Shawn Lovell, a 57-year-old security guard, was stabbed multiple times and killed by his colleague, 38-year-old Junior Anthony Lindore, on Saturday night at the Guyana National Museum.

Police Headquarters reported that the crime occurred at about 19:00 hrs Saturday.

Lovell and Lindore are both employees of Atlas Security Service and were both scheduled to work at the museum on Saturday.

At 17:40 hrs Saturday, Police said, Lindore went to the Guyana National Museum where he took over duty from Lovell. However, at about 19:00 hrs, Lovell reportedly returned to the guard hut at the museum, where he accused Lindore of stealing his cellphone.

Police said a heated argument ensued, and Lindore reportedly stabbed Lovell to his back (twice), his right shoulder and right hand (four times). Lovell reportedly ran out from the guard hut and fell in a nearby concrete drain, east of the museum, motionless.

The Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned but Lovell was pronounced dead. Three knives and one cutlass were found in the guard hut.

The scene was processed by a team from the Crime Scene Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department. Additionally, several persons were questioned.

The suspect was also contacted at the scene, where he was told of the allegation, arrested, and cautioned. Police said he subsequently confessed to the crime, and a video/audio interview was conducted with him.

Meanwhile, Lovell’s body was escorted to the Memorial Garden Funeral Home, awaiting an autopsy.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Sunday issued a national appeal for calm, responsibility, and unity as Guyanese prepare to head to the polls on Monday for the General and Regional Elections.

Calling on citizens, political leaders, and activists to act with restraint and maturity, the Head of State stressed that democracy must be safeguarded by both respect for the process and acceptance of the outcome.

“Elections should not be a contest to divide us, but a mechanism to unify us under the banner of democratic sovereignty,” President Ali declared in his televised address to the nation less than 24 hours before the electorate heads to the polls.

He urged every eligible voter to cast their ballot with confidence, dignity, and respect for the choices of others.

“Vote free from fear, vote free from intimidation. Vote with assurance that your choice is yours alone,” he said, adding, “And it is the right of your neighbour to make his or her choice and be respected as zealously as your own. It is our solemn duty to respect each other’s choice, but even more so, to respect the collective will of the people.”

While affirming that law enforcement agencies stand ready to protect peace and security, President Ali made clear that the greater responsibility rests with citizens themselves.

“Peace will prevail, not because it is enforced, but because it is embraced,” he noted.

The President specifically called on political leaders and activists to temper their rhetoric and avoid actions that could incite conflict.

“Let us avoid inflammatory rhetoric. Let us respect the rules of the electoral process. Let us temper our passion and allow good sense and decency to guide our actions,” Ali appealed.

He reminded the nation that the right to vote was won through sacrifice and must be honoured with respect for the collective will of the people.

“To reject this right is to dishonour their sacrifice, to surrender it carelessly is to imperil our sovereignty,” he warned.

President Ali urged that the conduct of the polls set the tone for the future, a spirit of collaboration and unity above division.

“When the ballots are counted and the results declared, let us not allow bitterness, enmity, or disappointment to stain the process… Let us give our children the example of a people who can disagree without discord, who can contest without contempt, and who can choose without chaos.

“I urge that through our actions, we ensure that these elections are peaceful and orderly; that our democracy once more prevails with honour and that our motherland emerges stronger and more united,” the Head of State concluded.

With just 24 hours left before Guyanese head to the polls, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has issued a strong warning to the public to remain “vigilant” and cautioned against the spread of fake news and misinformation designed to keep voters home.

“Watch out for the fake news from tonight all the way to Monday afternoon, watch out for it. The social media activists are going to work overtime, they will tell you – ‘oh the PPP just killed 10 persons there, that they are criticizing Afro –Guyanese, that they hate all sorts of people, watch out for the rumours between now and election night,” Jagdeo said at the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) final rally at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

Jagdeo specifically named individuals such as Norman Browne, Rickford Burke, and “Melly Mel” as being among those he believes will be spreading such misinformation in the coming days.

“They are going to come with a lot of lies, and that is intended to keep people away from the party and at home.

“Watch out early on Monday morning, what lies they will tell, don’t fall for that, don’t fall for their bullying people or threatening that there will be violence because the security forces will deal with them if they attempt to disrupt the polls,” Jagdeo stated.

Reflecting on the 2020 elections, Jagdeo praised the resilience of the Guyanese people and called for the same courage and determination to be shown on Monday.

“If the people in 2020 had been weak-hearted, today we would not be here. This country would have been a disaster. Don’t let fear or rumours stop you from voting,” the Vice President urged.

Instead, he urged all citizens to turn out at the polls and underscored the importance of every vote in shaping the nation’s future.

