Guyana’s first World Trade Center is slated to be officially opened on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, its Chief Executive Chairman, Komal Samaroo announced on Monday.

In a press release, World Trade Center Georgetown said Samaroo made the announcement in an invitation to delegates at the World Trade Center Association’s 55th annual General Assembly and Global Business Forum.

The building is situated at Lot 44 High Street, Kingston, Georgetown.

World Trade Center Georgetown is the first and the only in the CARICOM region.

“The official opening…will take place as Guyana has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies globally, driven by its burgeoning energy sector, infrastructure development, and a robust investment climate. As a result, this dynamic environment offers substantial opportunities for trade -both imports into and exports from the country.

“The opening of the World Trade Centre Georgetown signifies not only Guyana’s but the Caribbean Community (CARICOM’s) commitment to fostering international business relations as well as its desire to serve as a key player in global commerce,” the statement said Samaroo noted in the invitation letter.

The opening will feature speeches by government officials, business leaders, and international trade experts.

It will precede the annual WTCA Members Forum in New York City which is scheduled to open on October 28, the release noted.

“This way, delegates attending the WTCA meeting from across the globe and who have expressed an interest in coming to Guyana could find it convenient to so do,” WTCG executive director Wesley Kirton said, according to the release.

By participating in the opening, persons will be exposed to a platform to explore a myriad opportunities in areas such as agriculture and agribusiness, mining, tourism, manufacturing and energy.

Tyrese Blair, an 18-year-old of Buxton, East Coast Demerara is wanted by the Police in relation to the murder of Cuban national Jose Aurelio Ramirez, who was stabbed to death on Sunday.

In a wanted bulletin, Police Headquarters said Blair is wanted for questioning in relation to the murder which occurred on April 13 at Melanie Market Street, East Coast Demerara.

Blair’s last known address is Lot 44 Buxton Middle Walk, ECD.

Ramirez, 54, died after he was stabbed multiple times about his body.

Police earlier confirmed that one suspect was arrested and is custody.

According to a Police report, inquiries revealed that an anti-crime patrol was on duty in the vicinity of the Melanie Market area when they observed an emergency response team from the Melanie Fire Station attending to Ramirez.

He was lying on the road with several suspected stab wounds about his body, including to his chest, rib and chin. Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female Cuban national was with Ramirez. Police said she was not injured but she was questioned and is assisting with investigations.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri took a controlled, dominant victory in the Bahrain Grand Prix to close on team-mate Lando Norris in the world championship.

The Australian was serene in the lead, calmly keeping himself out of reach of his rivals, as Mercedes’ George Russell held off an assault from the second McLaren of Lando Norris for second.

Norris, fighting back from sixth on the grid and a five-second penalty for a false start, had a chance to pass Russell going into the final lap, but could not make it work.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was fourth, passed by Norris with eight laps to go, ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton in a lonely fifth.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen could only take sixth place from Alpine’s Pierre Gasly on the final lap, a week after his brilliant victory in Japan.

The result, the first time McLaren have won the home race of their Bahraini main shareholders, leaves Norris three points ahead of Piastri at the head of the championship.

Verstappen, anonymous and uncompetitive, is eight points off the lead in third.

Piastri was always favourite for victory after taking pole position, and he never looked in danger of losing the race once he had retained the lead at the start.

Behind him, Norris moved up from sixth on the grid to third on the first lap behind Piastri and Russell, with Leclerc running fourth in the Ferrari.

But it soon became apparent that Norris’ front wheels had been too far forward on the grid, and he was given a five-second penalty.

Despite his enforced longer pit stop, Norris managed not to lose a position, but he was passed by Leclerc at around one-third distance.

Ferrari had chosen a different tyre strategy to McLaren and Mercedes, starting on the medium tyre rather than the softs of their rivals.

That allowed Leclerc to run seven laps longer before his first stop, giving him a grip advantage in the second stint, and allowing the Ferrari to pass the McLaren at Turn Four on lap 25.

But the advantage swung back to Norris when the safety car came out on lap 32, shortly after half-distance, to allow officials to clear debris from the track.

Nearly all the drivers stopped for tyres, and Russell, Leclerc and Norris came out on three different compounds – Russell on softs, Leclerc on hards and Norris on mediums.

After a few laps of stasis, Norris eased up towards Leclerc. They battled for several laps, and Norris accused Leclerc of forcing him off the track when he tried one move around the outside of Turn Four.

But he fought back and finally made the move stick with eight laps to go.

Karun Nair’s incredible comeback knock went in vain as Delhi Capitals’ unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Mumbai Indians.

Delhi Capitals faced a collapse of incredible proportions as they crumbled in their chase against Mumbai Indians, who claimed a thrilling 12-run win in the Indian Premier League.

The Capitals went into Sunday’s clash as the IPL’s only unbeaten team, but their streak came to an end as Mumbai snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with some tremendous fielding late on.

Hardik Pandya’s Indians got themselves back in the game after Karun Nair struck a breathtaking knock of 89 runs off 40 balls on his IPL comeback, putting the Capitals in pole position to chase down Mumbai’s 205-5.

