Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to infrastructure and housing development across Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne), highlighting Moleson Creek as one of the most significant upcoming schemes in the region.

During a visit to several ongoing housing development sites on Friday, Croal disclosed that more than $20 billion is being invested to develop several new housing areas in the region, including Moleson Creek, Glasgow, Overwinning, Providence, and Hogstye.

Moleson Creek, in particular, is poised to become one of the largest housing and economic hubs in the region.

Phase One of infrastructure works in the area, valued at $3.5 billion, has already been awarded to 22 contractors. However, progress has slowed due to limited access.

“Debushing has started. The access road has posed a challenge, and that’s currently being done by the Ministry of Public Works. They have to build a bridge so they can create a shortcut, then work can resume in about a month,” Croal explained.

In the meantime, he is appealing to persons who have already received land allocations in Moleson Creek to remain patient.

“We started allocations in 2024 and continued into 2025. I know many have been asking when they’ll be able to access their lots, but we are working steadily to ensure the necessary infrastructure is in place,” he said.

The government’s broader developmental plan for Moleson Creek is ambitious. With the ongoing construction of a bridge linking Guyana and Suriname, the area is expected to emerge as a major hub for housing and economic activity.

Meanwhile, work in other areas is progressing steadily.

Land preparation has begun in Glasgow, Overwinning, and Providence, while an access bridge at Hostye is slated for completion within a month.

The first phase of infrastructure works at Hogstye is expected to be completed by mid-November, allowing more than 300 allottees to begin accessing their lands.

Croal emphasised that the combined housing developments across Region Six will significantly reduce the current backlog of over 6,000 pending applicants.

“With the lands we have here, we believe we have enough lots to address the outstanding applications in Region Six,” he said.

Christina Jagernauth is pleading for the public’s assistance to save her three-month-old daughter, baby Alia, who has been diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare and life-threatening liver condition.

Biliary atresia affects babies and occurs when bile ducts that carry bile from the liver to the intestine are blocked. Bile is a yellow-green fluid made by the liver, it helps the body digest fats in food and get rid of waste products from the liver.

According to Jagernauth, baby Alia was born on June 28, 2025, and appeared healthy at birth. However, later that night, the newborn began vomiting and weeks later she was diagnosed with liver failure.

Currently, liver transplant surgeries are not done in Guyana and so Jagernauth is seeking assistance for the procedure to be done overseas in Jamaica.

Alia spent the first 15 days of her life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

After she was discharged, her mother said doctors told them to follow up in two months. At the two-month visit, doctors conducted more tests and Alia was again admitted to the hospital.

“After they did the blood tests and MRI, the doctors told me that my baby’s liver was damaged and that her gallbladder was missing. They said she would need a liver transplant as soon as possible,” Jagernauth told the News Room.

According to an official document from the hospital, surgical intervention is most effective within 70 to 90 days after birth through a procedure known as hepatic portoenterostomy (Kasai procedure).

However, Alia’s diagnosis came after that critical window, leaving a liver transplant as her only viable option.

A visibly emotional Jagernauth said the infant cries a lot because she is in pain.

“I am begging the public for help. My baby needs a liver transplant as soon as possible,” she pleaded.

In a historic milestone for women’s sports in Guyana, Nexgen Golf Academy has been officially designated as the country’s first and only Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA)/United States Golf Association (USGA) Girls Site.

This prestigious recognition marks a major step forward in the development of golf for young women, empowering them to use the sport as a platform to build courage, integrity, leadership, and lifelong opportunities, including pathways to college scholarships and even careers on the LPGA Tour.

Assistant Director of Sport Melissa Dow-Richardson praised the rapid progress of the initiative, stating: “It pleases me to see the growth of this golf programme in such a short time, especially given that there was virtually no foundation to start with.

“To see the expansion across regions in Guyana- and more importantly, that over 60% of our 20,000+ new players are female- is astounding. I am proud to recognise the efforts of everyone involved and must give special credit to Mr. (Aleem) Hussain for his exceptional dedication and contributions.”

Since 2023, the Guyana Golf Association (GGA) and Nexgen Golf Academy have collaborated with several international organisations to expand and promote the sport locally, making golf one of the fastest-growing activities among youth in Guyana.

The launch featured students from Westminster Secondary School, Diamond Secondary and Westside High School along with fashion designer Sonia Noel and One Communications Andrea King.

According to GGA President, Aleem Hussain, “A chance conversation with Assistant Director of Sports, Melissa Dow-Richardson, in 2019 when she informed me that golf was an elective for PE in schools was the catalyst for this amazing programme we’ve developed to date.”

