Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has again rejected claims of political victimisation by businessman Azruddin Mohamed, saying the billionaire and his associates are trying to cast themselves as victims only because they are no longer able to act with impunity.

“You (the Mohameds) are not law enforcement,” Jagdeo said, as he referenced a recent case in which a drone operator claimed he was accosted by individuals linked to Mohamed’s operations while filming near a property on the East Bank Demerara.

Azruddin Mohamed, in a Facebook video responding to Jagdeo, said he did call the Police but did not deny that he and his employees went after the drone operator, accusing him of breaking the law.

“It’s their way of operating, bullying people, because they believe they have money,” Jagdeo stated.

Azrudin Mohamed also objected to Jagdeo calling his workers “thugs” but history has shown the dealings of the Mohameds.

Back in 2010, three security guards who worked for the family gave chilling details of being tortured when they were accused of stealing a quantity of items from Mohamed Enterprises on Lombard Street where they worked.

“Security supervisor, 63-year-old Bansgopaul Sookhraj of Lot 10 Camp Street along with Imtiaz Bacchus of Albouys Street, Albouystown and Ousman Boodhoo Sahadeo, age 59, of Middle Road said they were repeatedly struck with a baseball bat, had soapy water poured into their mouths and were gagged and bound with scotch tape before being threatened not to report the matter. The men alleged that they were brutalized by four or five persons, one after the other,” the Stabroek News had reported on November 24, 2010.

Back in 2010, three security guards who worked for the family gave chilling details of being tortured when they were accused of stealing a quantity of items from Mohamed Enterprises on Lombard Street where they worked.

Stabroek News quoted Azrudin,  Nazar Mohamed’s son, as saying the men were “drunkards” and were fired after it was discovered that fire extinguishers, a trolley, 15 gallon of diesel, gas bottles and other items were stolen.  The senior Mohamed, Nazar, had admitted the beating and torturing of three security guards did occur. He also apologized publicly for the incident.

Jagdeo stated that because the PPP government is not defending the illegality of the Mohameds they are claiming victimisation.

“It’s the inability to act with impunity that hurts them a lot,” Jagdeo declared.

The Mohameds have been sanctioned by the United States.

“We have no obligation to defend his illegality,” Jagdeo stated of Azrudin Mohamed.

Days after fatal Police shootings in Linden, a team of investigators from the Regional Security System (RSS) have arrived in Guyana to assist local authorities with the investigation into the incidents.

They are investigating the killings of Ronaldo Peters and Keon Fogenay.

The team’s arrival is in keeping with an assurance made by President Dr Irfaan Ali.

Police Headquarters on Saturday said the RSS team visited Linden as part of the investigations. They were accompanied by a team of investigators from the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).

The RSS team met and interacted with the victims families and the scenes of the shootings.

Peters, 21, was shot and killed by a Police Sergeant around 17:30hrs on April 7 in Linden.

Police, acting on information received went to Shabba bar in One Mile, Linden in search for Peters, who they said was wanted for rape.

The shooting was captured on CCTV footage which shows that Peters was standing by the roadside in the company of a group of men, who were sitting. A heavily-tinted minibus then approached and men in white t-shirt and black pants emerged. Peters is seen fleeing from the scene and the policemen from the minibus chased after him. Seconds later, a policeman is seen dragging Peters by the neck and taking him to the vehicle.

Police Headquarters claimed that Peters was wanted for a rape that occurred sometime between 1st December 2024 and 31st January 2025. Peter’s aunt whom he lived with, identified as Mary Benjamin, confirmed that the Police had contacted her seeking Peter’s whereabouts for questioning, but she didn’t turn him in to the Police and neither did he surrender to Police.

The ranks went to the location armed with service weapons. Police headquarters claimed the ranks “were fully dressed in uniform,” but the CCTV footage shows they were not.

Meanwhile, Fogenay, was killed when protests erupted in the town on Tuesday, April 8.

President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Bissoondyal Singh, met with the national Under-15 team during their encampment this week, offering words of encouragement as the young cricketers prepare to represent Guyana at the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Under-15 Tournament.

The team will depart Guyana on Sunday (April 13), with the tournament bowling off on April 15.

Singh urged the players to uphold discipline, demonstrate sportsmanship, and carry the national pride as they compete against the region’s best.

