Australia’s Mitchell Marsh smashed 60 from just 31 balls at the top of the order to set up Lucknow Super Giants’ comfortable 12-run win over Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

Marsh was used as an impact player and registered his third half-century in four innings as Lucknow posted 203-8.

The chase went to the final over but with 22 required from it, Lucknow seamer Avesh Khan held his nerve as Mumbai fell short on 191-5, with captain Hardik Pandya unbeaten on 28.

Lucknow raced to 69-0 inside the six-over powerplay, with Marsh scoring 60 of those runs and Aiden Markram had just seven.

Makram went on to score 53 from 38 balls before cameos of 31 from Ayush Badoni and 27 from David Miller helped them past 200, while Hardik took 5-36.

Mumbai lost openers Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton cheaply, but Naman Dhir’s 46 and an entertaining 67 from 43 balls from Suryakumar Yadav kept them in contention.

But his dismissal left 52 runs required from the final four overs and swung the game back in Lucknow’s favour, and they closed out the victory with spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi bowling a brilliant spell of 1-21.

Police are investigating the death of Kenroy Bradford, a 20-year-old labourer of Wismar, Linden.

Police Headquarters said the man died around 00:05 hrs Friday at Five Corners, Linden.

Late Thursday night, Bradford was said to be in the company of Andrew Jacobs and Anthony Jacobs (both residents of Block 22 Wismar) at Blazing Shop at Five Corner Mackenzie, consuming alcohol. During this time, Anthony went over to a 29-year-old female bartender, who was in the company of 20-year-old Cyrus Jacobis, and four other persons.

Cyrus became angry and pushed Anthony away, and an argument reportedly started between the parties.

Cyrus and his crew then left the shop and went to the parapet of Five Corners. Anthony and his friends then followed Cyrus and the others, and the argument continued.

It is alleged that Jacobs and his crew started to pelt beer bottles at Cyrus and his gang. A brawl erupted between both parties in the parking lot of Five Corners, and Cyrus allegedly rushed into the fight with a knife and stabbed Anthony in his abdomen, causing him to fall. Andrew then pulled Anthony away from Cyrus and received a cut to his finger in the process.

The fight continued with parties on both sides joining the melee.

When the fight ended, Andrew realized that his brother Anthony was bleeding, and he rushed him to the Linden Hospital Complex with the assistance of a public-spirited citizen. Cyrus and his crew then left the Five Corners spot.

However, persons who were close by observed Bradford on the ground and contacted the Police. Ranks arrived at the scene where information was given, and they made checks in Dacama Circle, Mackenzie, and arrested Cyrus, whose clothing was covered with suspect’s blood.

He was taken to the Mackenzie Police Station, where it was observed that he had injuries to his back and a cut to his left ear. He was escorted to the Linden Hospital Complex for medical attention, where he was treated and taken into Police custody.

The scene was processed, where it was observed that Bradford was motionless, in a crouching position, bracing on the back of a White Premio motor car bearing registration number plate PAH 1750.

Bradford was later escorted to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead by a doctor. The body is at the J.Jetsco Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, Anthony is admitted to the hospital as a patient, with his condition deemed critical.

In custody are Cyrus Jacobis, Tiffany Fiedtkou, and Andrew Jacobs. Investigations are ongoing.

Officers of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) intercepted an alleged gold smuggling attempt, seizing $30 million worth of gold and $31 million cash.

A SOCU release noted that the officers acted based on intelligence received. Four individuals, including two Brazilians, one Cuban, and a Guyanese, were detained. The four persons are said to be assisting with investigations.

According to Head of SOCU, Deputy Commissioner Fazil Karimbaksh, SOCU officers were able to disrupt the smuggling operation before the gold could be moved and warned gold smugglers to stop this illicit activity or they will face the full force of the law, underscoring the government’s commitment to tackling transnational crimes and protecting the nation’s valuable resources.

“This latest crackdown follows a similar enforcement action in March 5, 2025 at Lethem, Region 9, where two persons were arrested.

“The Government of Guyana remains resolute in its mission to combat illicit gold smuggling and dismantle networks involved in these illegal activities. Officials continue to monitor and enforce strict measures to hold offenders accountable and prevent further economic losses to the country,” the release noted.

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday said once the current backlog of housing applications is cleared, the government could consider lowering the age requirement for applications to 18 years.

