As Guyana prepares for general and regional elections later this year, Chairman of the National Toshao’s Council (NTC), Derrick John has called on Indigenous leaders to exercise their right to vote and to ‘let good sense prevail’ in recognising the noticeable progress being made across their communities.

“We also recognise what we are experiencing. We are, we are not dumb people anymore. We have seen, we have experienced, we have realised, we are benefiting from so much of benefits and resources. And it’s only right that we continue to support this part, this progress, this transformation.

“And I appeal to you, my fellow Indigenous leaders, let us allow good sense to prevail,” John said during his remarks on Day One of the 2025 NTC Conference.

At the same time, he emphasised the importance of political independence.

“We are learned people, we know what is good for us, and nobody, well, should be able to come and tell us who we should vote for. We have the ability to choose,” the NTC Chairman stated.

John further urged that the country prepare to go to the polls, that the various political parties campaign in a “professional way.”

“I hope that as Political Parties and organisations, with the start of their campaign. They do it in a professional way. And the Indigenous peoples have the right to choose whatever political party they want to support.

“And we know, we are not living in the Stone Age anymore, we are living in a modern age where education is accessible from nursery to secondary in all Indigenous communities,” John said.

Meanwhile, John also used the platform to speak on the Guyana/Venezuela border controversy and called on the support of the international community.

“We have seen the reckless threat from our near western neighbor, Venezuela. And I’m calling out here that we need the international community to stand by our side and so that we can allow the legal process to take its course,” he said.

Speaking directly to President Dr Irfaan Ali, the NTC Chairman said: “Guyana is a sovereign nation, and I know that these threats its driving fear in a lot of the communities, especially those are on the border region, Mr. President. And I know that you are very up to date. And I know that you have a plan. We have confidence in your government that you will continue to protect every single Guyanese.”

Two men were arrested after 9.4 kilogrammes of cannabis was found inside a car they were travelling in along Vlissengen Road, Georgetown.

The discovery was made on Saturday by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU).

In a press release, CANU said its officers, acting on information received, conducted an operation during which they intercepted a motor car.

The vehicle was searched and several parcels containing a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis were unearthed.

Two men, who were in the car, were arrested.

They were escorted to CANU Headquarters, where the cannabis was tested and weighed.

Investigations are ongoing.

According to a press release from the team, a new chapter in Guyanese motorsport is set to be written as the Trans Racing Team prepares to become the first independent entry from the South American nation to compete on the international drag racing stage.

The team has announced a pioneering race schedule in Guyana, Trinidad, and Suriname.

This marks a significant step for local competitors aiming for regional recognition.

The press release states, “Trans Racing Team is undertaking this ambitious programme without the backing of the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC).”

Instead, their foray into international competition is being solely funded by Trans Pacific Motor Spares & Auto Sales Inc., a move the company says underscores the private sector’s belief in the potential of Guyanese motorsport.

A spokesperson for Trans Pacific Motor Spares & Auto Sales Inc. commented: “Trans Pacific Motor Spares & Auto Sales Inc. is honoured to be the sole sponsor behind this historic moment. The team sees their participation as more than just competing; it is about demonstrating what can be achieved through passion and purpose, even without traditional institutional support.

Their international campaign commenced on Sunday with an appearance at the GMR&SC’s Endurance Meet, where they contested the Vitz Cup Group.

 Following this, they will travel to Trinidad for the Wallerfield Cup Finals on May 24-25, before returning to Guyana for the 1320 Heat Drag Racing Event on June 1. The international circuit will conclude with a final event in Suriname.

The team is making arrangements to transport their competition vehicles to each venue before the race dates, which will be logistically challenging.

Ruimveldt Sports Club delivered a commanding performance to defeat Peter’s Hall Sports Club by a comprehensive 139 runs and secure their spot in the final of the East Bank Demerara Cricket Association 40-over tournament, sponsored by D&R Construction and Machinery Rental.

The dominant semi-final victory at Farm Ground ensures Ruimveldt will face Herstelling ‘A’ in the tournament decider.

Asked to bat first, Ruimveldt posted a formidable total of 272 for 7 in their allotted 40 overs.

Their innings was built on a series of valuable contributions from their middle order after a somewhat shaky start.

Jeremiah Scott top-scored with a well-compiled 59, providing a solid foundation. He was ably supported by Deonarine Seegobin (44) and Rickey Sargeant (40), both of whom played crucial roles in accelerating the scoring.

Late impetus was provided by an unbeaten cameo of 34 from Danny Narayan and a quickfire 34 from Rovaldo Pereira, pushing the total beyond Peter’s Hall reach.

Peter’s Hall bowlers found it tough going for the most part. Ryan Seecharan was the most successful, claiming two wickets for 51 runs.

Yogendra Singh also picked up two wickets but conceded 56 runs.

Chasing a challenging target of 273, Peter’s Hall innings never got going.

They struggled to build partnerships and lost wickets at regular intervals. Only Ryan Seecharan (24), Dwayne Graham (22), and Shameer Fazal (20) managed to offered some fight against a disciplined Ruimveldt bowling attack.

Peter’s Hall eventually got bundled out for just 133 in 27.3 overs, well short of the target.

Ruimveldt’s bowlers were incisive and shared the wickets effectively.

Sameer Hussain was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets for just 24 runs.

Rovaldo Pereira capped off a satisfactory all-round performance by taking two wickets for one run.

Rickey Sargeant followed up his valuable contribution with the bat by snagging two wickets for 31 runs, while Ntini Permaul also chipped in with two for 37 runs.