“As part of his visit, Singh also made a donation of cricket gear to several members of the team, further demonstrating the GCB’s commitment to supporting youth development and ensuring the players are properly equipped for the regional challenge,” the Guyana Cricket Board said in a press release.

The squad features Richard Ramdeholl as captain and Brandon Henry as vice-captain.

The full team includes: Justin Dowlin, Lomar Seecharran, Luke Amsterdam, Shahid Ramzan, Arif Bacchus, Richard Ramdeholl, Nathaniel Ramsammy, Jathniel Nurse, Usain Fredericks, Brandon Henry, Reyaz Latif, Patrice Fraser, Rafeal McKenzie and Prosper Jacobus.

The reserves are: Khush Seegobin, Joshua Thomas, Bomesh Lall, Nathan Bishop, Tameshwar Deonandan abd Tyrese McPherson. Terry Newton will serve as the team’s manager, while Yeuraj Khemraj takes on duties as coach.

The CWI Rising Stars tournament plays a critical role in the development of the region’s young cricketing talent and offers a vital platform for players to showcase their skills.

Team Guyana will be looking to make a strong impact on the regional stage.

Five rounds of 50-over matches will be played from April 15 to 23 at four venues in Antigua, with all games starting 09:30h.

Guyana’s first match is against Trinidad and Tobago on April 15 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, followed by a round two clash against Jamaica at the Antigua Recreation Ground on April 17.

On April 19, Guyana will face Windward Islands at the Antigua Recreation Ground, while on April 21, the Guyanese will be up against Leeward Islands at the same venue.

In the final round, on April 23, Guyana will play against Barbados at the Coolidge Cricket Ground.

Statement by Cricket West Indies

Guyana Harpy Eagles players Veerasammy Permaul, Kevlon Anderson, and Ronaldo Alimohamed have been found guilty of breaching the Cricket West Indies Code of Conduct in the seventh and final round of the West Indies Championship match against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force at Queen’s Park Oval.

Permaul was fined 75 per cent of his match fee for a Level 2 breach of the Cricket West Indies Code of Conduct on day one of the contest.

The spinner breached Article 2.1–2.5; Paragraph 3.8 of the CWI Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “changing the condition of the ball in breach of Law 42.3. of the Laws of Cricket.”

The charge was laid by on-field umpires Christopher Taylor and Kashif Sandy after the end of the first day.

Permaul admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Michael Ragoonath, and as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

Additionally, Kevlon Anderson was fined 90 per cent of his match fee for a similar offence on the third day, during the second innings of the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force.

In each instance the ball was changed, with the batting team given the option to choose.

Meanwhile, Alimohamed was fined 65 per cent of his match fee for also a Level 2 breach of the Cricket West Indies Code of Conduct.

The medium pacer breached Article 2.1–2.5; Paragraph 3.6 of the Code of Conduct – “Throw the ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near player or official in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner.”

Alimohamed initially denied the charge, which carried a fine of 60 per cent, but following a hearing with match referee Ragoonath at the end of the opening day, was found guilty and subsequently received a 65 per cent fine of his match fee.

All Level 2 breaches carry a minimum penalty of a fine of between 50–100 per cent of the applicable match fee and/or a ban of one match and/or two one-day matches.

Opener Abhishek Sharma hit a superb 141 as Sunrisers Hyderabad completed the second-highest chase in Indian Premier League history, making 247-2 to beat Punjab Kings by eight wickets.

In a 55-ball innings, Abhishek hit 14 fours and 10 sixes to make the third-highest individual score in the history of the competition.

The 24-year-old was finally caught at deep mid-wicket off Arshdeep Singh’s 17th over, having put the league’s bottom side in sight of a famous victory.

Kings would have been confident of victory having scored a daunting 245-6, with captain Shreyas Iyer striking 82 from 36 balls.

Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya got their side off to a strong start with an opening partnership of 66, before Iyer added 71 with Nehal Wadhera.

Iyer was the last of four wickets to fall to Harshal Patel (4-42), while Marcus Stoinis muscled an unbeaten 34 from 11 to close the innings.

But Abhishek and Travis Head got Sunrisers off to a flying start in their reply, passing 100 in the eighth over.

Head was finally caught at long-on by Glenn Maxwell off Yuzvendra Chahal for a 37-ball 66, by which time Sunrisers were 171-1 in the 13th over.

Abhishek reached a 40-ball hundred from the final ball of the same over, raising a piece of paper saying “This is for the Orange Army” in acknowledgement of his side’s supporters.

