President of the Guyana Cricket Board, Director of Cricket West Indies and businessman Bissoondyal Singh has endorsed President Irfaan Ali for a second term.

Delivering remarks at the Berbice Cricket Board’s annual awards ceremony, Singh told the gathering at the St. Francis Community Developers in Rose Hall Town: “It is with absolute conviction and unwavering confidence- that I as President of the Guyana Cricket Board and I speak on behalf of its entire membership- hereby publicly and wholeheartedly endorse the leadership and presidency of H.E Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and that of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic.”

Singh hailed President Ali’s vision in transforming and modernising Guyana and praised the Head-of-State for his role in catapulting the country on the global stage.

Earlier this month, the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club became the first sport association to publicly endorse President Ali for a second term, citing transformative support for motorsport development in Guyana.

But having said all the above, let us not lose focus on what or who has created the environment and the pathway for sustainable and continuous advancement of sport across Guyana.

And while he may not be on the list of awardees for tonight’s event, he is, without a doubt, the greatest contributor to this sport over the past five years.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we must not forget this man, a great human being!

This is a man in every step he has taken, he has walked with purpose, in every decision, he has considered the people and in every chapter of his journey, he has written a story of service, honour, and grace.

He is the architect of the transformation and modernising of this country.

Has played a pivotal role in catapulting Guyana on the global stage to the extent that we are now the fastest growing economy per capita in the world.

He leads with vision, courage, and firm resolve. But more importantly, he leads with heart.

He inspires trust, cultivates unity, and brings out the best in those around him. Under his guidance, teams flourish, communities grow stronger, and lives are forever changed.

When he assumed office five years ago, he brought with him a dynamic vision for inclusive development- a Guyana where every child, regardless of background, could dream big, and where sports would no longer be a recreational afterthought, but a pillar of national pride and unity.

If I were to list his achievements, it probably will take me forever.

Ladies and Gentlemen, at this moment, I invite all of you to please rise.

Let us stand together- in unity and with gratitude- as we recognise and thank an exceptional leader.

A man whose service, vision, and compassion have inspired a nation.

Road Warriors have been crowned champions of the inaugural MCYS/Ansa McAL June Madness Futsal Championship, defeating Guyana’s top side, Sparta Boss, in a captivating final at a sold-out Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Sunday morning.

Lady Canaimas also secured the women’s title, continuing their dominance in female futsal.

The championship match, witnessed by dignitaries including Public Works Minister  Juan Edghill, Culture, Youth and Sport Minister  Charles Ramson Jr., and Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, saw the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall erupt with excitement from start to finish.

The Brazilian Road Warriors, who started the tournament with 48 teams, secured the men’s title and a $2 million prize.

They also swept the individual awards, with Wendrecky DeSouza named Most Valuable Player, Luis DaSilva taking Highest Goal Scorer with 10 goals, and John Vieira earning Best Goalkeeper.

In the final, Road Warriors showcased resilience and tactical prowess, nullifying Sparta Boss’s potent attack.

Despite falling to Sparta Boss in the semi-finals of the national championships earlier this year, the Brazilian outfit made no mistakes this time.

Sparta Boss’s leading scorer, Curtez Kellman, was tightly marked, and while Ryan ‘Bum Bum’ Hackett managed to score both of their goals (24th, 37th minute), he was largely contained by the Road Warriors’ defence.

Road Warriors’ goals came from Thalyson Pinheiro (6th minute), Luis DaSilva (10th minute), Joao DeSouza (28th minute), and a fabulous right-footed strike from Samuel Harrinandan (33rd minute), capping a fantastic undefeated run for the team.

Lady Canaimas dominate women’s final

Lady Canaimas continued their impressive form in the women’s final, trouncing Iconic Strikers 5-0.

Glendy Lewis (1st, 20th), Sandra Johnson (2nd, 10th), and Niomi Williams (12th) were all on target, securing the $200,000 top prize.

Iconic Strikers received $100,000 as runners-up.

Third-place playoff

The third-place match saw Back Circle ‘A’ comfortably defeat Gold Is Money 8-5, securing the $400,000 prize. Gold Is Money took home $200,000.

More than a month after he was intercepted and subsequently charged, Olrick Fingal was granted $750,000 bail for a drug trafficking charge.

Magistrate Fabayo Azore granted Fingal bail on Monday when he made this second court appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Fingal was charged with having 3.8 kilogrammes of cannabis in his possession for trafficking on May 19.

The offence was committed on May 16 at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

He had denied the allegation and was remanded to prison.

On Tuesday, when the case was called again, Attorney Bernard DaSilva made a bail application, which was granted.

The case was adjourned to October 14 for the commencement of a trial.

The Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU), in a statement, had said ranks acting on information received conducted an operation in the vicinity of the Royal Hotel on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

In doing this, Fingal was intercepted. A search was conducted, and eight parcels containing a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis, a CZ pistol, and 19 rounds of live ammunition were found in Fingal’s possession.

