Powerlifting Federation announces national shortlist of athletes for 2023
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) has announced its national shortlist of athletes for 2023. These athletes have ALL satisfied the criteria, which includes achieving the required totals based on the Federation’s minimum standards, published in November 2022.

Le Canada finance la Police pour combattre les gangs
C’est un électrochoc pour la Police, affirme l’ambassadeur du Canada à Port-au-Prince, M. Sébastien Carrière, se référant à l’aide financière de 100 millions de dollars à la Police Haïtienne.
Les discussions avec le chef de la Police sont en cours depuis plusieurs semaines pour identifier les matériels nécessaires, a confié le diplomate.Le Canada est déterminé à renforcer son assistance à la Police. Il s’agit de la poursuite de l’assistance technique et financière bilatérale qui dure depuis deux décennies.
Les fonds sont concentrés sur cette période de crise pour permettre à la Police de combattre les gangs qui sèment la terreur dans la région métropolitaine de Port-au-Prince.
Le diplomate canadien est confiant que ce support permettra aux forces de l’ordre de se refaire une santé.
Au cours des deux dernières semaines le gouvernement canadien a envoyé des signaux dans le sens d’une non intervention.
Le Premier Ministre canadien, M. Justin Trudeau, avait récemment indiqué que son gouvernement entend aider la Police et d’autres institutions publiques à rétablir la sécurité sur le territoire haïtien. Jean Michel Lapin prône une affaire Pétrocaribe sans passion
C’est une voie nouvelle que prône l’ex Premier Ministre haïtien, M. Jean Michel Lapin. Il fait un plaidoyer pour une révision de la méthode actuelle en ce qui a trait à la reddition des comptes.
Il insiste sur la nécessité de dépolitiser l’affaire Pétrocaribe. De l’avis de M. Lapin il faut une investigation technique sur les fonds decaissés dans le cadre de l’achat de produits pétroliers au Venezuela.
Intervenant à l’émission Le Point de Télé Métropole, M. Lapin a plaidé pour que la justice administrative soit mise en branle avant la justice pénale.
Ce sont les enquêteurs de la Cour Supérieure des Comptes et du Contentieux Administratif (CSCCA) qui doivent donner le ton. Il se déclare contre le lancement des investigations judiciaires sans des arrêts du tribunal administratif.L’ex Premier Ministre de Jovenel Moïse regrette les fréquentes interférences de la politique dans cette affaire.
À son avis plusieurs projets ont été réalisés. Il cite entre autres le marché de Jacmel.Selon l’ex PM a. i. le président Préval s’était tenu à distance des fonds Pétrocaribe. Il avait insisté pour qu’une partie des montants disponibles soient laissés à la disposition du prochain gouvernement.
M Lapin juge que plusieurs Premier ministres et ministres sont responsables uniquement parce qu’ils avaient signé les documents . Ce sont des ordonateurs et à ce titre ils doivent endosser les actions, ajoute t-il. M. Lapin cite notamment le cas de Mme Duvivier Pierre Louis qui à son avis n’était pas coupable de détournement des fonds.

Jamaica Showcased as International Model Kai Newman Gives Tour of Kingston in Harper’s Bazaar
Using the personal perspective of international fashion model Kai Newman, a Jamaican who was born in Kingston, Harper’s Bazaar magazine showcases the elements that make the island nation unique. The magazine notes that the small country of Jamaica has had a big influence on the world’s culture through its music, cuisine, and patois language. It is a place where people asking questions about art, freedom, and humanity are making an art form from their everyday lives.
During a fashion shoot in Jamaica, Harper’s Bazaar asked Newman to detail her experience as a Jamaican model doing a fashion shoot in her own country, and the first thing she mentioned was how nice it was to receive a positive response from the local people. Jamaica is frequently the site of fashion shoots, but it is rare for a shoot to feature a Jamaican model, and the crowds were excited to watch Newman at work. “It’s nice to work where people are rooting for you,” she said, adding that she felt more relaxed because she was home, doing the shoot in her own country and culture.

