manickchand who disclosed that in order to ensure a larger number of students perform well the ministry has entered in talks with the Saraswati Vidya Niketan school to discuss ways in which they can be a replica in the public school system.

“Even if only as an example that once the metrics line up. Good leadership, attentive students, parents who are engaged, involved or at least interested and allowing the school to engaged and involved at will, and teachers who are satisfied. When those line up how success is guaranteed,” Manickchand said.

The education minister said she is hopeful that the process can begin before the end of September at one of the public schools on the West Coast of Demerara.

“All in the interest of ensuring larger numbers of children do well. Our interest is to make sure every single child, African or Indian or Amerindian or poor or rich, male or female whether from the interior or the coastland, wherever you are, whatever circumstances you have emerged from, that every child is prepared to participate meaningfully and benefit from the Guyana that is unfolding before us,” she stated.

Seenarine, who gained 18 Grade Ones, was named the Caribbean’s most outstanding CAPE student in December 2022.
