The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has received a valid request for the recount of the ballots cast in Sub-District 4 of District 4 from the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
In this regard, the Commission will conduct the recount on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 8:00 hours, using a total of 25 workstations. The recount exercise will proceed uninterrupted until completion.
In view of the foregoing development, the Chief Election Officer, Mr. Vishnu Persaud has written to all political parties informing them of the APNU’s request and the need for each party to ensure that at least one accredited agent is present for each workstation.
The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) should continue in government following the declaration of results from the last electoral district, Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni).
Based on the results from this region, the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party gained control of the region with 5,098 votes in the general election. The PPP/C trailed just behind with 3,728 votes.
Meanwhile, the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) coalition got 983 votes, the Alliance for Change (AFC) got 415 votes, and the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) got 59 votes. The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) did not contest in this region.
In the last elections, APNU got 4,813 votes in the general election while the PPP/C got 3,728 votes.
The results for Region Seven were the last to be declared. And with these results, the PPP is on course to go back into government. The party got the most votes in eight of the 10 regions; WIN got the most votes in Regions 7 and 10.
Overall, six political parties contested the September 1 elections. The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is slated to announce the official declaration of the results soon.
Two days after Guyanese went to the polls, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) received the submission of all Statements of Poll (SOPs) for the General and Regional Elections.
Declarations have been made in nine out of the 10 administrative regions, with Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) being the only outstanding district to declare.
A declaration is expected to be made for that region by the end of Wednesday.
In total, 2,790 SOPs were submitted for the general elections and an equal number for the regional elections, bringing the combined tally to 5,580 SOPs.
The SOPs have been uploaded to GECOM’s website for public access and tabulation.
Regions Three, Four, and Six were divided into sub-districts for tabulation.
The declarations so far reveal a commanding performance by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), which secured the most votes in eight of the 10 regions.
Notably, the party, for the first time in Guyana’s electoral history since gaining Independence, clinched a majority in Region Four, the country’s largest voting district.
Meanwhile, the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party dominated Region Ten, outpacing the Partnership for National Unity (APNU), which has traditionally led there.
Overall, six political parties contested the September 1 elections.
The Carter Center, an accredited body to observe the country’s 2025 General and Regional Elections on Wednesday said there is no evidence of the official list of electors (OLE) being manipulated.
This was disclosed by Jason Carter, the Mission’s Leader during a press conference at the Pegasus Corporate Suites, Georgetown as he revealed the mission’s preliminary statement.
The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has faced criticism over the OLE as it does not have the power to remove a person’s name.
“We did not find any evidence that the list was manipulated. There is, of course, just looking at the numbers, you know that there are people who could come off of that list because they don’t exist, probably, you know, because they’ve passed away,” Carter said.
Voting took place at 2,790 polling stations in 1,140 polling places across the country. The OLE consisted of 757,690 voters.

The Carter Center has also noted that 97 per cent of the reports received regarding the tabulation affirmed that it was being conducted in accordance with the law.
“All of them [observers] said that they were doing it in accordance with the law. That process is cumbersome, but it is ongoing, it is transparent, and when it’s complete, I think people will have trust in the results,” Carter said.
The mission hailed GECOM’s “find my polling station” as a positive initiative. Further, the utilisation of online websites to provide information were notable improvements for transparency and access.
“Observers on Election Day found that polling staff, party agents, and GECOM, conducted themselves well and with professionalism.
“We did not see any significant irregularities of any kind,” Carter said.
According to the preliminary statement, the participation of women in this year’s election was significant and this included both voters and persons engaged in electoral duties.
Additionally, the participation of persons from the LGBTQI+ community was also noted. The mission said the contesting parties publicly endorsed the rights of this community and pledged reforms to ensure equality.
The Carter Center welcomed these initiatives aimed at advancing the enforcement of fundamental rights in Guyana and hopes that all parties will fully support the rights of the LGBTQI persons in future elections.
The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) has again won Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) based on the declaration for the electoral district, securing 18,432 votes out of the 31,122 valid votes cast.
In this electoral district, the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) coalition got 6,480 votes while the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party got 5,816 votes.
Last elections, the PPP/C got 18,326 votes in the region while APNU got 14,502 votes.
Additionally, the Alliance For Change (AFC) got 208 votes, the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) got 128 votes, and the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) got 58 votes.
Overall, the PPP/C is projected to return to office, picking up more seats in the National Assembly than it had before.
