Following the excitement of BBL|14, the Hobart Hurricanes XI will compete in the Global Super League this July.

From 10 – 18 July 2025 in Guyana, the Hobart Hurricanes XI will compete in this T20 tournament against four other teams from around the globe, aiming to become the champions of the second iteration of the GSL.

The timing of the tournament in the Caribbean allows the Hurricanes to send a strong team to the GSL as it is being played during the Australian domestic offseason and starts after the Major League Cricket T20 competition in the United States.

Hobart will become the second Australian team to play in this tournament, after Cricket Victoria finished second in last year’s competition, losing to Bangladeshi side the Rangpur Riders.

Cricket Tasmania High Performance General Manager, Salliann Beams, is pleased to see the Hobart Hurricanes XI competing in this newly developed competition.

“The Guyana Global Super League provides our male playing group with another competition with real stakes to help prepare themselves for the rigours of the Australian domestic summer while continuing to develop their white-ball skills.

“With the international cricket calendar becoming increasingly more competitive, to be able to send a team to an overseas tournament in different conditions, against different opposition, will give our athletes a chance to test themselves further.

“Our squad, while not public yet, will have a good blend of top-end talent and provide playing opportunities to players who we view as important aspects of our organisation in the coming years,” said Beams.

The announcement of the Hobart Hurricanes XI squad for the GSL in Guyana will be shared later this month.

The Global Super League is an annual T20 cricket tournament hosted in Guyana, bringing together teams from top cricketing nations.

The 2025 tournament will feature five teams competing in 11 thrilling matches, all held at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, from 10 to 18 July 2025.

With a focus on delivering high-quality cricket and unforgettable fan experiences, the GSL aims to promote the sport while enhancing Guyana’s reputation on the global stage. (GSLT20)

The Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) is sending a team of Under-23 players and a coach to Paraguay for a high-performance 3×3 training camp from June 9 to 13.

This opportunity is made possible through the Guyana Olympic Association’s (GOA) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, which was signed in preparation for the Junior Pan Am Games in Asunción from August 9 to 23.

The selected players are Stephen George, Anish Ramlall, Domitre Ranking, and Arren Vanlewin.

Willon Cameron, a physical education teacher at President’s College with a degree in Sports Coaching from the University of the West Indies and a FIBA Level 2 certification, will coach the team.

Cameron is known for leading the Colts Basketball Club to consecutive national titles.

The players selected are:

• Arren Vanlewin: A 19-year-old from Kwakwani, who plays for Untouchables and has represented Guyana at the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG).
• Anish Ramlall: A 19-year-old student-athlete at St. Cloud State University, who the GBF says has consistently demonstrated commitment.
• Stephen George: An 18-year-old player for Amelia’s Ward Jets, seen by the GBF as a promising talent for the future.
• Domitre Ranking: A 19-year-old player for Colts Basketball Club, who the GBF is actively supporting for development into the senior national program.

“The GBF welcomes the opportunity to expose our young players to a format of the game that is a high priority in our vision for basketball in Guyana,” said GBF President Michael Singh in a statement.

Singh also expressed confidence in Coach Cameron, stating, “We also welcome the opportunity to expose our coaches, and Coach Cameron is a worthy candidate. He has taken deliberate steps to become qualified, and his work at the youth level, especially at President’s College, speaks for itself.”

The GBF thanked the GOA for the collaboration and expressed its anticipation for continued cooperation to develop all formats of basketball in Guyana.

Milton Robert Pydana, the Guyanese wicketkeeper who represented the West Indies in One-Day Internationals, will be buried in Guyana on Monday, May 12, 2025.

Pydana passed away in the United States on April 15, 2025, and will be laid to rest in his homeland, as per his request.

He passed at age 75.

Pydana was born in Berbice on January 27, 1950, and was widely known as ‘Golden Gloves Man’. Cricket West Indies and the Guyana Cricket Board have paid tribute to his contributions.

A night of reflection will be held at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground, Queenstown, on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 17:30 hrs.

Attendees are expected to share memories of Pydana’s playing career.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 12, 2025, at the Central Assembly of God Church in Cummingsburg, Georgetown.

The viewing will take place from 13:00hrs, followed by the service at 14:00hrs.

Pydana will be buried at Bel Air Cemetery, and a reception will follow the burial at DCC Ground.

Pydana’s career coincided with a golden era of West Indies cricket, making it challenging to break into the side, particularly with the presence of the outstanding Jeff Dujon.

He played three ODIs for the West Indies, getting to bat only once, scoring two runs off three deliveries.

His first two ODIs were during the 1980 tour of Pakistan, where he took catches to dismiss Javed Miandad off the bowling of Colin Croft and Viv Richards.

His final ODI appearance came in India three years later. In the fifth and final ODI in Guwahati, he took a catch but did not bat as the West Indies chased down 183 in a shortened match.

Pydana served as understudy to Dujon for several years, during which time he played 85 first-class matches and 27 List A games until 1987-88, primarily for Guyana, and also represented Berbice in domestic cricket.

In 2014, he was named one of the two assistant coaches of the USA’s national side.

Shubman Gill has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Rohit Sharma as the full-time Test captain starting with India’s Test tour of England, a five-Test series starting on June 20 at Headingley.

It is understood that Gill’s ascension has become inevitable after it became apparent that Jasprit Bumrah, who was the vice-captain of the Test team on India’s Test tour of Australia and led the team in the two Tests Rohit missed, is likely to miss a few Tests in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for workload management.