Newman had taken time off from modeling to have her daughter, and then she faced the COVID-19 lockdown where she could not work. Afterward, her manager and modeling agent Deiwight Peters told her she should “get back in the game.” She was ready to do so and cited her new baby as her motivation. Realizing she had to work to support her daughter, Newman is studying to be a nurse as well as working as a model and being a mother.
The Kingston shoot was Newman’s first time working with her daughter, who displayed her readiness for the job by choosing her own options for clothing when they were made available. Newman says her daughter acted as “her own stylist.” Her mother’s advice for modeling? Just look into the camera. “She’s ready for it,” Newman said.
Newman, a top model with Saint International, made her comeback during Milan Fashion Week in Milan, Italy, on February 24, 2022. This was her first show since becoming a mother, and she succeed in making a “phenomenal fashion comeback,” according to Peters who noted the historic nature of taking nearly four years off, having her baby, and then returning to represent Prada, the iconic Italian fashion brand, in Milan.

Stonebwoy Says Jamaican Patois Similar to Twi Language
Ghanaian Afropop, dancehall, and reggae musician. Stonebwoy, has noted the similarities between Twi, the language that is most widely spoken in Ghana, and Jamaica’s patois. In conversation at the New York studios of Hot97 FM in the United States, Stonebwoy, whose flexibility in Jamaican patois in part fueled his rise in popularity in the global music scene, also emphasized the Ghanaian origins in Jamaican culture.
Twi is spoken in the southern and central parts of Ghana by 17 million to 18 million people in the country. The Akan people, who represent the largest ethnic group among the 17 major groups in Ghana, are the chief speakers of Twi. Approximately 80 percent of Ghana’s population speaks Twi as their first or second language. Twi originated in the 13th century when the Akan people moved into the forest and coasts in the southern part of Ghana. In the 19th century, the British colonized Ghana and introduced English, which many Akans learned. The British had problems pronouncing Twi words, however, and some of their mispronunciations became accepted as the correct form of some Twi words. The Twi language spread to South America and the Caribbean as a result of the slave trade. Escaped enslaved people and their descendants continued to use the language. It is still spoken today in Jamaica and Suriname. Some of the best-known Twi works in these countries are the Anansi stories. There was no written Twi language until 1978 when the Akan Orthography Committee established orthography for the Akans and collected some 20,000 words.
Stonebwoy was born Livingstone Etse Satekla in 1988 in Ashairman, Ghana. He is the CEO of the Burniton Music Group and the winner of the “Best International Act: Africa” award at the 2015 BET Awards and Artist of the Year at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards. He also received two Billboard plaques and is known as the king of reggae and dancehall in Africa
He is in the process of making his fifth studio album and is teasing his fans with mentions of what will be included. He said it will feature some “heavy names” and indicated that is likely to drop the album in the US. He did reveal that reggae recording artist Shaggy makes an appearance on the album, also naming Angelique Kidjo and Dexta Daps as collaborators. The album features Maporisa as well, one of the most popular artists and deejays from South Africa.
Stonebwoy wants the end product to be “organic” and not forced, and he told fans to “rest assured” that there is “some beautiful stuff” on the album. The project will feature Amapiano and reggae sounds. Amapiano is the most popular music style from South Africa at the moment, and his recordings are merging those sounds with Afrobeats. He then adds some dancehall notes and his own style.

Man nabbed with imported ganja fined $5.4 million, jailed for 5 years
A man nabbed with imported marijuana has been fined $5.4 million and jailed for five years.

Andy Jainandan appeared before his worship Magistrate Mr. Dylon Bess in Georgetown Magistrate Court and pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for trafficking, the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) reported.
CANU intercepted Jainandan on Saturday last. He was carrying 12 lbs (5.36 kgs) of the imported cannabis worth G$1.8 million.