Several parents continued to voice their concerns about the conditions at the Beterverwagting Primary School, with some individuals locking the gate of the school to prevent anyone from entering early Thursday morning.

Pupils and teachers of the school have long been tormented by pigeons whose droppings have contaminated the premises. Some cleaning was done over the weekend, and mesh was installed in some areas to prevent the pigeons from accessing the classrooms.

“As much as work is being done at the school, it is not sufficient. The environment is not conducive to learning or teaching,” President of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Alvin McCurdy, told reporters on Thursday.

McCurdy and other parents called for the school to be closed and thoroughly sanitised.

On Thursday, Regional Councillor Neville Cumberbatch told reporters that much work was done over the weekend. Remedial work included covering exposed areas with protective mesh to prevent the birds from entering the classrooms and cleaning some of the classrooms.

When Cumberbatch took reporters inside the school, mesh was seen covering some of the exposed areas, and some classrooms appeared as though they were recently cleaned. However, several birds were still seen inside some of the classrooms and along the corridors. Additionally, the library remained contaminated with pigeon droppings. There was also no running water at the time of the visit.

In response to these issues, Education Minister Sonia Parag has given instructions for several immediate actions to be taken to improve the conditions at the school.

The News Room understands that before Monday, the school will be power-washed, all plumbing issues will be fixed, any remaining access points that allow pigeons to get inside the buildings will be sealed, and all overgrown vegetation will be removed. While these actions are undertaken, other long-term solutions for the BV Primary School and all other schools affected with similar issues are being explored.

“We are currently working to assess various schools throughout the regions where this may be a problem and looking at a long-term solution for the schools,” Parag told the News Room.

At the Beterverwagting School, parents and teachers hope for a lasting solution.

Jomo Peters, a 45-year-old man resident of Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara (ECD), died on Thursday morning after he collided with two vehicles along the Rupert Craig Highway.

Police Headquarters reported that Peters was riding a motorcycle without his helmet and speeding on the highway near Pump Road, Liliendaal.

While overtaking a line of traffic, Police said, the left side handlebar of the man’s motorcycle collided with the left side and rear view mirror of motorcar PYY 4296, which was driven by a 21-year-old woman and proceeding west. Peters reportedly lost control of his motorcycle and then further collided with the left side front portion of motor car PAE 9879, driven by a 28-year-old woman, which was also proceeding west.

After colliding with the second vehicle, Peters was flung onto the median, sustaining multiple injuries to his head and body. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was later taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, breathalyser tests conducted on both drivers showed no trace of alcohol. Both drivers are in custody, assisting with further investigations.

Justice Roxane George continues to perform the duties of acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, as the former acting Chancellor, Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, has not been sworn in again to perform the duties of acting Chancellor.

Justice Cummings-Edwards proceeded on vacation leave in August 2025. Justice George, who was Guyana’s acting Chief Justice, was sworn in as acting Chancellor. She remains in this position, according to reliable sources, who explained that Justice George’s instrument of appointment while acting would have superseded any previous acting instrument.

Meanwhile, Justice Navindra Singh was sworn in to carry out the responsibilities of Chief Justice. It is understood that after her leave, Justice Cummings-Edwards will return in her capacity as a Court of Appeal judge.

There are over 600 fish species in Guyana but efforts to ensure endangered species are protected remain a challenge.

Speaking at a forum at the University of Guyana, Randy Bumbury, a Fisheries Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, disclosed that there are challenges with protecting endangered fish.

“Overfishing is suspected of certain high value species, notably the Arapaima,” he said.

The Arapaima fish is widely sought for its meat. A study on the fish in Guyana, conducted by foreign and local biologists, found that the Arapaima here is different from those around the world, making it critically endangered.

But it’s not just the Arapaima. The Hammerhead shark, also critically endangered, may be another stakeholders should be concerned about.

Bumbury warned that fisherfolk need to be careful about the fish caught and sold.

“As we eat shark, it means we have to be quite careful about the species that we are extracting. Measures have to be in place to ensure that these species are protected,” he said.

Guyana has policies in place to assist with monitoring fishing operations.

While systems are formed to tackle some issues, the matter of microplastics remains a constant battle.

“There’s been serious concerns over the fish having some aspects of microplastics within them, they’ve been studies done in Guyana which demonstrated that some microplastics have been found in these fishes but it’s how we can manage the situation, it means more awareness,” he said.

Microplastics eaten by fish can damage their tissues and the chemicals can be passed on to humans who consume them.
