Virat Kohli has communicated his desire to retire from Test cricket to the BCCI ahead of the big five-match series in England starting June 20, for which he is expected to be a part of the squad.

ESPNcricinfo understands that Kohli has been having these conversations with officials of the BCCI for the past month or so.

If Kohli doesn’t change his mind, he will bring the curtain down on a glorious career that has spanned 14 years and included 123 Tests – 68 of them as captain – in which he has 9230 runs at an average of 46.85.

But it hasn’t been a particularly fruitful time in the format for Kohli of late. When he scored 100 not out in the Perth Test in November 2024, it was his first century in Tests since July 2023 (against West Indies in Port of Spain), and his average, 55.10 at its peak after he scored his career best of 254 not out vs South Africa in Pune in 2019, has been 32.56 over the last 24 months.

Despite that, it’s understood that the team management and selectors expect his experience to be crucial on the tour, where India will also be playing under a new captain – Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to take over from Rohit Sharma following his retirement from Test cricket earlier this week.

Kohli, as well as Rohit, were included in the highest category (A+) in the latest BCCI contracts, which is usually meant for players who play all three international formats. Both Kohli and Rohit had retired from T20Is after India won the World Cup last year and, if Kohli does retire from Tests, they will only be available for ODI cricket going forward.

Apart from Rohit, India are without R Ashwin, who retired from international cricket during the 2024-25 series in Australia.

With Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane not in the mix at the moment, and Mohammed Shami’s form under scrutiny after his return from a long injury layoff, Kohli is among the only seniors around, along with KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah.

Before Rohit replaced Kohli as India’s Test captain, India had won 40 of the 68 games in which Kohli led, losing just 17.

The 40 wins makes Kohli India’s most successful Test captain of all time – MS Dhoni with 27 from 60 and Sourav Ganguly with 21 from 49 rank below him – and also places him at No. 4 on the overall list of captains with the most Test wins, behind Graeme Smith (53 from 109), Ricky Ponting (48 from 77) and Steve Waugh (41 from 57).

It was in England that Kohli had recorded one of his greatest highs as a Test batter, on the 2018 tour. He was the top run-getter across the two sides in the five Tests, aggregating 583 at an average of 59.30 with two centuries.

That it came after he had scored just 134 runs in ten innings on the previous tour, in 2014, made the performance that much more special. That year, 2018, was also his best in terms of aggregate for a year, when he scored 1322 runs.

During his golden run, he averaged 75.93 in 2016, 75.64 in 2017, 55.08 in 2018, and 68.00 in 2019.

During that period between 2016 and 2018, Kohli scored 3596 runs in 35 Tests at an average of 66.59, with 14 hundreds and eight fifties in 58 innings. (ESPNcricinfo)

European Union Ambassador to Guyana, René van Nes, once again expressed the EU’s support for Guyana’s efforts at resolving the border controversy with Venezuela through a peaceful, legal process.

The Ambassador addressed the border controversy on Friday night as he addressed the 2025 Europe Day celebrations held at the Herdmanston Lodge, Georgetown.

In his address- the final Europe Day remarks he will deliver as EU Ambassador to Guyana- Mr. van Nes highlighted that the union deeply values peace and as such, continues to support Guyana’s way of settling the controversy.

“We remain very concerned about the border controversy with Venezuela and fully support Guyana in its efforts at maintaining peace and security

“… Guyana finds itself in a key position in this regard by choosing legal means to defend its sovereignty. At the International Court of Justice, Guyana demonstrated a commitment to a rule-based international order, which we deeply value,” the Ambassador said.

The diplomat’s statement came a week after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) told Venezuela that it shall refrain from conducting, or preparing to conduct, elections in the Essequibo region.

Venezuela had announced that it intends to hold elections in Guyana’s Essequibo for which it has administered for over 100 years, a territory that has been claimed by Venezuela. Over the past few days, the Bolivarian Republic has been issuing notices on the candidates for these elections.

Guyana maintains that Essequibo is an integral part of its sovereign territory, a position upheld by the ICJ in its December 2023 ruling. So the Venezuelan election plan, scheduled for May 25, 2025, is seen by Guyana as a direct violation of the Court’s Order and international law.

Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, who addressed the Europe Day event too, welcomed the EU continued support for the English-speaking nation.

He said the EU’s “steadfast advocacy for the principles of international law” alongside the Court’s declaration bolster Guyana’s position that differences must be resolved through peaceful means.

Guyana’s International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) team has achieved a significant milestone.

