Thirty-year-old Marissa Beete, the woman who was killed on Tuesday night had shared a two-year relationship with convicted drug trafficker Ghalee Khan.

However, that relationship had recently ended, and the couple were not on speaking terms for some time.

Tuesday night he showed up at her house to ‘talk’.

What happened?

• At around 18:15 hrs, Ghalee Khan, armed with a gun, showed up at Beete’s home at Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara
• He had called her saying he wanted to talk
• She was home with her 62-year-old mother, who strongly opposed having Ghalee Khan come over
• Despite this, Marissa opened the door and allowed Khan inside
• To give the couple privacy, Marissa’s mother went to another section of the house
• Shortly after, a loud explosion was heard
• Marissa’s mother ran into the room and found her in a slumped position in the living room, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head
• Her mother held on to Ghalee Khan, but he pushed her aside
• He then went behind a door in the house and turned the gun on himself, but he did not die
• Both Marissa and Ghalee Khan were taken to the hospital
• Marissa was pronounced dead
• Ghalee Khan survived and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital

Who is Ghalee Khan?

Ghalee Khan owns Integrated Security Service and is a licensed firearm holder.

Police recovered three live rounds of ammunition, four spent shells, and one bullet fragment at the scene.

Back in 2008, Ghalee Khan and Danvor Griffith were jointly charged with drug trafficking in the United States. They were tracked by federal agents after landing in New York from Guyana. They were traced to a location where they made a cocaine drop and were arrested.

Ghalee Khan was granted US$200,000 bail and instead of facing court, he fled the US and came back to Guyana.

While hiding out here, he became involved in different businesses, including the security firm.

He eventually got a passport and returned to the United States in 2020 and was arrested. In November of the following year, he was nabbed and sentenced to nine years in prison – for drug trafficking and for missing court appearances.

In September 2023, Ghalee Khan was re-sentenced in the US to 18 months in prison and returned to Guyana.

It was then that he started up a relationship with Marissa Beete.

The two bandits who were shot and killed after they attempted to rob a Hadfield Street, Georgetown supermarket, have been identified.

Their names are Orwin Garraway, 22, of East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme and Tyrese Adams of Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

They were among four bandits who tried to rob the Jia Jia supermarket around 19:30hrs.

The bandits were shot by the security guard of the supermarket.

Reports are that the faces of the bandirs were covered and they were both armed with handguns.

They each rushed to the cashier booths, one situated on the eastern entrance and the other on the western entrance of the supermarket and held the cashiers at gunpoint.

The bandits demanded that the cashiers hand over the money.

Upon seeing the guard, one of the suspects discharged several rounds in his direction.

So, he ran for cover and returned fire in the bandits’ direction.

Both bandits ran to exit the supermarket, and in doing so, one fell separately.

The other two bandits managed to escape west on Hadfield street.

Police recovered several live rounds at the scene.

The incident was captured on CCTV footage which monitors the supermarket. The footage is being reviewed.

Marissa Beete, an employee attached to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, was brutally shot and killed by her partner Ghalee Khan on Tuesday night.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred after Khan visited Beete’s Recht-door-Zee, Parfaite Harmonie, West Demerara home. The couple had been in a relationship for two years.

Beete sustained a gunshot wound to her head, the News Room understands.

Information reaching the News Room revealed that the couple were not on speaking terms.

When Khan showed up at the house, Beete’s mother reportedly told her not to open the door. However, she eventually did and the mother left the couple to talk.

Shortly after, an explosion was heard. Beete was found lying on the ground. She was bleeding.

Khan then fired a second shot at Bette before he went behind a door in the house and shot himself to his head.

Khan was taken to hospital. He is currently receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital, having been transferred from the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was initially admitted.

Khan is known to law enforcement officials. He was deported from the US in 2024 after completing a prison sentence for drug trafficking.

Two of four bandits who attempted to rob a Chinese supermarket on Hadfield Street, Georgetown on Tuesday night were shot and killed by a security guard.

The identities of the dead men are yet to be determined.

The News Room was informed that the robbery occurred about 19:30hrs at Jai Jai Chinese supermarket located on Hadfield Street, Georgetown.

Information so far revealed that four bandits entered the supermarket and carried out the crime.

During the process, a 35-year-old security guard who is attached to a private firm and guards the supermarket, responded and fatally wounded two of the men.

Ranks are currently at the scene. More details will be provided in a subsequent report.

City businessman Azruddin Mohamed is currently in Police custody and is being questioned in relation to alleged threats issued by him to a drone operator over the weekend.

The News Room was reliably informed that Mohamed was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon. He was subseqently released from Police custody.

Mohamed, the News Room was told, is being interviewed after he is accused of threathening a drone operator. The drone operator himself was detained over the weekend for flying a drone on the East Bank Demerara.

The report of the alleged threat was lodged by the drone operator while he was in custody.

Mohamed is in custody at the Ruimveldt police station in Georgetown.

Families of Ronaldo Peters and Keon Fogenay, the two men who were shot and killed by Police in the mining town of Linden, has urged residents to keep the peace, saying they are sure that justice will prevail in the case.

This follows their meeting with President Irfaan Ali who travelled to Linden Tuesday night to engage with the residents.