The squad is expected to be picked when the selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, meets later this month.

With that series kicking off the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for India, it is understood that the selectors want a captain with a long-term view in mind, making Gill, 25, the preferred option.

The question of Rohit’s successor in the Test side cropped up once he announced his decision to retire from the format on Wednesday.

Bumrah is the designated vice-captain of the Test team, and led in two of the five Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, in December 2024 and January 2025, when Rohit had missed out – he was at home for the birth of his child for the first Test of the series, and “stood down” for the last.

But ESPNcricinfo understands that Bumrah’s workload as the all-format spearhead of India’s fast-bowling attack as well as the fact that he has only recently returned from a stress-related discomfort in his lower back – picked up during that final Test in Australia – after missing the initial few matches of IPL 2025, has been a concern for the team management and selectors.

Gill has never led in Test matches or ODIs, but has led the team in five T20Is, all on a tour of Zimbabwe in mid-2024 when he was named captain of a side that missed several first-choice players following India’s victory in the preceding T20 World Cup.

That Gill was being groomed for the top job has been mentioned in various circles over the past few months, and his performance as batter and captain of Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing IPL season has been impressive.

Gill took over the leadership of the team in 2024 after Hardik Pandya, who had led them to the title in their maiden season (2022) and the final the following year, left to rejoin Mumbai Indians (MI). IPL 2024 didn’t go well for GT, but they have been one of the best performing teams this season.

Gill has been a regular in the India Test team since making his debut in Melbourne in December 2020, when he scored 45 and 35 not out against a full-strength Australia bowling attack in a Test India won by eight wickets under Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy.

The Central Stags will represent New Zealand in the 2025 ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL), marking the team’s first international campaign in 15 years.

Following a dominant domestic season, the Central Stags enter the GSL as the reigning champions of New Zealand’s 2024/25 Super Smash.

Topping the regular season table, the Stags showcased their class in the final, beating a star-laden Canterbury Kings side to secure their fourth national T20 title.

Led by experienced skipper Tom Bruce, who was named New Zealand Cricket’s Men’s Super Smash Player of the Year, the Stags come into the GSL on the back of an excellent campaign last season.

Bruce’s explosive 157.67 strike rate underscored his value, while strike bowler Blair Tickner claimed the most wickets in the competition, averaging just 19.13 with the ball.

The squad will draw on a rich talent pool from New Zealand’s central provinces that have been a proven breeding ground for international stars.

Several Stags have gone on to represent the BLACKCAPS, including Tom Bruce, Dane Cleaver, Blair Tickner, Will Young, Josh Clarkson, and Ajaz Patel — with many of these expected to feature in a strong lineup at the GSL.

This marks the Stags’ first overseas team appearance since the 2010/11 Champions League, a moment that holds special significance as Central Districts Cricket celebrates its 75th jubilee season.

Golden Spring Supermarket, a Chinese supermarket located at Number 65 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was targeted by armed bandits late Tuesday night.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that customers inside the store were also victims of the robbery.

The News Room understands that the assailants made off with an undisclosed sum of cash and various items from the owner.

After robbing the supermarket, the bandits reportedly stole a customer’s car before making their escape.

Police ranks were informed of the crime and went to the scene shortly after.

The Golden Spring Supermarket has only been operating for a few months and is now facing the aftermath of this brazen crime.

An investigation is currently underway.

“We couldn’t have found a better charge,” Attorney General Anil Nandlall declared Tuesday night, defending the police decision to lay terrorism charges against scores of Guyanese recently arrested for unrest following the death of Adriana Younge.

Dozens of individuals across the country have been charged and remanded under Section 309(A) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act — a section amended to address acts intended to “strike terror” in the public.

The charges stem from widespread violence, including the burning of tyres on public roads, robberies, and the looting of Chinese-owned supermarkets.

Public disturbances reportedly involved individuals arming themselves with cutlasses, assaulting and robbing commuters — even targeting homeless persons — and damaging public and private property.

“I want to say to those who say (it is) the wrong charge… I want to say that (they) couldn’t find a better charge.

“This is not excessive,” the Attorney General said.

“When you light the road afire, rob supermarkets, and walk the streets with weapons, that is striking terror. That is exactly what the law was designed to address.”

The legislation, originally strengthened following the deadly 2002 crime wave, criminalises any act done “by any means whatsoever” with the intent to cause fear, injury, death, or property damage.

Nandlall dismissed criticism that the charges were too harsh, insisting that the nature of the events left authorities with no softer alternative.

“These were not peaceful protests,” he said. “They were orchestrated attempts to reign terror across the land. The law was appropriately applied.”

The individuals charged remain in custody as investigations and court proceedings continue.

A 69-year-old handyman was found dead in the pool at the Toucan Mall, located at Toucan Drive, Amelia’s Ward, Linden, on Tuesday.

Dead is Henry Gardner, who resided at the Toucan Mall.

The man’s body was found in the pool on Tuesday morning. Preliminary inquiries revealed that at about 20:00 hrs Monday, Gardner and the 67-year-old owner of the mall conducted routine checks around the premises.

The owner claimed he left the deceased at the pool area. At about 07:20 hrs on Tuesday, Gardner was discovered in the pool. The matter was then reported to the Police.

The man’s body was removed from the pool and examined; no marks of violence were seen on the exposed parts of his body. The body is presently at the Pensioner Funeral home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