Fingal was never charged concerning firearm and ammunition possession.

Following the interaction, Fingal was taken to CANU headquarters, where an investigation was conducted, followed by the charge being laid.

A second ferry will begin servicing the Parika to Supenaam Essequibo route by September, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced on Saturday.

President Ali made the announcement while addressing thousands of people attending the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) mega concert at the Anna Regina car park.

The contract for the new ferry has already been signed, he said.

“My friends, the years ahead are filled with opportunities for Essequibo,” the president stated. “When the PPP guarantees you, you know it will be done.”

The additional ferry service will play a crucial role in connecting communities, businesses and industries in Region Two to those in Region Three and beyond.

Another ferry service will also improve transportation, reduce congestion, and support regional trade and food distribution.

To further advance the region’s agricultural sector, the president also revealed that the design for two state-of-the-art rice storage facilities has been completed.

The government intends to develop a rice stabilisation mechanism that will guarantee farmers more success in the industry in its next term.

President Ali said that farmers have a great future ahead, as the government will establish a co-investment development fund to enable them, small business owners, and those in the manufacturing industries to easily access financing, thereby creating wealth transfer at the community, regional, and individual levels.

Region Two has an extraordinary future with several major projects underway, including the construction of a modern Lima Regional Hospital and a nursing school.

The government is also serious about establishing a medical school branch in the same area.

He reaffirmed that the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) is the only political party that represents national unity, love, development, and the well-being of all Guyanese. While it has not officially launched its campaign, the president believes the turnout and support thus far reflect the public’s support for a bright future for Guyana under the PPP/C leadership.

“If you care about Guyana and you care about your future, then there is only one choice… the People’s Progressive Party Civic,” the president declared.

Meanwhile, President Ali warned against political promises from the opposition, stating that the PPP/C has already delivered on pensions, salaries, and support for farmers, and will continue to do so with consistency, as proven in the last five years.

The government plans to accelerate progress, promising that what lies ahead will surpass what has already been delivered.

“We are ready to push the gears into overdrive as we confront the next five years. And if you think you are seeing development, you have not seen anything yet. Wait until the next five years, and you will see what Guyana will become,” the head of state declared.

He also addressed concerns about Venezuela’s territorial claims, stating that the PPP/C will continue to diligently defend Guyana’s borders (Department of Public Information)

For the second game in a row in MLC 2025, Shimron Hetmyer took charge of the Seattle Orcas innings at a critical stage and smashed his way through to victory.

He did it off the last ball against MI New York just about 24 hours ago even as he cramped up, but didn’t show any signs of discomfort when he did it again.

This time, against Los Angeles Knight Riders, who were on top at different stages of the game but came unstuck in the end.

The base for Hetmyer had been set by Aaron Jones.

After Josh Brown had been sent back for a two-ball duck by Jason Holder in the first over, Jones and Shayan Jahangir put together 119 for the second wicket in 11.1 overs.

Jahangir’s contribution was 42 from 29 balls, while Jones scored 73 in 38, a strike rate close to 200.

But the innings needed something more if Orcas, after losing their first five games of the season, needed to make it two in two.

That came from Hetmyer, who walked out at No. 5 with 77 still needed in just under eight overs.

Two fours came off Ali Khan in the 14th over. Tanveer Sangha was then sent for two sixes in the 15th, and 48 from 30 balls looked very gettable for Orcas.

There was a little blip as Andre Russell, who had earlier smashed 65 not out from 39 balls, bowled a five-run over, but it was business as usual for Hetmyer after that, as he took two more sixes off Holder in the 17th, and another off Ali Khan in the 18th.

Still, after Russell had bowled an eight-run 19th over, Hetmyer had a bit left to do.

And when the fifth ball of the last over, bowled by Shadley van Schalkwyk, went straight down the ground, it was all done and dusted.

Orcas have now risen from the bottom of the six-team table to No. 4, while Knight Riders have taken their place.

After being asked to bat, Knight Riders stuttered to 41-1 in the powerplay, and then 66-3 at the halfway mark, with none of Andre Fletcher (strike rate 113.04), Unmukt Chand (84.61) and Sherfane Rutherford (125.00) able to get a move on.

Russell, promoted to No. 3 and having reached 15 from 13, took off at that point. With Saif Badar for company, Russell took 16, 15, 10 and 21 runs off the next four overs, and suddenly Knight Riders were in business.

Even after Badar fell for a 21-ball 41, Waqar Salamkheil getting his second wicket of the game, the big-hitting didn’t stop.

In fact, the entry of Rovman Powell made it worse for the Orcas bowlers.

Russell, not as belligerent as he usually is, ended with 65 from 39 balls with six fours and four sixes, but Powell was another story.

All Powell’s four sixes came against medium pace – three off Jasdeep Singh and one off Ayan Desai.