They recently finished third in the medal standings at the fourth ISKF South America Masters Tournament in Bogota, Colombia.

A dedicated contingent of 29 competitors, supported by coaches, judges, and officials, proudly represented the South American nation, delivering impressive performances across junior and senior divisions.

The tournament commenced with vital training, judges’, and instructors’ seminars led by the esteemed Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki, 9th Dan, Chief Instructor and Chairman of ISKF.

These seminars provided valuable technical development for all participants.

Guyana’s junior karatekas were particularly dominant, securing multiple gold medals.

Katalina Carter (8-9 girls), Arryan Sankar (10-11 girls), Agnes Siju (12-13 girls), Jasmin Dalgetty, and Amario Tyrrell (both 12-13 boys) all delivered outstanding displays to claim double gold in both Kata and Kumite disciplines within their respective divisions.

Further strong results in the junior categories included double silver medals for David Charles and Emily Ibbott (both 12-13), adding to a healthy medal haul alongside contributions from Jevanah Collins, Ethan Goodhart, Trivena Tyrrell, Miah Sampson, Gia McPherson, Kem Chan, Kempton Carter, and Gael McPherson.

The black belt divisions saw fierce competition, with Guyana’s experienced competitors making their mark. Talitha Kissoon (18-21 female) earned a bronze in Kata and silver in Kumite, while Kristian Chaves (18-21 male) secured a bronze in Kumite.

Alex Rodrigues (22-44 male) also claimed a Kumite bronze, and Feonia Yong (22-44 female) took bronze in Kata and silver in Kumite.

A gold medal highlight in the senior ranks came from Rosita Katchay, who triumphed in the 45-55 female adult Kumite event.

Team events added further excitement and medals to Guyana’s tally. The junior team of Jevanah Collins, Kem Chan, and Ethan Goodhart showcased excellent synchronisation to win gold in Team Kata.

Another junior squad, comprising Trivena Tyrrell, Emily Ibbott, and Javier Collins, secured the silver medal in the same event.

The Men’s Adult Team Kumite provided a thrilling conclusion, with Guyana battling past hosts Colombia to reach the final against Argentina.

Despite a spirited effort in the gold medal match, which included a notable individual victory by Alex Rodrigues, Guyana ultimately secured a well-deserved silver medal.

Plans are moving apace for the Demerara Cricket Board’s first-ever Independence T10 Cup on May 25 at the LBI ground, with corporate Guyana embracing the fund-raising initiative.

Organisers of the electrifying tournament, featuring eight teams from within the county of Demerara, have confirmed Office Express as a partner for the highly anticipated showdown.

Office Express has undertaken to print all the tickets for the event, as well as sponsor one educational gate prize for a lucky patron.

“We’re extremely happy to welcome Office Express as one of the first partners of this venture,” the Demerara Cricket Board said.

“We encourage persons to engage with this business so that they can continue to offer support to this beautiful game of cricket.”

Office Express is a Berbice-based establishment with outlets at Portuguese Quarter in Port Mourant; Section B, Number 78 Village, Corentyne; and Main Street, New Amsterdam. There is also a location at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.

While the teams will be represented by players within the respective associations, each team is allowed two guest players from other counties.

The champion team is guaranteed G$250,000 cash plus trophy; the runners-up G$150,000 and trophy, while the losing semi-finalists will be receive G$50,000 each.

On the individual side, Man-of-the-Match in the semi-finals and final will receive a trophy.

Action will bowl off at 10:00h and conclude under floodlights.

Cooking gas is a modern, clean, and efficient energy source that is commonly used in households. A lack of awareness regarding its safe use can be hazardous and lead to leaks, explosions, fires, poisoning, and in extreme cases, fatalities. The following guidelines outline safety practices for the transportation, handling, storage, installation, and use of cooking gas or LPG cylinders in households. These practices help to minimise the risks associated with the mishandling or misuse of cooking gas or LPG cylinders and should be followed consistently by all consumers.

Cooking gas, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), is a widely utilised and efficient energy source for cooking, heating, electricity generation, transportation, and various other purposes in many households. Despite its numerous advantages, cooking gas is highly flammable and poses severe risks if not handled with proper safety measures and caution.

To promote safety and ensure the well-being of individuals and property, it is crucial to follow the recommended safety protocols when using cooking gas or LPG cylinders. The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has issued the GYS 264:2021 Specification for the Storage, Handling, and Transportation of LPG Cylinders to provide clear and effective guidelines for cooking gas consumers.