“We aassure the public that we are in full engagement with His Excellency and that you guys should keep the peace in Linden,” said Lieutenant Whiddon Antigua, speaking on behalf of the families after the meeting. Antigua is the cousin of Peters.

“Justice will be served in this situation,” Antiguan added.

The shooting of Peters by a Police Sergeant which took place on Monday afternoon in One Mile, Linden prompted protests across the mining town throughout Tuesday.

And the situation worsened when Fogenay was fatally wounded by Police during the protests.

President Ali said the government will provide emotional and physical support to the families of the men who were killed as well as the Police officers who were injured during the protests.

Police, acting on information received went to Shabba bar in One Mile, Linden in search for Peters, who they said was wanted for rape.

The shooting was captured on CCTV footage which shows that Peters was standing by the roadside in the company of a group of men, who were sitting. A heavily-tinted minibus then approached and men in white t-shirt and black pants emerged. Peters is seen fleeing from the scene and the policemen from the minibus chased after him. Seconds later, a policeman is seen dragging Peters by the neck and taking him to the vehicle.

Police Headquarters claimed that Peters was wanted for a rape that occurred sometime between 1st December 2024 and 31st January 2025. Peter’s aunt whom he lived with, identified as Mary Benjamin, confirmed that the Police had contacted her seeking Peter’s whereabouts for questioning, but she didn’t turn him in to the Police and neither did he surrender to Police.

The ranks went to the location armed with service weapons. Police headquarters claimed the ranks “were fully dressed in uniform,” but the CCTV footage shows they were not.

Meanwhile, Fogenay, was killed when protests erupted in the town on Tuesday.

He was a father of four, according to his relatives.

Police Headquarters stated that rounds discharged at the protesters caused the demise of the man.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandall Tuesday night said that an “arm’s length, independent and impartial” investigation will be conducted into the Police fatal shootings of Lindeners, Ronaldo Peters and Keon Fogenay, also known as ‘Dan’.

“What will be carried out is an arm’s length, independent and impartial investigation.

“There will be an independent investigation into the shootings and coming out of that, lawful and appropriate actions will be taken,” Nandall said while addressing the incidents during his weekly ‘Issues in the News’ programme which was broadcast Live on Facebook.

It will not change anything that has happened. For that matter, it may worsen and aggravate the situation further. So the appeal is to stay calm, be peaceful, be obedient to the laws,” Nandall said.

The Attorney General said authorities are asking that the investigative processes be facilitated.

“And wherever the chips fall so be it. Our government has never been accused of covering up these kinds of incidents….we do not subscribe to violence of any kind,” Nandall said.

Noting that the matter should not be taken “lightly” Nandlall said: “It’s a tragedy, it should have never happened, but it has happened, and we have to do damage control from all angles,” he noted.

President Irfaan Ali Tuesday afternoon travelled to the mining town of Linden to meet with the families of two men who were killed by Police. As requested by the families, the meeting was held in private.

“To the families, you have my love and prayers,” President Ali said as he engaged with a group at Watooka House, asking that they respect the wish of the families for them to meet in private.

“There are children, parents, mothers,” involved the President stated, and said an engagement with the family is the most important thing.

The President’s statement before he retreated to meeting with the families was captured in a LIVE on Facebook by Linden Mayor Sharma Solomon.

He said he wanted to discuss things that were meaningful and helpful to the families and the town of Linden.

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) expresses its deep concern over the tragic deaths of 26-year-old Ronaldo Peters, who was fatally shot by a policeman in Linden on Monday, and Keon ‘Dan’ Fogenay, who was shot during a protest today in response to Peters’s killing.

The Party supports the widespread calls for a full, thorough, and professional investigation into both incidents. In this regard, we welcome the assurance from His Excellency President Dr. Irfaan Ali that the officers involved in the two shootings are currently under close arrest, as advised by the Commissioner of Police. President Ali has further announced that a full investigation will be conducted, and that this investigation will be supported by the Regional Security System (RSS) to ensure an independent and credible process.

He has also made a heartfelt appeal for calm during this difficult time and has committed to meeting with the families of the deceased and community leaders to ensure their voices are heard and their concerns fully taken into account. While these tragic events deserve a united and compassionate national response, it is regrettable— though not surprising—that the political opposition and its extremist fringe elements have chosen to politicize these incidents. As is their pattern, they have rushed to inflame tensions and sow division for narrow political gain, showing little regard for the victims or their grieving families.

It is also yet another attempt to deflect from their glaring ineptitude and lack of appeal. They have no plan or strategy to develop the country or enhance the well-being of Guyanese, and no track record to stand on—hence their constant resort to seeking publicity by exploiting misfortune for political points.

The People’s Progressive Party condemns in the strongest terms this dangerous politicization and calls on all citizens to exercise calm, good sense, and restraint. We urge residents, particularly in Linden and surrounding communities, not to allow themselves to be misled or used by those who view tragedy as an opportunity to push a political agenda. The Party also extends its condolences to the families and other relatives of Ronaldo Peters and Dan Fogenay, and wishes a full and speedy recovery to the injured police ranks as well as civilians.

“He was passing going home, he was going for his documents, because they say he got shot by Jannos and the protest was by the bridge so how could he be a protester?” the relative said on recording on Facebook.