“You are voting for your life, your family, your children, the future of the country, and for unity. To the young people, I’m counting on you. Don’t be distracted by the lies or excuses from the other side,” he said.

General Secretary of the PPP/C and Vice President of Guyana, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, took the stage of the party’s final rally on Saturday at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara and outlined three major reasons why the party should be re-elected at the September 1 general and regional elections.

Speaking to thousands of supporters, Jagdeo’s first reason is that the PPP/C is the only party that is seeking to bridge the racial barrier in Guyana.

“Guyana will achieve sustained prosperity only if it goes forward as a united country, and that is why the PPP is the only party that is standing strong to bring people together.

“The orders are still spreading fear. They’re trying to tell Afro-Guyanese that you cannot trust the PPP. Well, you look at our five years of track record, and Afro-Guyanese have made the greatest progress ever in our history, compared to APNU,” Jagdeo said.

His second reason is that the PPP keeps its commitments.

“Rarely, in this world, do you find politicians and political parties who will put down a list of ideas and promises and then work hard to deliver on them.

“And every one of you would have read the flyers now that we have circulated them, and you would see the list of promises we made in 2020, and today, we have kept every one of them.”

The third reason the Vice President listed is leadership. He referenced the WIN party, led by United States-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed, highlighting that they have yet to name their Presidential Candidate.

“In any country,  you need strong leadership to take our country forward. You have heard the comparisons before. You have one leader of WIN,  he has not even named his prime ministerial candidate, as of tonight.

“The guy can’t even read as well as your ten-year-old would. They hide him around the country. They do interviews among themselves, and they hide from the media. He has not had a single press conference. He can’t represent us locally, much less abroad.

“How will he keep us safe from Venezuela, which has its eyes on our country?

They run a social media campaign because on social media a Dumbo could look smart, like him. And so, that’s no choice for anyone,” the General Secretary said.

He then turned his attention to the Presidential Candidate of the main opposition APNU, Aubrey Norton.

“Norton is incapable of managing anything. So, you’re risking your entire future, and this is for people at home and those who were not undecided up to now.”

He urged the electorate to stay steadfast with the PPP/C, noting that “leadership matters, and on this stage , we have had accumulated leadership.”

Prime Minister Mark Phillips Saturday night urged voters to deliver the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) a “super-majority” in Monday’s general elections, saying it is needed to accelerate development and raise living standards.

Speaking at the PPP/C’s final rally at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, Phillips said Guyana’s oil wealth must be used to empower citizens through education, affordable electricity and social programmes. He noted that the government had already removed fuel taxes to cushion global price shocks and promised that electricity costs would be cut by half as early as next year when the gas to energy project comes on stream.

To ensure the PPP governs without hindrance, he told voters the Parliamentary numbers are needed.

“We want a super-majority government to pass the bills in Parliament to bring a better standard of living,” he told supporters.

The Prime Minister highlighted President Irfaan Ali’s international reputation, contrasting it with Guyana’s past when the country was classified as a heavily indebted poor country (HIPC) and plagued by rigged elections.

He dismissed opposition figures, including Nigel Hughes, as “wishing” for the PPP/C to become a minority government, and declared that only Ali’s tried, tested and “performing” leadership could safeguard Guyana’s progress.

With oil and gas revenues rising, Phillips said the government’s focus would remain on education, social protection and youth empowerment.

“Development, development, development” and “empowerment, empowerment, empowerment” is the path of the PPP, he said.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, delivered a passionate address at the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C)’s final rally on Saturday evening at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, urging citizens to vote for the party in the upcoming elections.

Speaking to a sea of supporters clad in red, Minister Persaud said the party’s track record over the past five years has seen “unparalleled development” in every sector, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and human services.

“This is a party that has upheld and fought for democracy, a party you have placed your confidence in and one that has delivered,” Persaud stated.

And once re-elected to government, Minister Persaud said the PPP/C “will continue to deliver.”

With the Regional and General Elections just 24 hours away, Persaud used the opportunity on Saturday night to call on Guyanese to ensure a “landslide victory” for the PPP/C.“You have a right to exercise your vote. It is your right, your choice, your voice, and I am seeing you all over this country, standing proudly in your red,” Minister Persaud said.

Outlining new and continued initiatives, such as a $200,000 school and transportation grant for children, Dr. Persaud placed a strong focus on the party’s efforts to support children and families.

“Every child will benefit from a $100,000 grant from the moment they enter this world. No child will be left without an education because we care for and cater to their families,” Dr. Persaud said.

She also highlighted free education from nursery to tertiary. In the area of healthcare, Minister Persaud noted the government’s investment not only in building hospitals but also in training the necessary personnel to staff them.

