The case against 25-year-old Dion Adam Richards, charged with causing death by dangerous driving, was dismissed on Wednesday after Magistrate Abigail Gibbs upheld a no-case submission at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

Richards, a resident of Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was charged on November 9, 2023, following a tragic accident on the Railway Embankment Road at Triumph, East Coast Demerara, which resulted in the death of 32-year-old Curtly Christopher Cambridge of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

He was subsequently charged with causing death by dangerous driving and placed on $400,000 bail.

At the conclusion of the trial, attorney Bernard da Silva, who represented Richards, argued that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case, prompting the magistrate to dismiss the case.

Police reported that the accident occurred around 01:15 hrs on November 8, 2023 when Cambridge, who was riding motorcycle CK 1795, collided with the rear of a motor lorry, GAB 8067, owned by Build Smart Construction and driven by Richards.

Richards had told Police that he had turned north onto Agriculture Road when the speeding motorcyclist rode into the lorry.

As a result of the collision Cambridge fell to the ground and sustain fatal head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A subsequent breathalyzer test on Richards showed no trace of alcohol.

Ravichandran Ashwin has retired from the IPL. He made the announcement on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday morning, vowing to start exploring “the game around various leagues”.

He ends as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the IPL with 187 strikes at an economy rate of 7.2.

Ashwin started off and ended playing for Chennai Super Kings, the team that represents his home city, but he also played for Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, and captained Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).

Ashwin, India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, is already retired from international cricket. He made that announcement in December 2024, midway through India’s tour of Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Ashwin won the IPL with CSK in 2010 and 2011, but his homecoming in IPL 2025 after eight years of playing for other teams turned out to be less than ideal. Ashwin, who was acquired by CSK at the mega auction last year for INR 9.75 crore, played nine of 14 matches.

This was the first time since 2009, Ashwin’s first season, that he played fewer than 12 games in a season. It was also his costliest year: he went for 9.12 runs an over, the first time that his season economy rate went past 8.49.

Ashwin can now play in other leagues around the world, much like his state mate, Dinesh Karthik, who retired from the IPL in June 2024 and went on to feature in the SA20 six months later.

The BCCI doesn’t allow any current player in Indian international or domestic cricket to feature in overseas T20 leagues. Karthik now takes up coaching roles in Indian cricket, and plays in other leagues when he can. Like Karthik, Ashwin will also have to step away from the TNPL (Tamil Nadu Premier League) to be able to play overseas.

Should franchises be interested in his services, Ashwin will now have the option to play in the BBL in Australia, the SA20 in South Africa, The ILT20 in the UAE, the Hundred in England and the CPL in the West Indies.

Ashwin has always sought to keep learning and keep competing in whatever cricket he can.

Having brought an end to his international career, Ashwin perhaps now wants to have the most fun with whatever top-level cricket he has left in his soon to be 39-year-old body. Even when part of Indian cricket, he threw himself into the TNPL every opportunity he got.

That he managed to survive in the IPL for as long as he did is testament to Ashwin’s itch to frequently keep upgrading. He is the only traditional fingerspinner in the top eight wicket-takers in the IPL, a considerable achievement given that fingerspinners, especially those whose stock delivery turns into the right-hand batter, have been pushed to the margins of T20s.

To stay relevant in the format, he also worked on his power-hitting to be able to do a role for RR. He started to open the batting in the TNPL in order to become a better hitter.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, on Tuesday night, said he spoke to the 10-year-old boy injured in the Charlotte Street shooting and assured him that the entire nation stands by his side.

“I assured him that he carries with him the love and compassion of an entire nation, and that we will stand firmly by his side as he works to overcome this painful trauma and ordeal.

“I call upon our religious leaders, and indeed all our people, to lift this child in prayer and to ask the Almighty to surround him with strength, comfort, and healing in the days and months ahead,” the President wrote in a Facebook post.

The 10-year-old boy was injured after he was shot in the chest by his father, Alroy Solomon.

Alroy had gone to the Charlotte Street apartment, his son and partner, Teekadai Atiya Solomon were renting around 11:50 hrs Tuesday. Police reported that Alroy ran into the yard where his wife and son lived, triggering screams and several gunshots. Teekadai attempted to escape but was pursued onto the street, where Alroy shot her multiple times, causing her to collapse on the roadway.

The armed man then returned to the yard, where he fired a single round at their son, striking him on the left side of his lower chest. Alroy later turned the gun on himself, discharging a round to the left side of his head.

The couple, who had lived at North East La Penitence, had been separated for about two months due to domestic issues. Teekadai had since relocated to Charlotte Street with her son.

A devastating head-on collision between two motor lorries claimed the lives of three people on Tuesday afternoon along the Loo Creek Public Road on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

Two of the victims have been identified so far. They are Lional Campbell, 73, of Kuru Kururu Village, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, and Venezuelan nation, Meli, only name given).