Having made a slow start to their innings, Mumbai benefitted from some fine batting from their middle order. Rohit Sharma (18) was dismissed early, but Ryan Rickelton (41) and Suryakumar Yadav (40) made inroads in the powerplay.

Suryakumar and Mumbai’s leading scorer Tilak Varma (59) did brilliantly through the middle, and Naman Dhir provided a much-needed flourish, striking 38 not out off 17.

Kuldeep Yadav continued his excellent form and was the pick of the Delhi bowlers, his figures reading 2-23 from four overs.

The Capitals’ chase got off to a nightmare start, with Jake Fraser-McGurk dismissed for a golden duck on the first ball of the innings.

But Nair stole the show from there, smacking Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah to all parts of the ground to race to a 22-ball fifty.

Mitchell Santner brilliantly ended Nair’s knock in the 12th over, but despite the losses of KL Rahul (15), Axar Patel (nine), and Tristan Stubbs (one), Delhi looked poised to chase the target down with Ashutosh Sharma (17) at the crease, needing 23 off 12 deliveries.

But a comical passage of play and some brilliant fielding from Mumbai saw Delhi collapse with three run-outs in the final three balls of the 19th over. Rickelton, Will Jacks, Raj Bawa and Santner combined to pull off an improbable heist and seal the Indians’ second win of the season.

Owing to their brilliant start to the season, the Capitals remain in second place on eight points, while Mumbai climb up to seventh.

Making his first IPL appearance in 1077 days, Nair entered the fray as an impact player and delivered a brilliant knock, notching up 89 runs off just 40 balls at an impressive strike rate of 222.50.

This is now his highest score in the IPL, overhauling his previous highest of 83, which came in 2016, coincidentally also for the Delhi franchise (named Delhi Daredevils at the time). He reached his half-century in just 22 balls, his first in the IPL in seven years and 11th in the competition overall.

The highlight of his innings was a fantastic takedown of Bumrah in the sixth over, from which he struck 18 runs – the most by any Indian batter against Bumrah in a single IPL over. In total, 29 of his 89 runs came off six Bumrah deliveries.

The great shame is that his efforts went in vain.

Interestingly, Mumbai have now been involved in three games with 12-run winning margins this season (against RCB and LSG), but this is the first time they have come out on top by such a score. (SportsMax)

President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced on Sunday that all residents of Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne) who applied for a house lot on or before December 31, 2024, will get an allocation this year.

“They are issuing a letter now to every single person in this region that would’ve applied for a house lot up to December 2024, that before the end of this year, you will have your allocation.

“The infrastructure is going in now so that will not be a worry,” the President said while engaging Berbicians in the region.

Housing backlog in Region Three to be cleared by September – President

Beyond the house allocations, the President also reminded the residents that houses for young professionals are being constructed at Palmyra.

In March, the President said by September 2025, all individuals who applied for land in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) up to 2024 will receive provisional allocation letters for their house lots.

The government has also said it is trying to clear the backlog in other regions.

Since August 2020, more than 40,000 residential house lots have been distributed to families from various income brackets. The governing People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) in its 2020 manifesto, promised to distribute 50,000 house lots by the end of 2025.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) registered a commanding nine-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Match 28 of the TATA IPL 2025 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur.

Riding on Phil Salt’s explosive 65 off 33 and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 62 off 45, RCB chased down a target of 174 with ease in just 17.3 overs.

Playing in their green jersey as part of their environmental sustainability initiative, RCB delivered a clinical all-round performance.

The match also marked RR’s first home game of the season at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.RCB skipper Rajat Patidar won the toss and opted to bowl first.

RR openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson began watchfully, focusing on building a solid platform. Jaiswal took charge during the powerplay, guiding the Royals to 45/0 after six overs.

For the first time this season, RCB failed to pick a wicket in the powerplay, but their bowlers did well to keep the scoring rate under control.Post the powerplay, Krunal Pandya was introduced into the attack and struck immediately. He deceived Samson with flight and had him stumped, breaking the opening stand.

Riyan Parag joined Jaiswal at the crease, and the pair put together a 56-run partnership. However, Yash Dayal delivered the breakthrough in the 14th over with a clever slower ball that foxed Parag, who departed for 30 (22).Jaiswal, who had already brought up his second fifty of the season, continued to accelerate.

He launched into Josh Hazlewood in the 16th over, hitting a six and a four off the first two deliveries. However, Hazlewood had the last laugh as he trapped Jaiswal LBW on the final ball of the over for a well-made 75 off 47.

Dhruv Jurel provided the finishing touches with a composed unbeaten 35 off 23 balls, steering RR to a competitive 173/4 in their 20 overs.

In response, RCB openers Phil Salt and Virat Kohli began the chase aggressively. Salt, in particular, came out with fierce intent. Despite a fiery battle with Jofra Archer and surviving a couple of dropped chances, he capitalised in style.