Jagdeo spoke about the government’s ambitious housing plan on Thursday at his weekly press conference. As he spoke about the People’s Progressive Party Civic’s (PPP/C) plans if it returns to office this year, he vowed that this housing programme will continue.

“We’re gonna continue investing in housing,” Jagdeo declared, noting that about $300 billion has been spent in the sector since the PPP went back into office in 2020.

And he said the government is considering how it can support more Guyanese.

“We made it clear that everyone Guyanese who wants a plot of land will get it, and we may get to a stage where we can come down back to the 18-year-old being able to apply for and getting their plot of land once we get past the big backlog APNU left for us,” Jagdeo said.

Since August 2020, more than 40,000 residential house lots have been distributed to families from various income brackets. The PPP, in its 2020 manifesto, promised to distribute 50,000 house lots by the end of 2025.

Guyana Harpy Eagles have dramatically clawed their way back into contention against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, showcasing resilience and determination on day two of their sixth-round clash in the 2025 West Indies Four-Day Championship at Warner Park.

At stumps on day two, the Harpy Eagles are just five runs away from erasing the Hurricanes’ first-innings advantage, with nine wickets still in hand.

Facing a daunting 142-run deficit, openers Matthew Nandu (53*) and Raymond Perez (49) laid a solid foundation with a 78-run partnership.

On the verge of his first half-century of the season, Perez fell attempting a second consecutive six off Rahkeem Cornwall, a dismissal that belied his otherwise positive approach.

The in-form Kevlon Anderson, who remained unbeaten on 77 in the first innings, continued his impressive form, compiling a compact 31 (4x4s) from 51 balls.

The government plans to open six new hospitals this year as part of plans to make health services more accessible across the country, and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said the government is open to hiring healthcare workers from any country to meet short-term staffing needs.

“We’re going to launch six new hospitals before the end of the year… six new hospitals with CT Scans now so that means you need to have about 18- 20 technicians to run only CT scans. They’re starting to train people but we don’t have enough people.

“The President has said clearly to (Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony), ‘Recruit from any part of the world.’ We want when these hospitals come into operation that people can walk in and get services,” Jagdeo said on Thursday at a party press conference.

He explained that even though the government is on a robust mission to train many more Guyanese for jobs in the health sector, the government understands some workers may need to come from abroad.

He said, “If we don’t have enough nurses and we need them in the short term, we’d have to bring them in and the technicians and everyone.”

By 2028, the government will have constructed and operationalised 12 state-of-the-art regional hospitals, delivering world-class healthcare services to residents in Regions One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Eight, and Nine. The first six should be opened this year; these are the Lima, De Kinderen, Enmore, Diamond, Bath, and the No 75 Regional Hospitals in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six, respectively.

All of these institutions will have 24-hour Accident and Emergency, 24-hour labs, a suite of imaging services including ultrasound, digital X-Ray, and CT scans, along with operation theatres and more – eliminating long hours of traveling to access quality care.

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday said if reelected, the party will pursue huge investment opportunities in the lucrative oil sector that will generate guaranteed returns for “small people.”

He also noted that the differentiated and possibly even lower taxes for small business owners will be pursued.

Jagdeo spoke at a party press conference on Thursday. At that press conference, he outlined some of the ventures the PPP intends to pursue should it be reelected later this year in the General and Regional Elections.

“We have already identified about three big business opportunities in the oil and gas sector that we can tailor for small people in the economy, small investors, that they can share the prosperity too. You can do it in increments of $50,000 investments or $100,000

“It is a huge thing that we are talking about now,” he said.

Jagdeo emphasised that these ventures are meant to help ordinary citizens, be it teachers or other public servants, generate guaranteed income without much risk.

Aside from wealth-generation ventures, Jagdeo said the PPP also wants to more government services to become digitalised and improve the quality of education and healthcare in Guyana.

These plans and more, Jagdeo said, will be released shortly when the party launches its new manifesto.

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo raised concerns about the ongoing discussions for a coalition between two opposition parties, APNU and AFC, on Thursday.

According to Jagdeo, who is also Guyana’s Vice President, the two parties seem more focused on what benefits they can secure for themselves instead of focusing on how they can help improve the lives of Guyanese.

“Their primary concern is splitting spoils. They can’t win the elections.. But already they are talking about how they will split up jobs, who will get what ministry,” Jagdeo lamented.