The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), which is projected to return to office, has finally won Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), an electoral district it has never clinched before.
Based on the results declared by the region’s Returning Officer and seen by the News Room, the PPP/C got 87,536 votes in the general election.
Surprisingly, the PNC-led A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) got 46,956 votes in the region. This region was never lost by the PNC, which morphed into APNU in 2011, since Guyana gained independence in 1966.
In 2020, APNU got 116,941 votes in the region while the PPP got 80,920.
Several prominent political figures, including James Bond, a former executive member of the PNC/R who defected to the PPP this year, had projected a victory for the governing party in Region Four ahead of the polls.
Meanwhile, the third-highest number of votes went to the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party; that party got 41,607 votes in the region.
The Forward Guyana Movement got 2,431 votes in the region, while the Alliance For Change got 1,765, and the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity got 497.
A total of 180,792 valid votes were cast in the region’s general elections.
Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission, Robert Biedroń, says the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) managed the September 1 polls efficiently, with polling staff performing their duties professionally and voters turning out passionately.
At a press conference held on Wednesday at the Pegasus Corporate Suites, Biedroń presented the mission’s preliminary findings following the September 1 General and Regional Elections.
The EU team, which has been present in Guyana since July 23, deployed 50 observers to 253 polling stations across the country.
The mission noted that the elections were conducted in a “peaceful and orderly” manner.
“Election Day was peaceful and efficiently run, implementing new transparency measures and recently adopted legal provisions for the first time.”
The final voters list contained 757,690 registered voters, including citizens residing abroad and Commonwealth nationals living in Guyana. According to Biedroń, candidate registration was described as “inclusive and timely” and the campaign was deemed “peaceful and competitive.”
According to Biedroń, on election day, measures such as restrictions on mobile phones at polling stations were implemented to safeguard integrity. However, observers reported that 59 percent of polling stations lacked independent access for persons with disabilities.
Despite these challenges, Biedroń commended citizens for their active participation.
“Citizens participated with passion and determination, demonstrating that democracy is not just about the law but shared responsibility,” he said.
The mission stressed that while the 2025 elections were “inclusive, peaceful,” and offered citizens meaningful choices, challenges remain.
The European Union Election Observation Mission will remain in Guyana to observe the final stages of the process, including the tabulation of results. A comprehensive final report with recommendations will be issued in the coming weeks.
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has emerged victorious once again in Region One (Barima-Waini) following the September 1 General and Regional Elections.
The declaration, seen by the News Room, showed that the PPP/C recorded 9,030 votes — an increase of 1,028 votes compared to the 8,002 secured in the 2020 polls.
The PPP/C’s performance firmly consolidated its dominance in the region, as it outpaced all competitors by a wide margin.
Its closest challenger, the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, gained 5,716 votes.
This figure not only placed WIN in second position but also saw the party earn 5,247 more votes than A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), which once commanded significant support in the region.
APNU suffered a dramatic decline, falling from 3,909 votes in 2020 to just 469 this election cycle. The Alliance For Change (AFC) and Forward Guyana Movement collected 35 and 75 votes, respectively.
In total, 15,325 valid votes were cast in Region One.
Police are investigating the murder of 50-year-old Paula Abraham, who was stabbed to death by her husband, Ishwar Singh, 46, in the wee hours of Wednesday at their Second Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara house.
Police Headquarters reported that Singh reportedly set the house on fire after committing the gruesome act and escaped with burns on his body. He sought medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he eventually died at around 10:10 hrs.
According to the police report, the couple’s 24-year-old daughter, who works as a security guard, was present in the house at the time of the incident. She reported that her father is an alcoholic who usually beats her mother and had threatened to kill her in the past.
The young woman said that her mother’s screams woke her up, and then she felt heat in the house; she immediately got up, opened the southern door of the house, and escaped.
She claimed that the fire started on a ‘sofa chair’ and spread to the rest of the house; she also saw when her father exited the house through the northern door of the lower flat.
The Fire Service was immediately informed, and they responded and extinguished the fire. The upper flat of the house was damaged, while the lower flat was partly burnt.
The dead woman was found lying on a sponge mattress in her bedroom with a stab wound to the left side of her neck, with what appeared to be blood stains on her clothing and on the bed.
“The victim’s body did not receive ‘burn marks’, nor the mattress,” the police release noted.
According to the report, the suspect was taken to the public hospital by relatives. The investigation is ongoing.