“All citizens receive health vouchers, spectacles vouchers; this is about caring for our people’s wellbeing,” Persaud stated.

The minister also celebrated the achievements of the Women’s Innovation and Investment Network (WIIN), launched in 2021, which she said has provided free skills training to over 18,000 women across the country.

“That’s the real WIIN, the one that has transformed lives and allowed women to earn a living,” she stated.

Closing her speech, Dr. Persaud invoked the legacy of the party’s founders.

“With the power of your vote, choose twice, at the top and bottom of the ballot paper for the PPP/C. Vote so the legacies of Cheddi Jagan and Janet Jagan can live on. Long live the People’s Progressive Party/Civic!”

Celebrated Amerindian leader Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett on Saturday pledged that the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) would never abandon the country’s Amerindian communities, promising continued investment in their development ahead of Monday’s general and regional elections.

Rodrigues-Birkett, who was born in the Amerindian village of Santa Rosa and served as Minister of Amerindian Affairs from 2001 to 2008 before becoming the country’s first female Foreign Affairs Minister, told supporters that Indigenous communities have seen the “greatest development ever” under the PPP/C.

She said that this has been the case on every hill, and in every creek, river or valley.

“Let me be clear – the PPP has never, and will never, abandon our Amerindian communities on the development road or any other road,” she said.

Rodrigues-Birkett now serves as Guyana’s ambassador at its Permanent Mission at the United Nations.

She recalled criticisms of Indigenous people as being “greedy” by the  opposition, and accused rival political parties of misleading residents about cash grants.

“This is why we condemn any action by anyone or any party who will stand in the way of Amerindian development and who will disrespect Amerindians,” she said.

Indigenous people, who make up about 10% of Guyana’s population, are seen as an important voting bloc in the September 1 election.

When you compare it to the others, it is jock to cheese! Comrades, you cannot gamble at this election.

“No complacency, no carelessness, every single vote must count.

Nandlall said the opposition camp is trying desperately to break the national unity that the PPP/C has built over the years.

Choosing leadership is serious business and no monkey business, celebrated Amerindian leader Carolyn-Rodrigues-Birkett told tens of thousands of PPP supporters Saturday afternoon, saying the PPP’s Irfaan Ali cannot be compared to ‘little boy blue’ and any other running to be president at Monday’s general elections.

Rodrigues, ambassador at Guyana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations praised President Irfaan Ali’s leadership, asking voters to imagine if Azruddin Mohamed, the sanctioned businessman running for president, had to speak at the United Nations. Though not addressing him by name, she said that would not be the time to look in the air, referring to the viral photo of Mohamed at Nominations Day.

On the other hand, she said Dr Ali knows what he is about and he is a tested leader.

“There is no comparison,” she said.

She said President Ali can speak on any issue, in and out of Guyana, on climate change, economic development, peace and security.

Rodrigues-Birkett said the government had channelled more resources directly to citizens than at any time in the country’s history, crediting what she called “capable, tested leadership” from Ali,

She said countries with far more resources than Guyana have collapsed because of bad leadership, referring to the situation in Venezuela.

Rodrigues-Birkett urged voters to turn out in large numbers on September 1, saying the PPP/C was offering “the strongest team of leadership Guyana has ever had.”

Former PNC/R member, James Bond, took the stage at the final rally of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara on Saturday, encouraging the electorate to give the party another term in government.

Now a PPP/C member and on the list of candidates, Bond told the thousands of people gathered that the PPP/C is the only party that they can trust to continue the country’s development.

“We know we could trust this party, we know we could rely on this party, we know we could trust this President, because this President has given us the ability and the empowerment to live our true selves,” Bond said.

He reminded the crowd that the PPP/C is the only party in Guyana’s history to have achieved massive successes.

“In the history of our country, no other government has built more schools, no other government has built more homes, no other government has built more hospitals, no other government has put more money into the pockets of ordinary Guyanese in the history of our country than the People’s Progressive Party Civic.

“I could speak from experience,” Bond said.

Even though he was once a critic of the PPP/C, Bond said the party welcomed him with open arms.

“Nobody here has cursed Bharrat Jagdeo more than me, nobody has cursed President Irfaan Ali more than me, and here today, a young Afro-Guyanese from Bagotville and Mabaruma is speaking to this thousands, upon thousands…

“How did a little Afro-Guyanese from humble beginnings get here? I got to thank God, but I got to thank the People’s Progressive Party Civic that welcomed me like a family…

“I got to thank you, the members of the People’s Progressive Party Civic who welcomed me, James Bond, a former PNC, into the PPP family.”

Bond ended with a message for the Opposition Presidential Candidate: “I want Aubrey Norton in Bam Bam alley to hear ‘Ali, Ali, Ali!’.”
