Simmone Williams, a woman living overseas has reported that her ex-boyfriend, Jamal Paddy, has been making threats against her and her family in Guyana after she broke up with him seven months ago.

Williams told the News Room that on Sunday her stepfather, Godfrey Sutherland, was brutally attacked by Paddy. Sutherland had just returned home from his farm when Paddy attacked him with a cutlass and chopped him several times. Sutherland was alone at the time at his Better Hope, East Coast Demerara home.

He is now hospitalised in a serious condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

“What he did, he went in the yard where my mom lives and he hid, and hit him [Sutherland] behind his head, once he started chopping him, he took a chair and put it around his neck,” Williams explained.

She further related that a few weeks ago, Paddy went and threatened Sutherland.

“This young man, I used to date him, I broke up with him seven months ago and I have been getting threatening messages.

“The whole thing is, is either I be in a relationship with him or he is going to kill my whole family,” Williams stated.

Williams stated that despite reaching out to Paddy’s family to get him help, the threats continued.

“His family knew that he was a troubled young man, I have sent them messages and let them know to get him some kind of counseling.”

The matter has since been reported to the Sparendaam Police Station and an investigation is underway.

Mark Singh has donated footballs and boots to the Queenstown Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) to support the upcoming One Guyana Hope Festival Football Tournament on February 16.

The tournament, organised by local young men, including Azizi Christiani, and supported by Ricky Ramraj, Regional Vice Chairman and Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, aims to promote unity through sport.

A representative for Singh said he “strongly believes in the power of sports to bring people together, inspire young athletes, and foster teamwork and discipline.

” He added that the donation hopes to “support your efforts, encourage participation, help develop your individual skills, and capture more talent in the community.”

The four-team knockout competition features Dartmouth, Henrietta, Good Hope, and hosts Queenstown.

An Under-18 exhibition match will also take place. The winning team will receive $300,000, the runners-up $100,000, and joint third-place finishers $50,000 each.

The tournament will conclude with an after-party featuring Sub Sonics Entertainment and King Addies Vibes Machine.

And though the scoring-happy modern NFL sometimes makes that old saying sound silly, the Super Bowl LIX champion Philadelphia Eagles would like a word.

Sunday night in a city that has hosted a record-tying 11 Super Bowls, the Kansas City Chiefs’ quest for Super Bowl history never got off the ground.

Philadelphia’s swarming defense held Patrick Mahomes and the two-time defending champions to only 23 yards in the first half, led by 24 points at halftime and rolled to a 40-22 victory that kept the Chiefs from becoming the first team to win three straight Super Bowl titles and delivered the second in Eagles history.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, whose cellphone screen saver for the past two years has been a photo of him walking off the Super Bowl LVII field in Arizona surrounded by yellow and red confetti after losing to the Chiefs, was absolutely brilliant.

He was selected Super Bowl MVP, throwing for 221 yards, rushing for 72 and accounting for three touchdowns. He threw only five incompletions with one interception for a passer rating of 119.7.

Philadelphia’s defense forced three turnovers and held Mahomes and the Kansas City offense to 275 yards, building a ridiculous-looking 40-6 lead before the Chiefs threw a couple of late touchdowns.

By that point, it had turned into an all-night party at the end of a weeklong party for Eagles fans in the Big Easy.

And in the end, it was the oft-maligned Hurts and Eagles coach Nick Sirianni holding up the Lombardi Trophy. (ESPN)

Wayne Dover will continue as interim head coach of Guyana’s senior men’s national football team, the Golden Jaguars, for their crucial CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers in March. Guyana faces Guatemala in a home-and-away series, with the winner advancing to the Gold Cup in June 2025.

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) confirmed the appointment while searching for a permanent head coach. Since the vacancy was announced in December, over 200 applications have been received worldwide.

The GFF has committed to a thorough selection process and expects to announce by the end of March.

“The Guyana Football Federation is pleased to announce that Wayne Dover will continue to serve as interim head coach of the senior men’s national team for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup Qualifiers window in March,” the GFF said in a statement.

“As the Golden Jaguars prepare for their Gold Cup qualification, the federation remains focused on ensuring the best possible leadership for the national team both in the immediate campaigns slated for 2025 and the long-term development of Guyana’s football.”

Dover became interim coach after the GFF ended its contract with Jamaal Shabazz.

The Golden Jaguars recently qualified for the Gold Cup Prelims with a 9-4 aggregate win against Barbados.