No agreement reached on coalition between APNU/AFC

What he referred to was a report on proposals for the coalition to materialise. In In a statement issued late on Sunday, the AFC confirmed that it had approved its conditions for the coalition following a special meeting of the National Executive Committee. According to the statement, the AFC is sticking to its stance on Hughes as the presidential candidate and also put forward a proposal for a 60-40 power-sharing split, with 60% of positions in the coalition government to be held by APNU representatives.

Jagdeo said he understands the need to have certain metrics for negotiations but opined that the parties don’t seem focused on how their possible coalition will uplift people.

“They don’t care about people, and they don’t talk about housing or water or generating external walth… all they are concerned bout is who gets what.

“Every week, it is one thing, you (want to) see what percentage we are going to get, who is going to be the leader,” he noted.

The two parties formed a coalition a decade ago. Together, they contested the 2015 General and Regional elections and won. They again contested the 2020 elections together but the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) was elected to government.

In the aftermath of those elections, the AFC did not renew the coalition pact though APNU and AFC parliamentarians remain together in the National Assembly and the majority opposition. Ahead of the 2025 elections, the parties are exploring another coalition.

As a gruesome and graphic video continues to be shared widely across social media, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday urged persons to desist from sharing such content.

The Vice President spoke at his weekly press conference at Freedom House, the People’s Progressive Paty Civic Headquarters.

The video he referred to shows a woman being shot at by her partner. The video also shows the woman succumbing to her injuries and her young son witnessing the tragedy unfold.

“You can stop it from being disseminated by not sharing it, people can take responsibility,” Jagdeo said on Thursday.

He added, “Why would you share these gruesome videos, especially of people being subjected to violence? I want to urge people to not do so. Just imagine the victims were members of your family; how would you feel if you saw this circulated widely?”

The Vice President also asked persons to desist from sharing any content that is racist, untrue or that undermines Guyana’s sovereignty.

Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo said the Guyana Government will engage the United States administration on the new reciprocal tariffs, which will soon take effect, aiming to possibly reduce the import duty on local products.

“We are looking forward to having that engagement with the US government.

“And we will be working with (Guyanese) exporters to access US market and other markets so that no one will lose out,’ Jagdeo said at his weekly press conference on Thursday.

The US President said he would impose a 10% baseline tariff on all imports to the U.S. and higher duties on dozens of other countries. Guyana will face a tariff rate of 38% based on President Trump’s new decision.

The Vice President said the government expected trade decisions from the US President as he was clear about his goals to prioritise US trade ahead of the 2024 elections. Even so, Jagdeo believes there is room for the government to engage the Trump administration on a lower tariff rate.

Jagdeo explained that this higher rate Guyana has is likely based on the fact that Guyana exports more to the US than it imports from that country. With that trade surplus, he believes President Trump is making good on a promise to “balance the scales.”

In the first instance, Jagdeo believes that there may be reporting differences that lead to the higher tax rate for Guyana.

Based on information supplied by Guyana to the United Nations global trade platform, Comtrade, Guyana exported US$3.3 billion worth of goods to the US and imported US$2.56 billion from that country. With those figures, there is a trade surplus of about US$799 million. Based on figures reported by the US, however, Guyana’s exports to the US totalled US$5.5 billion, while imports stood at US$1.3 billion. Therefore, there was a trade surplus of $4.1 billion.

The trade surplus, Jagdeo clarified, may have been what the administration used to derive the 38% figure. But if the information is clarified, and both sides are able to reconcile the trade figures, Jagdeo believes the rate may come down as the trade surplus figure decreases.

“The bigger the surplus is in percentage terms, the higher would be your reciprocal tariff. It is across the board, it is for friend and foe alike

“We’re still to work closer with the US government on the numbers and to see if that is what is applicable in our case,” he said.

In the second instance, Jagdeo pointed out that the lion’s share of Guyana’s exports to the country in 2024- some US$3.1 billion- came from the petroleum sector. Since ExxonMobil and Hess, two US companies, have the majority share in the oil-producing consortium offshore Guyana, Jagdeo hopes the two countries can work out a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Finally, Jagdeo pointed out that there are exemptions to the tariffs. Those exemptions include petroleum products, aluminium ore and gold- three of the major Guyanese exports to the US. So even though the government will be engaging the US on the tariff, a substantial amount of exports will be unaffected.

Nevertheless, the Vice President stressed the government’s aim of engaging the US so that no local exporter feels any pressure. And he assured those exporters that the government will do all it can to support them.
