A stoppage-time goal from Germaine Garrette sealed a 2-1 victory for Guyana over Cuba in their final scheduled group fixture at the CONCACAF Boys’ U-15 Championship.

The win, which came after an opening goal from Mark Glasgow, capped off a resilient performance from the young Guyanese side in Aruba.

Guyana took the lead in the 22nd minute when Glasgow found the back of the net. Garrette emerged as the hero in the second minute of first-half stoppage time to give Guyana a lead they would not relinquish.

This win marks Guyana’s second consecutive victory in the tournament.

The team showed remarkable spirit to rebound after a difficult start, which saw them suffer a 5-0 defeat to group winners Puerto Rico in their opening match.

On Wednesday, they bounced back with a convincing 3-1 win over the Cayman Islands before securing this final victory against Cuba.

While the two consecutive wins showed the team’s fighting spirit, it was not enough to secure the top spot in the group.

As the four group winners from League B will advance to the semifinals, Guyana will now prepare for one final placement match to determine their overall standing in the competition.

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) calls on the general public to be vigilant against the proliferation of fake news and misinformation surrounding the upcoming General and Regional Elections scheduled for September 1, 2025.  

As GECOM diligently implements its work plan for the conduct of these crucial elections, a concerning trend of false narratives has emerged across traditional and social media platforms, threatening to undermine public trust and the integrity of the electoral process. 

GECOM emphasizes the critical importance of the general public being fully informed about the harmful nature of fake news. Such disinformation campaigns can sow confusion, erode confidence in democratic institutions, and potentially deter voter participation. 

The Commission urges all stakeholders, including voters, political parties, civil society organizations, and media outlets to recognize GECOM as the sole credible source of authentic information regarding the electoral process. 

To combat the spread of misinformation, GECOM will continue to proactively disseminate accurate and timely information through its official channels. These include the GECOM website, www.gecom.org.gy, official press releases, and verified social media accounts. Accordingly, the public is strongly advised to cross-reference any election-related information with GECOM’s official statements before sharing it. GECOM is committed to ensuring a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.  

The Commission appeals to all Guyanese citizens to exercise critical thinking and verify information from reliable sources. By working together, we can safeguard the integrity of our democratic process and ensure that the September 1, 2025, General and Regional Elections reflect the true will of the Guyanese people.

Guyana’s top junior badminton players are set to represent the nation in a pair of international competitions this month.

A team will first travel to Paraguay before traveling to Barbados for a second tournament.

A team of four will compete at the Junior Pan American Games in Asunción, Paraguay, from August 10 -13.

The squad includes Frank Waddell, Jonathan Debidin, Mishka Beharry, and Leshaunte Berkley, who will all feature in the Singles and Mixed Doubles events.

National Senior Men’s Champion Akili Haynes will be the team’s player-coach and manager.

Following the conclusion of the Pan Am Games, Haynes and the team will travel to Bridgetown, Barbados, where they will be joined by Ruel Rambiriche for the CAREBACO Junior Team Tournament from 14 to 17 August.

Frank Waddell will not participate in this competition due to age restrictions.

In Barbados, the Guyanese team will face regional opponents in the Mixed Team Event, which has five categories: boys’ Singles, Girls’ Singles, Boys’ Doubles, Girls’ Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.

The CAREBACO Individual Championships will follow from August 19-23, with another strong contingent joining the squad.

Nkosi Beaton coaches the new additions, who include Yonneil Benjamin, Christopher Jordan, Joel Rambiriche, Anjaneysa Godette, and Liam Brumell. They will all compete in the U11 to U19 age categories.

The national Under-17 two-day warm-up match between Ramdehol XI and Ram XI concluded in a draw on Tuesday at the La Bonne Intention Ground, but it was not without some notable individual performances.

National batsman Shamar Apple of Ramdehol XI stole the show with a blistering half-century and sharp work behind the stumps, earning him the Player-of-the-Match award.

Batting first after winning the toss, Ramdehol XI posted a respectable 232. Richard Ramdehol anchored the innings with a patient 97 off 175 balls, while opener Parmeshwar Ram contributed a solid 41.

Ram XI’s bowling was led by leg-spinner Navindra Sankar, who claimed 4 for 58, and was ably supported by pacer Shane Prince, who bagged 3 for 24.

In reply, Ram XI surpassed their opponents’ total, piling 327.

The innings was highlighted by a fluent 91 from the 13-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Lomar Seecharran, who continues to impress after scoring 95 in the recent regional Under-15 tournament. Dhanesh Persaud added a gritty 67.

Ramdehol XI’s bowlers fought back late, with off-spinner Romario Ramdehol taking 4 for 26 and Gibran Yacoob chipping in with 3 for 37.

Ramdehol XI declared their second innings at 222 for 4 in 36.5 overs.

Apple’s fantastic display made the aggressive declaration possible. He stole the spotlight with a rapid 69 off 50 balls, an innings that included four fours and four sixes.

He also put on an impressive wicketkeeping performance, executing two sharp stumpings. Adrian Hetmyer also boosted the scoring with an unbeaten 58.

The match, a final preparatory fixture for the national Under-17 squad ahead of the upcoming regional tournament, was designed to fine-tune form and sharpen game awareness.

A second warm-up match will begin on Thursday at the same venue.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Regional Under-17 Tournament is scheduled to take place in Trinidad and Tobago from August 11 to September 2.

Though the United States (US) could require bonds of up to US$15,000 for some tourist and business visas soon, the country’s Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot, said Guyanese won’t have to pay that.

“Currently, Guyana is not included on that list; it does not apply to Guyanese applying for a visa,” Theriot said on the sidelines of an event on Wednesday.

Recently, it was reported that the US would be launching a pilot programme as part of efforts to

crack down on visitors who overstay their visas.

The program gives U.S. consular officers the discretion to impose bonds on visitors from countries with high rates of visa overstays, according to a Federal Register notice. Bonds could also be applied to people coming from countries where screening and vetting information is deemed insufficient, the notice said.

President Donald Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a focus of his presidency, boosting resources to secure the border and arresting people in the U.S. illegally.

While unsure of current numbers, Theriot said Guyana’s overstay rate is not high. As such, the country is not on the list of nations to be affected by this new programme.