When Abhishek was finally dismissed, his side were 222-2, and Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan guided them home with nine balls to spare.

Lucknow Super Giants beat Indian Premier League leaders Gujarat Titans by six wickets with a 34-ball 61 from tournament leading run-scorer Nicholas Pooran.

Chasing a challenging 181, the West Indies batter struck one four and seven sixes to drive his side towards victory.

By the time he was dismissed, caught by Shahrukh Khan off Rashid Khan, Lucknow were 155-3 and Ayush Badoni finished the match in style with a consecutive four and six in the final over.

Having been put into bat, Sai Sudharsan (56 from 37) and Shubman Gill (60 from 38) got the Titans off to a flying start, striking a 120-run opening partnership.

The pair fell in consecutive overs, Gill caught superbly by Aiden Markram at long-on in the 13th and Sudharasan mishitting Ravi Bishnoi’s delivery to Pooran at cover six balls later.

From that point the visitors’ innings slowed, with Washington Sundar bowled for two to become Bishnoi’s second dismissal of the over, and Jos Buttler caught by a diving Shardul Thakur for 16.

Thakur then removed Sherfane Rutherford and Rahul Tewatia with consecutive deliveries in the final over as the Titans finished on 180-6.

Chase’s Academic Foundation wasted no time in asserting their dominance at the Education Ground, dismantling Bartica Secondary in a ruthless 7-0 victory.

The prolific Isaiah Ifill netted four times (33’, 43’, 50’, 58’) after goals from Neeiaz Baksh (17’), Tyrell Walcott (22’), and Kemron Pellew (31’) had already put the Berbice-based team comfortably ahead.

But late strikes from Seon Grant (58’), Ezekiel Frank David (62’) and Jomal Williams (65’) sealed the victory for Dolphin, who now look to carry their momentum forward.

Waramuri Secondary edged a dramatic 3-2 thriller against South Ruimveldt Secondary at Queen’s College Ground.

The dynamic duo of Denzell Abrams (15’) and Orwin Abrams (68’), along with Erwin Booker (35’), gave Waramuri a narrow lead that held up despite goals from Carlon Robinson (49’) and Devonte Gaime (64’) for South Ruimveldt.

Waramuri now marches into the quarters with confidence.

Day Two of Round of 16 games opened with a surprise as Three Miles Secondary toppled a spirited Abram Zuil Secondary side 2-1.

In the final Round of 16 clash, President’s College edged Santa Rosa Secondary 1-0, courtesy of a 65th-minute finish from Kenan Petrie.

The game was tight throughout, with both teams trading chances before Petrie found the breakthrough that proved decisive.

The quarter-finals are set to kick off on Sunday, April 13, as the final eight teams battle for a spot in the semi-finals of the 11th annual Milo U-18 Schools Football Tournament.

Waramuri Secondary will face Bushlot Secondary in what promises to be a high-octane affair between two attacking sides.

President’s College will take on West Ruimveldt Secondary, a match that pits discipline against experience.

Charlestown Secondary meet the in-form Chase’s Academic Foundation, who have scored a staggering 34 goals in just four matches, making them the most prolific team in the tournament so far.

Two brothers were shot and injured after they allegedly stabbed a security guard of a supermarket during a disagreement over the prices of items on Friday night.

The brothers are Ryan and Randy Narine of La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara.

The security guard is a 25-year-old employee of C.M.C Security Service. He was armed with a shotgun and live cartridges.

He was on duty at the O_GUO Supermarket when the incident occurred at 20:40hrs at Enterprise Railway Embankment, ECD.

Police Headquarters reported that the inquiries revealed that the brothers entered the supermarket to purchase beer and chocolate.  While at the counter, Police said Ryan had a disagreement with the cashier over the price of the items. This caused this security guard to intervene.

“This resulted in a confrontation with the Security Guard, Randy, who was armed with a knife, his brother (Ryan), and another individual known as ‘Boy,” Police Headquarters said.

During the confrontation, Police said Randy allegedly stabbed the security guard in the abdomen.

In retaliation, the security guard discharged two rounds, injuring both Randy and Ryan. They were shot in their legs.

Emergency Medical Technicians from the Melanie Fire Station were summoned, and the brothers were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

The security guard was taken to the said hospital by public-spirited citizens. They were all admitted and are currently in stable condition. Investigations are ongoing.