Consumer awareness of potential hazards, understanding the importance of safety measures, and adhering to the recognised safety guidelines can help to prevent tragic accidents and create a safer environment for individuals and their households.

When Purchasing Cooking Gas Cylinders (LPG Cylinders)

• Examine the cooking gas cylinder to ensure that the supplier’s seal is properly affixed to the cylinder and the safety cap is intact at the time of purchase. Do not accept the cylinder if the seal is broken.
• Check the cylinder for any visible signs of damage, including sharp dents, cuts, corrosion, bulging, pitting or leaks. Do not accept the cylinder if any of these defects are present.

Transportation and Handling of Cooking Gas Cylinders (LPG Cylinders)

• Do not throw, drop, drag, or roll the cylinder on its side when moving it. Instead, carry the cylinder by hand or transport it using a trolley.
• Secure the cylinder in an upright position during transport and ensure the valve faces upwards. This helps to minimise the risk of movement, tipping, or physical damage.
• Ensure the vehicle is well-ventilated, with all windows open.
• Never leave a cylinder in a parked vehicle with the windows closed. Heat can quickly build up and potentially cause the cylinder to overpressurise, which may lead to the release of propane inside of the vehicle. This could bring the propane into contact with an ignition source, creating a hazardous situation.

Storage of Cooking Gas Cylinders (LPG Cylinders)

• Store cylinders upright in a dry and well-ventilated area, away from combustible and flammable materials, heat sources (including heat-emitting appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, generators, and water pumps), and other gases to prevent gas buildup.
• Cylinders must be stored with their valves upright and free from any obstructions to prevent damage.
• Cylinders must be placed on a level and firm base and be well secured to prevent them from moving and falling.
• No more than 27 kg (60 lbs. or three 20 lb. cylinders) should be stored indoors in households.  If a larger quantity needs to be stored indoors, seek guidance from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS). There are specific rules and regulations for storing different quantities of cooking gas or LPG cylinders, and these must be followed.

Proper Installation, Use and Maintenance of Cooking Gas Cylinders (LPG Cylinders)

Installing Cylinders

• Ensure the use of supplier-recommended regulators, hoses, and clamps, which are designed for attachment to the specific cylinder. This helps to ensure secure connections.
• Check that the rubber seal on the cylinder valve is intact and properly fitted.
• Firmly attach the regulator to the top of the cylinder and ensure it is securely fitted according to the supplier’s recommended operating instructions for attaching the regulator, hose, and clamps to the specific cylinders.
• Ensure the hose is inserted to the full length of the regulator’s outlet, and the clamps are positioned around the hose and outlet. Avoid applying excessive pressure to attach the clamps to the hose, as this may result in perforations, cracks or breaks in the hose.

Using Cylinders

• Ensure that the stove knobs and regulator are in the OFF position before disconnecting and connecting a cylinder.
• Do not connect or disconnect a cylinder near a naked flame, smoke, or heat source (including heat-emitting appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, generators, and water pumps etc).
• Ensure that the knobs on the stove are in the OFF position before lighting a match. Light the match before turning the stove knob to the ON position.
• Ensure that the regulator attached to the cylinder is in the OFF position when the cylinder is not in use. Also, check that the stove knobs are in the OFF position during and after cleaning the stove to prevent any hazards. Leaving the stove knobs unintentionally in the ON position can lead to gas leaks or accidental ignitions, which could result in a fire or explosion.

Maintaining Cylinders and Gas Connections

• Regularly inspect the regulator and hose to ensure they are in good condition and free from damage or cracks.  Hoses should be replaced every 2 to 5 years, while regulators should be replaced every 5 years, depending on the wear and tear.
• Regularly inspect the cylinder to check for gas leaks by applying a solution of soapy water (such as a mixture of dishwashing liquid and water), to the cylinder valve. Look for bubbles, which indicate a gas leak.
• If the cylinder or gas connections show signs of damage or corrosion, replace them immediately. It is important to schedule routine maintenance checks for the cylinder and gas connections to identify any potential issues before they become serious problems.

Cylinders and regulators must be handled exclusively by adults. It is not advisable for children to install or change cylinders, regulators, or operate gas stoves.