The accident occurred around 12:30 hrs and left one vehicle engulfed in flames.

The crash involved motor lorry, GAG 313, owned by Mohamed Construction Inc. and driven by 29-year-old Venezuelan national Carlos Yasmanie, and motor lorry, GXX 1546, owned by Tristan Grimmond and driven by Campbell.

The Guyana Police Force, in a statement, said the lorry GAG 313 was traveling north at a high speed when the driver reportedly swerved to avoid a slowing car ahead.

In doing so, he reportedly veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the southbound lorry.

Following the impact, lorry GAG 313 caught fire with “Meli” who was trapped inside. She was burnt to death before rescue efforts could reach her.

The unidentified victim was a passenger of the lorry driven by Campbell.

Emergency Medical Technicians arrived swiftly at the scene where the victims were pronounced dead. Police said the bodies were transported to the Pensioners Mortuary in Linden, awaiting post-mortem examinations; however, when the News Room visited the scene at about 19:00 hrs at least one body was still on the roadside.

Meanwhile, it was reported too that Yasmanie, the only survivor, was pulled from the burning truck by bystanders.

He sustained a broken left leg and multiple lacerations and was transported to Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing.

Moments after chasing down and riddling his estranged wife with bullets on Charlotte Street, Georgetown, on Tuesday, 36-year-old Alroy Solomon turned his weapon on their 10-year-old son, shooting the boy in the chest, before fatally shooting himself.

The woman, identified as Teekadai Atiya Solomon, 36, was killed in front of her rented apartment at Lot 199 Charlotte and Bourda Street, shortly before noon.

Police said the suspect arrived at the property around 11:50 hrs in a black motorcar (registration GUY 94). He ran into the yard where his wife and son lived, triggering screams and several gunshots. Teekadai attempted to escape but was pursued onto the street, where Alroy shot her multiple times, causing her to collapse on the roadway.

The armed man then returned to the yard, where he fired a single round at their son, striking him to the left side of his lower chest. He later turned the gun on himself, discharging a round to the left side of his head.

Public-spirited persons rushed the injured boy to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he is said to be in a stable condition.

Police confirmed that Teekadai sustained at least nine gunshot wounds, including to her chest, abdomen, hip, forehead and limbs. Crime Scene investigators recovered a 9mm pistol with a magazine containing six live rounds, along with a spent shell near the suspect.

The couple, who had lived at North East La Penitence, had been separated for about two months due to domestic issues. Teekadai had since relocated to Charlotte Street with her son.

The bodies of both Teekadai and Alroy Solomon are at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.

In an unprecedented move to amplify the voices of children, the Childcare and Protection Agency hosted its first national Children’s Conference on Tuesday, bringing together children from across the country to engage directly in discussions about their safety, wellbeing and future.

The conference saw the participation of 200 children. It provided a platform for children aged 9 to 16 to share their experiences, ask questions, and offer recommendations to policymakers.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud told the News Room the event was designed to ensure that children not only feel heard but are seen as active participants in shaping the society they live in.

“This is about giving children the space to speak, to understand their worth and to realise that no matter their background, they have a future filled with possibility,” Dr Persaud said.

Among the topics discussed were sexual and reproductive health, children’s rights, mental health and wellbeing and accessibility and inclusion.

Children from various regions, including those living in state care and from vulnerable communities, were represented at the conference. The sessions focused on fostering a sense of inclusion, awareness, and empowerment, with support from experts and representatives from several agencies.

Dr Persaud stressed the importance of making the conference an annual event, potentially rotating it across regions to ensure wider participation.

“This must not be a one-time event.

“We want every child to know what resources are available to them and to recognise their role in building a safer, stronger society,” Dr Persaud told the News Room.

The conference marks a significant step toward inclusive child-centered policy development in Guyana, with the hope that children’s voices will continue to influence decisions that affect their lives.

The theme for the conference is “Empowering Children for a Safer Future”.

A woman and her partner tragically died in an alleged murder/suicide incident in Charlotte Street, Georgetown, on Tuesday at about noon.

The woman has been identified as Teekadai Atiya Solomon, 36; the shooter has been identified as 36-year-old Alroy Solomon.

The couple’s 10-year-old son was also injured in the shooting and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Investigators are on the scene conducting a probe into the shooting.

The News Room understands that the woman was an employee of ExxonMobil Guyana. The couple had recently filed for divorce. 

She was renting the property on Charlotte Street after her house was destroyed in a fire a few months ago. 

The property owner’s brother Coel Marks, told reporters at the scene that the couple had domestic issues and that police are investigating at least two shooting incidents at the property within the last three months. 

The News Room will provide more updates on the story as details unfold.