Targeting the on-side boundaries with power, Salt reached his half-century in just 28 balls. He continued his onslaught before Kumar Kartikeya finally dismissed him for 65 in the ninth over.

RCB were well ahead in the chase at 101/1 after 10 overs, with Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal at the crease. The duo needed just 73 runs from the remaining 60 balls and never looked under pressure.Kohli, who initially played the anchor role, picked up the pace as he neared his personal milestone.

He brought up his fifty with a six, marking a significant landmark – his 100th T20 half-century, making him the first Indian and only the second player overall to achieve this feat in the format. That it came during a chase only added to his reputation as the ‘Chase Master’.

One hundred sixty-three (163) individuals celebrated a significant milestone on Saturday afternoon, graduating from a diverse array of technical and vocational courses offered by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security’s Women’s Innovation and Investment Network (WIIN), in collaboration with esteemed training partners City and Guilds and Nations Inc.

The graduation ceremony was a highlight of the second day of the We Lift 5 event.

The graduating cohort comprised 102 females and 61 males, demonstrating the programme’s broad reach. Graduates earned specializations in critical and in-demand trades, including carpentry, electrical installation, welding, and plumbing.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, emphasised the importance of international certification for young people in today’s competitive job market.

While the WIIN programme was initially conceived to empower women, its impact has been amplified by the inclusion of male participants through the Ministry’s ‘Mpower’ initiative.

The Minister further urged the newly certified graduates to capitalise on the burgeoning opportunities within Guyana’s construction industry.

She underscored the pivotal role these skilled individuals will play in driving both their own financial independence and the nation’s economic growth.

“I want to see you excel and succeed, but I would also like to urge you to give back to your country and do something worthy and worthwhile with what you have achieved today,” the Minister passionately conveyed.

Meanwhile, Pamela O’Toole, Director of Nations University Inc., acknowledged the significance of hosting the technical and vocational training at the institution for the first time.

Director O’Toole expressed her gratitude for the fruitful collaboration with the Ministry in fostering the development of essential skills among Guyana’s youth.

Jamol Johnson was remanded to prison after 1.2 kilogrammes of cannabis along with an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were found in an East Ruimveldt, Georgetown house with him.

The discovery was made on Tuesday, April 8 by ranks of the Customs Anti- Narcotic Unit (CANU).

In a statement, CANU said ranks acting on information received conducted an operation at East Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

During this process, the ranks unearthed a quantity of cannabis amounting to 1.2 kilogrammes, one black CANiK 9mm pistol with serial number, T6472-20CC-02763 with magazine containing six live rounds.

Johnson was arrested and escorted to CANU headquarters.

In a subsequent report, CANU said Johnson appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday. He reportedly he pleaded not guilty to the offense of possession of 1.278 kilogrammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

He was refused bail and remanded to prison.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has announced that construction on the first phase of the transformation of Parika Stelling into an international port facility is expected to commence long before July.

The President made the announcement on Friday during a community engagement at Hydronie Market, Region Three.

“On May 2nd, the Expression of Interest for an important project will close” he said. “We are going to launch the first phase of converting Parika Stelling into a port that will ship directly to the region. We hope that construction on the first phase will commence long before July,” the President said.

According to President Ali, the new port will allow Guyana to directly ship goods throughout the Caribbean, creating a streamlined export process that will bolster regional trade.

“What is that project? It is one of the most transformative projects for these islands, Parika and for every single farmer and shipper,” President Ali emphasised.

Already, some $46.6 million has been invested to rehabilitate the Parika Stelling. These upgrades have improved docking for regional ferries, expanded parking facilities, and streamlined speedboat operations along the Essequibo and Demerara routes.

President Ali also highlighted that critical investments will also be made to support the massive port facility.

“To support the port, we also have to invest in key infrastructure here so that you will have customs and immigration. You will also have a modern fire service, a modern coast guard, [and] a modern police service,” he said.

Funding will be directed toward constructing a state-of-the-art storage and processing facility, including cold storage, to significantly extend the shelf life of farmers’ produce.

President Ali explained that the port will also be equipped to accommodate cruise liners, giving tourists access to explore the rich offerings of the Essequibo tourism circuit.

“The investments that we are making in the port facility will also bring with it a marina. A marina so that we can have boats utilising the marina to support the tourism sector so that you would have sailing in the Essequibo River,” the president said.

Funds have already been set aside in the Ministry of Public Works’ $9.9 billion river transport budget for this initiative.

He emphasised that these transformative efforts go beyond the government’s manifesto commitments.

“We have fulfilled completely every single promise that we made in that manifesto. We are working beyond the confines of the manifesto. We don’t see ourselves bounded only by those commitments.

“We are looking for every opportunity to give more to the people within the financial and economic framework of our country,” President Ali affirmed.

The Parika port facility will add to the host of development projects currently underway in the region to drive economic growth. With major initiatives such as the Vreed-en-Hoop Shorebase, Gas-to-Energy projects, and the industrial hub at Wales, alongside expansive housing developments and critical road and drainage infrastructure, Region Three is poised to become a major engine of national development.
