The Guyana Police Force Tuesday said that the situation across the country has returned to normal, following unrest sparked by the tragic death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge. In a press release from the Office of the Commissioner of Police, authorities stated that joint services have stabilised conditions across all ten administrative regions.

Over the past 24 hours, more than 100 individuals have been arrested in connection with various offences, including armed robbery. Additionally, 37 motorcycles believed to have been used in criminal activities were seized, and charges are expected to be laid against those in custody. The police have also issued wanted bulletins for several individuals believed to be involved in the disturbances.

Ranks of the Guyana Police Force have been able to capture several persons wanted for their actions that incited terror late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

Police Officers went after persons involved in looting, robberies, and other disturbances. Robin Simon and Azriel Asby were two of the perpetrators who were quickly apprehended.

In a statement early Tuesday morning, Police Headquarters said all videos, images, and other available evidence are being reviewed, and any person implicated in criminal activities will be arrested and charged.

Police noted that actions such as arson, blocking and burning public roadways, malicious damage and destruction to private and public property, personal violence, acts of terror, and domestic terrorism are all being looked for.

So far, ranks have been able to evaluate the footage and identify key elements to help them apprehend those involved in the criminal activities

A tragic incident in New Amsterdam has resulted in the death of an e-cyclist, Leyland Reece, 53, from Smythfield, Berbice.

The accident occurred on Tuesday at 6:15 hrs along Princess Elizabeth Road.

Reports confirm that a motorcar, driven by Andrew King, 37, of  Main Street, Cumberland Village, East Canje Berbice, was involved in this fatal event. King was reportedly speeding on the one-way road when he lost control of his vehicle and struck Reece.

Reece, who was riding an electric cycle, sustained serious injuries. Civilians promptly transported him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor. Despite efforts to save him, Reece succumbed to his injuries.

Reece’s body is currently at the hospital mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

A breathalyzer test conducted on King revealed no trace of alcohol.

In response to this incident, Region Six Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus emphasized the importance of road safety.

He urged all road users to adhere to the “five Cs” and be vigilant while driving. Bacchus stated, “many times we noticed persons tend to speed, whether they are late for work, shopping or any other means. We are asking you to leave early, use the road with caution, don’t speed down the road and ensure you look out for your brothers and sisters.”

King is now in custody and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Otis Grant, the owner of OG Security, is seeking to clear his name after the Guyana Police Force issued a wanted bulletin for his arrest.

He was captured in a photograph with several other persons outside of Fix-It Hardware on Main Street, Georgetown. Police said these individuals are among those wanted for inciting public terror under the Criminal Law Offences Act.

But Grant said the situation outside the business place was more complicated. According to Grant, he was asked to provide security services to the business as chaos unfolded across Georgetown.

“When I arrived there, the guys were trying to break in (and) we were telling them not to do that.

“At no time, I would ever, ever, ever try looting in this country or any part of the world,” Grant said.

The security service provider said he will be engaging the Guyana Police Force, in a bid to clear his name. He also told the News Room that a colleague- who is also in the photograph- was also providing security services there with him.

Pupils and teachers of the Chateau Margot Primary School were injured after a corrosive substance was reportedly thrown on them sometime on Monday.

In a release, the Ministry of Education characterised the incident as an “acid attack” but did not name the school where the pupils and teachers were from. However, videos shared widely on social media indicate that they were from the Chateau Margot school.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand reportedly took the affected pupils and teachers to a Georgetown hospital, offered support, and stayed while they received the necessary medical attention and care.

A representative of the Guyana Police Force’s Corporate Communications Unit confirmed that the matter is being investigated. The Ministry of Education, in its statement, said it is working alongside the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted.

“The Ministry unequivocally condemns any form of violence against students, teachers, or any member of the public. Schools and their environs should be safe spaces for learning and development to take place, and any act that threatens this sanctity will not be tolerated,” the statement noted.

In his public statement, Mr. Norton alleged that the individuals looting, setting fires, and involved in other criminal activities across Guyana are supporters of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C). He also distanced himself and his party from those criminal activities.

The Police responded to Mr. Norton and said that any and all individuals caught engaging in criminal activities will be sanctioned.

“While the Force recognizes the importance of political leaders denouncing unlawful activities, it is imperative to emphasize that the Guyana Police Force remains resolute in its mandate to uphold the rule of law. As such, any individual found engaging in criminal behavior will be subject to the full extent of the law,” the release noted.

There have been disturbances in various parts of the country following the disclosure of information related to the cause of death of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge.

The unrest erupted after an official autopsy confirmed that Adrianna died by drowning, a conclusion that has been met with public outcry and disbelief in some quarters. Protests quickly escalated, with reports of fires on roadways, damage to private properties, and the looting of businesses and restaurants.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, during a press conference Monday night, acknowledged citizens’ right to peaceful protest but condemned the violent turn some demonstrations have taken.

“We will protect every citizen’s right to peacefully demonstrate and air their concerns. However, within those rights come responsibilities. If individuals breach the law, there must and will be consequences,” he said.

The President also decried the apparent hijacking of the protests for political purposes, describing such actions as “selfish” and detrimental to national unity.

Police, in a separate release, said all videos, images, and other available evidence are being reviewed, and any person implicated in criminal activities will be arrested and charged. Culprits will also be placed on a no-fly list.

The Guyana Police Force wishes to inform that ranks responded this evening to a report of an alleged robbery at the GST Chinese Supermarket, located at Aubrey Barker Road and Blue Sakie Drive.

During the incident, security guard Shevon Yearwood sustained a gunshot wound to her left shoulder. In the course of a confrontation with the police inside the supermarket, one of the suspects, identified as Cordell Eastman, was shot and killed. A 9MM Glock pistol was recovered at the scene.

Ranks remain on the ground as investigations continue. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