Barbados produced a commanding performance to defeat Guyana 43-5 in a Rugby Americas North (RAN) match at Garrison Savannah in Bridgetown on Saturday.

The home side was in rampant form against the Green Machine, a Guyana team that struggled to find its rhythm.

This result marks a disappointing follow-up for Guyana, who were also heavily beaten 48-17 by the Cayman Islands in their previous outing in April.

Barbados’ comprehensive victory goes against the recent historical trend between the two nations.

Guyana had emerged victorious in six of their last seven official test matches against Barbados heading into this encounter.

The match was part of a series of regional RAN fixtures throughout 2025.

Alongside Barbados and Guyana, other RAN teams competing in capped matches this year include the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Mexico, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Looking ahead, the RAN structure is set to be revamped for 2026, introducing a three-tier system.

This new structure will integrate the region into the Rugby World Cup 2027 qualification pathway.

Currently, only RAN members Canada and the USA are involved in the Rugby World Cup 2027 qualification process, and they are scheduled to compete in the Pacific Nations Cup later this year.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Sunday issued a statement condemning what it said were “unpatriotic efforts” of some persons involved in sharing Venezuelan propaganda.

This release comes amid rising tensions between Guyana and Venezuela as the Spanish-speaking nation forges ahead with elections for the Essequibo region, internationally recognised as Guyana’s. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) unanimously reaffirmed provisional measures granted in December 2023 and told Venezuela that it shall refrain from conducting, or preparing to conduct, elections in the Essequibo region.

The Government of Guyana has noted the unpatriotic and sustained efforts of some in spreading Venezuelan propaganda; some of which is dated, some not related to Guyana and some totally fabricated.

Colombian Matteo Garcia delivered a sublime performance at the 42nd National Sports Commission’s Independence Three-Stage Cycle Race, completing a rare clean sweep of all three stages to claim the overall title emphatically.

Garcia was simply in a class of his own over approximately 160 miles of racing.

He demonstrated a devastating mix of speed and endurance that left his rivals trailing.

His flawless execution over the three days culminated in a dominant general classification victory with a combined time of six hours, 18 minutes, and 47 seconds (6:18:47s).

This commanding performance earned him the coveted winner’s crown and a purse of G$160,000.

Further underscoring Garcia’s supremacy was the performance of his Team Raiders teammate, Jadian Neaves.

The Trinidadian rider secured the second spot overall, finishing over five minutes adrift with a total time of 6:24:00s, highlighting the strength of the Team Raiders contingent.

Guyanese rider Robin Persaud, competing in the Masters (35-50) category, showed remarkable consistency to secure a commendable third place in the general classification, clocking in at 6:29:29s.

Aaron Newton, Adam Alexander, and Paul DeNobrega rounded out the top six in the overall standings.

Garcia’s clean sweep remarkably mirrors the achievement of Guyana’s own Briton John in the 2024 edition of the race.

John, who did not participate this year, had also won all three stages on his way to the title.

The final stage, a challenging circuit race in Providence covering approximately 55 miles, saw Garcia once again cross the line first.

He stopped the clock at 2:16:43.00s, finishing 27.07 seconds ahead of Janian Neaves.

Continental Cycling’s Paul DeNobrega secured third place on the stage at 2:25:05.00.

Alex Newton of KFC Evolution emerged victorious in the Junior category, narrowly edging out Alexander Leung of Continental Cycling.

Newton’s winning time over the three stages was 6:34:31s, just two seconds faster than Leung’s 6:34:33s in a tightly contested junior race.

Stage by Stage Recap:

The tone for Garcia’s dominance was set in the opening 45-mile stage from Corriverton to New Amsterdam.

He won in one hour, 41 minutes, and 28 seconds (1:41:28s).

Local favourite Aaron Newton (KFC Evolution) pushed him hard all the way, finishing a mere three seconds behind in a thrilling sprint finish, recording a time of 1:41.31.

Adam Alexander, also representing Team Raiders, secured third place in 1:42.17.

Curtis Dey, Robin Persaud, and Jadian Neaves completed the top six in the stage.

Garcia continued his imperious form in the second stage, a demanding 62-mile journey from D’Edward Village to Liliendaal. He once again proved too strong for his rivals, crossing the finish line in two hours, twenty minutes, and 36 seconds (2:20:36s).

Robin Persaud finished second in this stage, demonstrating his enduring class, four seconds behind Garcia in 2:20:40.

The event, solely organised by the National Sports Commission, was lauded by the Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle.

He applauded the cyclists’ performances and reiterated the NSC’s commitment to supporting the sport’s progression in Guyana.

Sunday, May 18, 2205: Flight operations at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) has resumed following a fire incident earlier today in the check-in area.

The incident, which originated with a burning air conditioning unit, triggered the immediate activation of the airport’s emergency response plan.

Passengers and airport staff were safely evacuated from the terminal.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS), quickly brought the fire under control,
preventing further damage. The airport’s emergency systems, including
fire alarms, emergency lighting, and fire shutter doors, functioned as designed and were automatically deployed.

Electrical fire contained at Cheddi Jagan Int’l Airport 

The incident caused minor disruptions to the Caribbean Airlines (CAL)
and Suriname Airways (SLM) outbound flights.

The Guyana Fire Service is currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the precise cause of the fire.

The safety and security of our passengers and staff remain our top priority. We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the traveling

public during this incident and thank all responding agencies for their