How to Handle a Suspected Gas Leak

• Cooking gas contains an added chemical, ethyl mercaptan, which gives it a distinct odour or scent, similar to rotten eggs, rotten cabbage, burnt tyres or sulphur. If you smell cooking gas, it is possible that there is a gas leak. Also, if you hear a continuous hissing sound from a cylinder, it is possible there is a leak.
• DO NOT LIGHT THE STOVE IF YOU SMELL GAS OR SUSPECT THAT THERE IS A GAS LEAK.
• If the stove is on, TURN IT OFF.Do not panic.  Open all doors and windows to ventilate the rooms and allow the gas to dissipate.
• Do not operate any electrical equipment until the area is properly ventilated.
• Turn off the regulator on the cylinder, disconnect the cylinder and take it outdoors.
• Contact the Guyana Fire Service and the gas supplier (Massy, Sol or Guygas) for additional information and assistance, using the following emergency contact numbers:

A construction worker has been remanded to prison following a murder charge.

Gregory DeYonge, known as “Buckman,” 26, from High Dam, Caracas, West Canje Berbice, appeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Michelle Matthias.

The court heard that DeYonge murdered 35-year-old Ceon La Fleur, referred to as “Shawn,” on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

During the court proceedings, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Winston Poliah confirmed that the post-mortem report was still outstanding and requested a two-week timeline for its completion.

Poliah stated that once available, the prosecution would proceed promptly with the trial.

DeYonge, who appeared without legal representation, was remanded to prison and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on June 2.

Reports indicate that 40-year-old Anganisha Newyear, known as “Angie,” was also involved in a heated argument with Shawn that escalated dangerously. In the altercation, Shawn stabbed Angie.

The incident unfolded between 22:30 hrs on May 4 and midnight on May 5.

Upon hearing about the altercation, DeYong rushed to the scene and attacked Shawn with a machete. After committing the act, he fled the area.

Shawn’s mother, 50-year-old Nicola Christine La Fleur, recalled speaking to her son shortly before receiving a distressing call about the incident.

When she rushed outside, she discovered Shawn unresponsive on the road, suffering from a severe head wound.

When questioned about the motive behind these tragic events, Nicola disclosed that her son was troubled about the paternity of a two-month-old child.

Reports confirm that both Shawn and DeYonge have been named as the fathers of the child.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

IPL 2025 has been suspended. The decision was taken by the BCCI in the wake of the cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. A formal announcement is expected soon.

The decision to suspend the IPL was taken on Friday after BCCI officials got on a call, with secretary Devajit Saikia and IPL chairman Arun Dhumal among the participants.

All the franchises have already been informed about the suspension.

The teams have already started disbanding with players and support staff understood to be taking the next available flights out of and within India.

It is understood that the participants on the call agreed unanimously that it was not appropriate to continue the IPL in the current environment.

The development came a day after the IPL decided to abandon Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) midway into the first innings.

With the airport in Dharamsala and the ones in nearby areas shut, the players and support staff of PBKS and DC travelled from Dharamshala to Jalandhar by bus and then took a train to Delhi.

When will the IPL resume?

The IPL is yet to work out an alternate window to host the rest of the tournament. Currently, one possible window is in September, when India don’t have a bilateral engagement. However, this is also the window the Asia Cup was slotted in.

IPL 2025 is currently 58 games old, including the abandonment in Dharamsala.

There are 12 games left to play in the group stage, scheduled for Lucknow (2), Hyderabad, Ahmedabad (3), Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru (2), Mumbai, Jaipur, followed by the playoffs, to be played in Hyderabad and Kolkata.

The remainder of the tenth edition of the PSL has been moved to the UAE amid escalating border tensions between Pakistan and India. The PCB has said that the dates and venues of the remaining eight games in the PSL 2025 season would be officially confirmed in due course.

On Thursday, Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi were due to play a game at the Rawalpindi Stadium, which was rescheduled following an emergency meeting. At the meeting, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi met with overseas players in the league, who overwhelmingly expressed a desire to relocate the league to the UAE.

ESPNcricinfo understands that foreign players are already on their way out of Pakistan to the UAE, where the rest of the league will be played. It is likely to be several days before the next game is played as the PCB works out which venues to play the games at.

The original schedule would have seen four of the remaining games in Rawalpindi, one in Multan, and the final three in Lahore. An earlier update from the PCB had said the league would be rescheduled, but did not confirm at the time it would be taken out of Pakistan, with Karachi considered a likely option.

The PSL, now in its tenth season, is familiar with the UAE, having started there back in 2016. It was played there in full – barring the PSL 2017 final – for the first two seasons. Part of season six, in 2021, also had to be played in the UAE because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Any delays to the PSL are likely to impact Pakistan’s international calendar, too. Bangladesh are due to arrive in Pakistan three days after the PSL final, originally slated for May 18, with the first of five T20Is to begin on May 25 in Faisalabad.