He ended with 43 not out in 21 balls, with two fours to go with four sixes.

Orcas didn’t help themselves with a couple of dropped catches, both off Powell, while captain Sikandar Raza’s decision to not bowl himself and leave the last few overs to Jasdeep and Desai didn’t come off.

Onix Duncan, a young leader within the Alliance For Change (AFC) party, resigned from the party on Saturday, stating that the “Better Must Come” faction has been a failure and that the party no longer champions key values. 

Duncan communicated his resignation to the AFC’s General Secretary, Raphael Trotmen, and President of the Youth For Change, LeShante Marks. 

“The leadership has failed to create a space of genuine inclusion and internal engagement, particularly following the creation of a faction/ group called the ‘Better Must Come,’ this failure is an opportunity squandered for broader unity and reform,” Duncan wrote. 

He also stated that the continued tolerance of disrespectful and homophobic behaviours towards AFC members further eroded the party’s credibility and effectiveness. 

“I remain committed to a political culture rooted in accountability, discipline, and justice, values that the AFC once championed but now struggles to embody,” he said too. 

Earlier this month, Duncan said he endorsed party leader Nigel Hughes for President. Mr. Hughes’ slogan has been “Better Must Come.” 

Duncan joins several other AFC members leaving the party. 

Earlier this month, popular AFC member Juretha Fernandes defected to APNU amid the AFC’s failure to re-enter a coalition agreement with APNU. Two other AFC colleagues, Sherod Duncan and Deonarine Ramsaroop, joined her in crossing parties.

Lando Norris fought off a race-long challenge from McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri to win the Austrian Grand Prix.

Norris’ third victory of the year, leading home a McLaren one-two, reduced his deficit in the championship to the Australian to 15 points heading into the British Grand Prix next weekend.

The McLarens utterly dominated the race – Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took the final podium place 17 seconds behind, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton fourth a further nine behind.

Mercedes’ George Russell was fifth, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was taken out by the other Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli on the first lap and is 61 points off the championship lead.

Italian rookie Antonelli, 18, apologised to Verstappen for the incident and has been given a three-place grid penalty for next weekend’s British Grand Prix for causing a collision.

“It was a perfect result for the team, a one-two is exactly what we want and we did it again so I’m very happy,” said Norris, who added that the battle with Piastri was “a lot of fun and stress”.

Piastri challenged Briton Norris hard in the first stint after passing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, which had split the McLarens in qualifying, at the first corner.

Norris made mistakes in Turns Nine and 10 at the end of lap 10, and that gave Piastri the chance to have a run on him into the following lap.

Piastri briefly took the lead at Turn Three, only for Norris to repass at the next corner.

And Piastri flirted with disaster when he made a late dive down the inside at Turn Four on lap 20, locking up his brakes and narrowly avoiding hitting the back of Norris’ car.

Norris made his first stop at the end of that lap. Piastri waited three further laps before making his, and Norris seemed to be in control through the middle stint.

But after their final stops, which they made one after the other with 17 and 16 laps to go, Piastri began to close in again.

Coming out from his stop four seconds behind, Piastri was within two seconds of Norris with 10 laps to go, and Norris went on the radio to tell his engineer Will Joseph that he “needed some pace – please help”.

Piastri had a scare with six laps to go when he was edged on to the grass on the straight between Turns Three and Four by Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, but was able to continue and keep the pressure on Norris. The Argentine was given a five-second penalty for the incident.

But Norris, despite some damage on his front wing, managed to stabilise the gap and hold on to the chequered flag for a much-needed victory, two weeks after he ended his own Canadian Grand Prix by running into the back of with his team-mate.

Piastri said: “Tried my absolute best but could have done a better job when I just got ahead momentarily but it was a good battle, bit on the edge at times. Probably pushed the limit a bit far but it was a good race and that’s what we were here to do, race each other and try and fight for wins.” (BBC)

Ralph Ramkarran and Timothy Jonas, co-founders of A New and United Guyana (ANUG), resigned from the party on Sunday morning, just after it was announced that the party had joined forces with Azruddin Mohamed’s ‘We Invest in Nationhood’.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Ramkarran said he informed the current party leader, Dr. Mark France, of his decision to resign.

He shared this message sent to Dr. France: “As you know I have not been active in ANUG for about five years now and I have paid no membership dues. I am therefore unclear of my status. In the event that I still remain on the books as a member, I hereby formally tender my resignation.”

When contacted by the News Room, Mr. Ramkarran confirmed his resignation and said it was “because of [ANUG’s] purported association with the WIN party.”

He also shared that he had advised the party leadership against joining forces with the party. Mohamed is a local businessman who has been sanctioned by the United States US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) for gold smuggling and corruption.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jonas also shared his resignation in a Facebook post.

“This serves to inform that today I resigned as a member of A New and United Guyana,” Mr. Jonas wrote on his Facebook page.