Shelly Doodnauth of Angoy’s Avenue in New Amsterdam, Berbice, and her five children no longer have to worry about living in a deplorable condition after receiving a new home on Saturday.

The furnished three-bedroom house was built under President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s Men on Mission (MoM) initiative.

The 33 year old part-time worker said she was unable to renovate her previous home and it was unsafe for her family.

She is relieved now that her children will be comfortably accommodated in the new house.

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha presented the woman with the gift and reemphasised the government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable groups through homeownership and other measures.

“Not only in Region Six but in every single region across this country, we are having houses like these being delivered to vulnerable groups,” the minister said.

He commended the efforts of all those who were engaged in the successful completion of the project.

Minister Mustapha also told the residents about the massive transformations ongoing in various sectors, including housing, education and health, which will provide long-term benefits to every Guyanese.

The government wants to develop Guyana’s second Gas-to-Energy project in the ancient county, Berbice, and a deep water port- two massive investments that will require a municipal airport in the region, according to President Dr. Irfaan Ali.

President Ali spoke about the developments planned for Berbice during his recent appearance on the Energy Perspectives Podcast.

Outside of the gas project and deep water port, massive housing developments and commercial ventures like hotels and malls are expected in the region. A new sport stadium is already under construction.

And the Guyanese Head of State firmly believes an airport there will be necessary.

“When you look at the development that you’re going to have at Palmyra, it is very clear in my estimation that somewhere in Berbice, we will have to have a municipal airport development like Ogle somewhere in Berbice,” Dr. Ali said.

This isn’t the first time the President has spoken about this venture. During an outreach activity in April 2022, the President also suggested that the aerodrome at Rose Hall, Canje, will be upgraded to a municipal airport similar to the Ogle airport on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD).

President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced that all of Guyana’s ports of entry and exit will soon with outfitted with “world-class” scanners as the government beefs up security efforts.

“This will happen before the end of the year,” the Guyanese Head of State said during a recent episode of the Energy Perspectives Podcast.

Further, the President noted that these scanners are being procured through a partnership with the United States of America. Once installed, there will be robust monitoring of the ports to quickly spot travelers making false declarations or to determine if there are any security threats.

Dr. Ali emphasised that his government is serious about bolstering security efforts to instill a greater sense of security among people. He also explained that safety and security contribute to an investor’s confidence in an economy, and are important to members of the diaspora.

Outside of this venture, the sum of $34.4 billion has been set aside in the 2025 National Budget to enhance the visibility and responsiveness of the Guyana Police Force (GPF). The amount forms part of the total of $108.7 billion which has been earmarked for the security sector this year.

To build a more effective deployment of smart technology, another $6.2 billion is allocated for the continuation of the Safe Country Initiative, including the procurement of 320 Intelligent Video Surveillance (IVS) sites.

A 51-year-old money changer was on Friday held at gunpoint and robbed of over $500,000 in local and foreign currency, and his gold chain.

Police said the robbery occurred at about 18:20 hrs on Avenue of the Republic and America Street, Georgetown.

The bandits were masked. One of them was armed with a handgun.

In a statement, Police Headquarters said the victim (who they did not named) also works as a vendor.

Prior to the robbery, Police said the victim was packing clothes into his minibus bus when he was confronted by one of the suspect.

The suspect, pulled out a black handgun from his pants and ordered the victim not to move.

“The suspect pushed his hand into the victim’s pants pocket and took out the above-mentioned money (cash), then he snatched off the victim’s gold chain from around his neck,” Police Headquarters said.

The suspect then joined his accomplice who was waiting on a parked motorcycle and they made good their escape south along Avenue of the Republic towards Hadfield Street.

Police said several persons were questioned by detectives as the investigation continues.

Edith Gouveia, a female pork-knocker, is now hospitalised after she was allegedly shot with an arrow and bow during a confrontation with her son-in-law on Friday night.

The incident took place at about 21:00 hrs at a camp owned by Gouveia which is situated at Five Star Landing, North West District.

According to a Police report, the suspect, Romel Thomas called ‘Soldier’ went to Gouveia camp while intoxicated so she chased him out.

This caused him to become angry and returned with an arrow and bow to the camp, wounding her to her back.

Police said the suspect then escaped in a canoe.

Gouveia was taken to the Baramita Hospital and taken transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Her condition is listed as stable. Investigations are ongoing.
